  1. Managed to find some things: ECMs (Lloyd, Rabo de Nube; Wasilewski, January; Winstone, Somewhere Called Home), and some other titles I did not expect to see at Borders: Gress, The Irrational Numbers; Solal, Longitude; Tolliver, Impact. I was totally unaware of the enja 24bit master editions...so it's been a few years. Any others especially worth picking up?
  2. Except those who teach in universities and colleges in this country. Depends on the field. Quite a few academics are extremely well-paid. Guy That's correct. Fields with non-academic alternatives that are fairly lucrative (like b-school, law, economics) get paid a bit more to stay in the academy than profs in less lucrative fields (fill your favorites in here).
  3. Congrats on the success with Groovadelphia!!! Any choice gigs lined up along the mid-Atlantic coast?? Say in DC, maybe for an inaugural?
  4. Need to fit in somewhere inventing baseball and writing the Constitution--sounds right.
  5. have no fear, Youk (as well as the broadcast) is here!
  6. Happy Birthday HG. Hope the fall weather in Cleveland is decent. After the Browns win against NYG maybe the locals can wait a bit for LeBron to get back to work stateside.......nah, get back to work LeBron!! :bwallace2:
  7. and in other news, congrats to the Phils!!! Is Pat Gillick a genius again? Nice for Charlie Manuel after his mother died during this series.
  8. Nice start by Garza. With recent efforts by Beckett and Lester, tough to be confident in Beantown. Comes down to high variance Wakefield (tremendously good or tremendously not good). Odd to hear Skip Caray try to use "despite" and "in spite of" as opposites. I always thought they meant the same thing. ...Or maybe not so odd.
  9. Jackson Pollack Sydney Pollack Sid Sydney
  10. I agree if Farrell got tossed before running out there. My understanding based on that crack TBS crew was that he got tossed after running out. But then I was jetlagged (thanks again American ) and not rooting for either team, so your recollection is better than mine. There definitely were a few bad calls late in the game that went the Rays' way. I didn't see anything before the end of the 9th so I can't judge the game overall. Farrell and friends have every right to be upset and to chirp (and possibly get tossed), but I think you cross the line when you run out onto the field with no other intention but to get into the umpires face about balls and strikes. If Farrell was already gone, fine. Get your money's worth. Why was Francona out there, to restrain Farrell?? Wheeler did recover nicely after giftwrapping the tying run to the Sox. Over in the NL, is the Jamie Moyer Era now over, or are there a few more encores left?
  11. Interesting game late into the night. I had plans to enjoy the game at home on the east coast after a 10 day trip in California. A nasty airline delay (mechanical problems that took 5 hours to figure out were there and unfixable) ruined my chances to watch the game. Or so I thought. Spent two hours at DFW waiting for a connecting flight (6-8pm central) and found not a single television on the C concourse watching playoff baseball. Everyone there is into their college football bigtime--and not just Texas/Oklahoma. Finally when walking to the gate to board, saw that it was already 2-0 in the middle of the first and thought (1) if Beckett is good tonight, it's over, and (2) the game will be over by the time I get to DC from DFW. Fast forward 3 hrs and 15 minutes. On the drive home the all news channel reports that its tied in the ninth inning. Got home at midnight instead of the scheduled 5pm. So despite a brutal decision-making process by an American Airlines captain (obviously agree with the decision to cancel, just not the process), got to enjoy the last couple of innings. What is the deal with the "can't argue strikes" rule? Can you argue them one pitch later? To me, Francona and Farrell should have both been tossed, immediately. Really unsportsmanlike to go out there and whine, even if it's a pitch later. Chirp from the dugout (and get tossed) if you must. I thought there was a rule against this, or does it not apply to playoff Red Sox games? As a fan of neither the Rays nor the BSox, I could symphasize with the uneasiness of seeing Price come in for the Rays, and then to see double-barrelled action of Byrd and Timlin warming up for the Sox. With that, I was confident that the game would not go much longer. And Timlin lived up to his recent reputation. Ultimately, I hope for anything else besides Red Sox/Dodgers just to avoid all of the nonsense surrounding Manny's return. Let that happen when he's wearing a Yankee uniform in some overhyped regular season game next year.
  12. Hoping for another one of those 40% off deals, and maybe, just maybe, some of the ECM Touchstones will be in stock, putting them in that <$8 range...
  13. congrats to the Rays, ...and the CUBS!! Tribe back to .500 for first time in a very long time (22-22 on May 18). With 4 left against BOS and 3 against CWS (after today's finale against roid rage Sheffield and DET), unlikely they will finish there. ...But at least Cliff Lee and Scott Lewis go twice more. NYY home opener next year may feature Cliff Lee v. CC Sabathia, though I think CC stays in the NL.
  14. Bah. 2005 White Sox 2003 Marlins 2002 Angels 2001 D-backs The Yankees have had lots of playoff experience in this century and no titles to show for it. I'll take the better team of the year, you can have the experience. I only wish the 1995 Indians would have been on your list. But with Red Sox and White Sox off the WS drought list, and hopefully the Cubs this year, perhaps it will be Tribe Time soon. Until then, I can get excited about sweeping the Twins at home after losing 3 of 4 to KC. .500 or bust!!!
  15. Another strong outing for Tribe rookie Scott Lewis. After 8 shutout innings against Baltimore in his debut last week, 6 shutout innings against the Twins tonight (3H, 5K 2BB). And Kelly Shoppach has emerged as the best player in the Coco Crisp/Andy Marte trade (.272 ave, 21 HR). ...now back to games that matter
  16. Happy Birthday Dan! ...baseball season is far from over...
  17. 69 for Fairfax, Virginia (one of those car-dependent 'burbs). I live within walking distance of Metro (public transit), but Northern Virginia, outside Arlington and Alexandria, doesn't have much in the way of sidewalks, so I think the 69 is a bit overstated.
  18. Yeah that soft tosser Paul Byrd sure ain't no Tim Wakefield!
  19. That was an exciting end to the second set. Each player erasing a triple break point situation. Serena could beat me up, ...easily.
  20. Perhaps an illustration of the high variability of performance by knuckleballers?
  21. Gotta weigh in on Vaughan v. Belle. Obviously I'm biased, and I've argued this before, but I don't think it's even close. 50 HR/52 doubles for Belle--don't think it matters that much who's in the lineup. And those guys had something to prove all season, so there was no coasting. An extremely confident bunch yes, but back in '95 the Tribe was only 47 years into their still current dry spell. A typical Tribe lineup back then was 1. Lofton cf .310, 2. Vizquel ss .266, 3. Baerga 2b .314, 4. Belle lf .317, 5. Murray dh .323, 6. Thome 3b .314, 7. Ramirez rf .308, 8. Sorrento 1b .235, 9. Alomar c .300. Alomar was the All-Star catcher Sandy Jr, not the All-Star 2b. That year, you could make a decent argument that Baerga was a more valuable second baseman than R Alomar (based obviously entirely on his bat). Robbie's time in Cleveland came later--in one of his seasons with the Tribe one could reasonably argue that he and Manny "split MVP votes" so that neither won despite having monster seasons. And I remember Manny getting picked off of first in the World Series against the Braves...
  22. Cliff Lee!!!!! Complete game shutout against Chisox, retiring 21 in a row at one point. Now 20-2 with a league leading 2.32 ERA, and it's only September 1. First 20 game winner for the Tribe since Gaylord Perry in '74 (Sabathia and Carmona each got to 19 last year). He better be the AL Cy Young winner--I don't care how many saves K-Rod records this year. One of the few bright spots during the season from hell in Cleveland (...recently capped off a 10 game winning streak by getting swept at home by the Mariners...).
