What's on your wall?
Patrick replied to spinlps's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Here is one by Jackson Collins of Venice CA, a poster print that he then painted over. [My first time trying to upload a picture.] Three more by Jackson Collins, hanging in the kitchen. -
More clutch play from the killer B's at the bottom of the Dodger order: Blake and Belliard. May not hit for high average, or be all that reliable, but... And CC was great last night. New grip on one of his pitches, and more rest as the season wound down appear to have helped immensely. And those pinstripes look slimming! So Blake, Belliard, Thome, Sabathia all made excellent contributions last night. Hopefully Cliff Lee will pitch well tomorrow. Meahwhile Tribe contemplating Manny Acta, former mgr of your Washington Nationals, as their next manager.

Exciting playoff baseball in flyover country!!! Solid start from Cliff Lee, but then the bullpens...oy! And in other news, Theo Epstein has granted permission for the Indians to talk to John Farrell about managing the Tribe. Still considered a super longshot. Indians did not request permission to speak to bench coach Brad Mills. Other rumored names are Bobby Valentine and Mike Hargrove. Shapiro wants a new manager in place by the time the World Series ends. We shall see.

Congrats to the Twins for making the playoffs. I only caught part of the extra inning action--a very exciting game played by two teams that definitely wanted it. Only a snob would really think otherwise. Glad to see the Mariners have a successful season, esp Franklin Gutierrez. I was always high on him, but he never quite put it together in Cleveland. Good luck to most of the playoff teams most of the time. I'll be rooting for ex-Indians to perform well, and small market teams. The season from hell in Cleveland is finally over. Thank God. It still disgusts/frustrates me deeply about how the talent has been cleared out. It even disgusts Victor Martinez. Should of contended for the Division this year. Now will not contend next year either. Traded established stars for prospects (gotta do that in small markets, and then hope to get super lucky). Bunch of them (basically everyone they got for Cliff Lee) currently is injured. Yeah, doesn't matter if 2011 is the first season to care about, but... So now your "Playoff Indians" constructed entirely from ex-Indians that made the playoffs this year. Could give real playoff teams a decent run. Doubt a similarly impressive lineup could be constructed from other non-playoff teams. Bullpen may be a bit threadbare, but rotation is solid. Sad that there are this many Indians castoffs. 1. Ben Francisco, cf 2. Mark DeRosa, ss 3. Victor Martinez, c 4. Manny Ramirez, lf 5. Jim Thome, 1b 6. Ryan Ludwick, rf 7. Ronnie Belliard, 2b 8. Casey Blake, 3b Rotation: CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Carl Pavano, Paul Byrd Bullpen: Rafael Betancourt, Guillermo Mota, Matt Herges, Chad Durbin, Juan Rincon, Fernando Cabrera coaching staff: Charlie Manuel, Dave Duncan, John Farrell, Terry Francona, Alfredo Griffin, Glenallen Hill, Rich Dauer The Browns are also abysmally bad. Life is too short. In Cleveland, NBA cannot start soon enough.

what can one say? ...tremendous

What great discourse.

Farrell was mentioned in a chat with the Plain Dealer beat writer (Paul Hoynes), but it was quickly noted that he wouldn't be available next season. No chat about throwing talent at Boston to get him. Given the dearth of starting pitching talent, after the trades of Sabathia and Lee, and the injuries to Westbrook and Carmona, Masterson is staying. Not yet convinced he is a front end starter, but hey, Tribe has plenty of time... Next Indians manager will be a bench coach who hasn't managed at Major League level before. Probably someone I haven't heard of before. GM Mark Shapiro appears to be safe. After a rainout last night, they will play an old-fashioned doubleheader today. Don't think that would have ever happened during the golden era. Presently working on my "Playoff Indians" roster of ex-Indians that will play in the post-season this year (or be available). Just need to learn who the last few playoff teams will be. I'm confident that my assemblage of talent could take any similarly constructed "Playoff" team. I fear the Dodgers may be doomed in that they look to have 5 ex-Indians on their roster.

Eric Wedge and staff to be canned at 1:30pm today, though they will still manage/coach the rest of the season. Wedge was the Cleveland manager for 7 seasons (5th longest tenure among current mgrs behind Cox, LaRussa, Scioscia, and Gardenhire). In seven seasons, Tribe won the Division once and finished second just once.

The evil empire is indeed evil, but just keep complaining man. At least your team is right there in the mix in late September. Frustrations along the course of the season (all teams have them), but at least there are no fire sales, no white flags for 2009 (or 2010) in Beantown. Given that it was Byrd vs. Pettitte, game was a lot closer that one would expect. Did VMart just get the day off for some other reason or does he not catch Byrd? In Cleveland, Shoppach caught Byrd instead of VMart. Wonder if there are some longterm issues there. Will the Varitek era be over in the next few weeks? For the Tribe, they end an 11 game losing streak (try that on for size) by getting to play the Orioles, whose losing streak now stands at 10. Dreams that David Huff, Asdrubal Cabrera, and other young guys will play well next year. Smiles everybody!! NBA season can't get to Cleveland soon enough [even with the 24/7 "where will LeBron be next year?" nonsense spewing from NY/NJ and elsewhere].

I agree. The same thing happened to Letterman. I don't watch any of those guys these days.

as you note, totally subjective, but you gotta have Soultrane

Kerry Wood was available.

Daedalus is selling most of the Monterey JF titles for $6.98. Artists include Davis, Monk, MJF 50th Anniversary Ensemble (Green, Moody et al), Vaughan, Horn, Tjader, Gillespie, Witherspoon. Among those not included in the sale are two that I still seek: Blakey and the Monterey Jazz Quartet (Dave Holland).

charming indeed. thanks for the tip. Did you make your download goal?

Purchasing brand new sets helps Mosaic. It was Mosaic's business strategy to wholesale the Selects to various retailers. No one should cry if those non-Mosaic sellers actually sell the product (...that they paid Mosaic for). In fact, that's what the strategy is designed to accomplish. Would you insist that retailers have to charge a price greater than or equal to the Mosaic price, so that everyone then buys from Mosaic (first)? Should we all purchase BN titles at high prices from BN.com? They are not doing too well right now (and they have a strategy similar to Mosaic's of wholesaling their product to various retailers). Or maybe we should just make charitable contributions to for-profit jazz labels because there isn't much profit right now. This recent run is not related to the economy. It was a blunder at a manufacturing plant. Current demand exceeds current supply and prices adjust. Maybe Mosaic (or True Blue) should raise their prices on the limited availability items. Of course, if buyers today knew what was going to happen, more sales would have been made earlier (at Mosaic and other sellers). I've purchased a number of Selects from Mosaic and from other retailers. If Mosaic is going to supply product to sellers that then offer them to me at lower prices, that's where I'll transact. Mosaic could change its strategy to not use retailers (like they've done for decades on the boxes), or charge higher wholesale prices. I'm a fan of their products (...though likely not quite as rabid as many others) and hope that they can weather the economy and manufacturing problem. I will continue to purchase interesting Mosaic products which will benefit Mosaic (as long as they remain with us).

I got a shipping confirmation from Dusty Groove for the Curtis Amy Select, along with another handful of $4.99 Jazz in Paris titles, and the Coltrane Interplay box. Looks like I got one of their last copies of CA in stock. So I await delivery of Dexter from an eBay seller and Curtis Amy from DG.

Got my Mosaic order (lacking a backordered set) a day or two prior to the mayhem. Had been keeping my eye on a cheap used copy of the Dexter Gordon Select on eBay. Read this thread, then checked ebay. That used copy was gone, but I immediately purchased a new one from another ebay seller (alibris music) for $47.57 delivered. Usually I shop around a bit, but pulled the trigger quickly on this one. Nothing else looked essential that I did not already own. May regret that later, but hey, there is so much good music out there (...and not so much time to enjoy it).

This is good news, especially given that their sets, especially the large ones, make excellent holiday gifts. I hope the scheduled return of these items does not slip past the holidays.

...because the Indians are a AA team... David Huff has a chance to be the only Indian starter with double digit wins on the season. When was the last time your team featured no 10 game winners?

Paint the fence in the backyard. Clean up. Celebrate the wedding anniversary with a low key dinner at Ray's The Steaks. Perhaps look at some photos from 17 years ago, but definitely not the amateur VHS.

Yikes. I placed the order last night, and this morning the Armstrong and Jones shipped. It appears that I got charged for all 3 (including Jazz Crusaders). My invoice says that "backordered items usually ship in 1-2 weeks" Looks like I'll be calling them tomorrow, once I confirm that I'm currently loaning them $104 (indefinitely?). Want to support the operation, but they need to get their act together on the backordered items. Okay. Turns out they only charged me $179 for Armstrong and Jones, not the $281 that appears on the email shipping notification. As I calculate it, I'm loaning them only $2 (of shipping differential) while we wait on the Jazz Crusaders. I did not call Mosaic.

I went ahead and placed a Mosaic order for the Armstrong, Jazz Crusaders, and Carmell Jones offerings. Crusaders still listed as back order. Should I anticipate getting charged for this before delivery? Did others ever get a straight story about the backorders?

Likening Wakefield to Paul Byrd... hmmm....an interesting hypothesis. ...Wonder if anyone else has ever made such a comparison Wake certainly has accomplished much more over his long career, but it is high variance for him, like Byrd. ...Just hope neither become your regular third starter.
