  2. 12 CDs of Sidney Bechet put out by Masters of Jazz in the 1990s. Now sadly out of print. Many of the tracks were transferred by John R.T. Davies. Some of these were acquired new; some were acquired used. Both CDs and inserts are in excellent condition, except for the following: The tray card for volume 4 has a slight circular impression of the back tray. A couple of pages of the front booklet for volume 7 *might* have had a slight exposure to moisture. $124 for these 12 CDs including insured shipping within the US. SOLD!!
  3. This band is a sextet consisting of mostly Chicago avant garde musicians and led by the Dutch alto sax player Jorrit Dijkstra. I just saw them at the Edgefest in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They were just amazingly good, so much more interesting and lively than other bands I saw at the Fest, and it was too bad that they played so late so that many people seemed to leave before they took the stage. I had seen the band in Bloomington, Indiana a couple of years ago, and I thought that they played much better this time. Not that they were less than thrilling a couple of years ago. If you get a chance, check them out. Here is their N. American schedule this year. The Flatlands Collective October 17: Edgefest, Ann Arbor MI October 18: Heaven Gallery, Chicago IL December 3: Casa del Popolo, Montreal December 4: Lily Pad, Cambridge MA December 5: Longy School of Music, Cambridge MA, masterclass December 5: Firehouse 12, New Haven CT December 6: Issue Project Room, Brooklyn, NY December 7: Baltimore or Philadelphia
  4. John Lewis is perhaps my favorite jazz pianist, and I was wondering how his recordings of Bach preludes and fugues are. Has anyone listened to them? I could not find any reviews in the usual classical review books.
  5. Yes, I think so. I think you will like him. I think Ratliff once described McHenry's playing as what Stan Getz would have sounded like if he had grown up with Ornette Coleman. I thought that was quite spot-on.
  6. I've always wondered what McHenry would sound like in this setting -- with Motian and Frisell, that is. I think Lovano is a very fine player, but he gushes in some predictable ways after a while, and then one longs for some different emotional range. McHenry seems to me a much more unpredictable and elegant player. I was hoping that the NPR concert would be with McHenry, but alas it is from the Wednesday show when Lovano was back. I am a big fan of McHenry, and my faves are two he co-led: "Live at Smalls" (FSNT) in a quartet with Ethan Iverson. "Rediscovery" (Sunnyside) in a quartet with John McNeil These are very fine recordings, and I hope many more will come in the near future.
  7. About how much of the Braxton set would be quartet recordings, does anyone know? Those are what I am most excited about. Very few things in jazz as exciting as Holland and Altschul in the early 1970s.
  8. Hello. I'm interested in the following: Stanley Turrentine and the 3 Sounds – Blue Hour, Volume 2 (TOCJ-66082, 2000 “Lost Sessions” series, stereo)
  9. I'd appreciate any reactions. This set seems like it could be really really good, or really really boring.
  10. Really an excellent CD. Never a dull moment. Avant garde and straight-ahead at once. At a show in Brooklyn a year or so ago, McNeil introduced McHenry as the best tenor sax player in NYC. I'm beginning to believe him.
  11. Up with additions.

  13. John Lindberg just let me know that he has a couple of copies of this very rare oop LP. If you have been interested in acquiring this, I'd grab it now. John can be reached at: www.johnlindberg.com/LindyEditions
  14. I once sent an e-mail to Mosaic suggesting Vanguard & Storyville sessions. MC wrote back saying that these are currently owned by people who are not very keen on working with Mosaic. Any more Mulligan would be great. The sextet sessions with Brookmeyer & Zoot Sims especially. Too bad Norman Granz did not own Verve longer to record more Mulligan. It would have been great to have Mulligan record with Jack Teagarden or Pee Wee Russell for example.

  19. This is great!! I was hoping that they would do the whole motherload -- Argo, Cadet, and Impulse! sessions. But this is good enough for me. I'm happy.
  20. I would be interested in what others think of the music on this set in comparison to Berry's Commodore sides. I wasn't going to get this set since it has so many big band dates and I tend to not enjoy those. But I was just listening to my single CD collection of Hawkins & Berry Commodore sessions and really enjoyed Berry's sound. Do others also think that the sessions on Mosaic are different from, and inferior to, the Commodore sides? Thanks in advance for the response.

  22. "Joyous" or "joyful". Constant misuse of the phrase "begs the question".
  23. For whatever reason the Don Byas is one of the most difficult albums in the Vogue Masters reissue program to locate. There are several available on Amazon if you wish to pay a premium ... the lowest price I have seen recently is $38.00. Even on the European Amazon sites this album sells for a premium price .. Yes, I noticed that it is available on Amazon. But I was hoping to locate it for a more reasonable price. Thanks. I hope that the Vogues get re-issued at some point. They came and went before I became interested in most of the titles.

Thanks, TL. I do not (yet) have a turntable, so I will have to wait before investing in the Sasson LPs. Thanks again.
