Very happy to oblige!!

Yes, I know. I spent a small fortune acquiring the Fremeaux Django sets a couple of years ago. I like them a lot, but I noticed that some of the sessions had sounds that left something to be desired. That is why I was curious about the JIP Django CDs. Thanks again for such helpful posts.

I guess I am the last person to get up to speed on what is going on. So the Board lives, right? (Couldn't read all of the posts.) I'm afraid that I had not donated in the past, partly because I had no idea how much this operation costs; just sent in my first, and will do so regularly in the future. Hope things keep going. I would have sorely missed the good-natured posts of people like Jazzbo, Brownie, and Ghost, just to name a few.

Thanks, Brownie. I guess I will just stick with my Fremeaux CDs on Django. I was thinking of getting these JIP CDs if they were vastly superior.

Is anyone in a position to compare the sound quality of the Django Reinhardt CDs in this series with that of the Fremeaux CDs?
-
I am looking for the following 2 items with the CDs and packaging in excellent condition. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. I also have many CDs (including many new ones added this past week) for trade. Thanks. Don Byas, "Featuring Mary Lou Williams Trio & Beryl Booker Trio" (Vogue) Lee Konitz, "Motion" (Verve Elite) 3-CD set

Thanks, Brownie. Couldn't you convince someone in the French jazz music business to re-issue all of Sasson's recordings? It's certainly a shame that the music business is in such shambles.

There is a guitarist named "Jean-Pierre Sasson" who plays on several of the Jazz in Paris CDs. Mostly he plays in very inconspicuous ways. But recently I checked out some tracks on Lucky Thompson's "Americans Swinging in Paris" CD. These are tracks on which Sasson, not Thompson, was the leader. Wow! His playing is fascinating. Kind of like the stripped-down version of Django Reinhardt on electric guitar, but much more at ease on electric than Reinhardt's playing on electric guitars in some of his last recordings. As far as I can find out, Sasson did not make many recordings on his own -- some EPs on the label Ducret Thomson that probably will never be re-issued. How I wish I could listen to some of these recordings.

Man, they're really recycling that series. Gotta update my list. Sorry if this was discussed before. But are there things in these box sets that are not contained in the individual CDs of the Jazz in Paris series? If so, how much? I'm just beginning to try out some of these CDs, and finding them very nice indeed.

I recently picked up this CD from a used store. It's a wonderful session of some of the most lovable songs. The band includes Ruby Braff, Lucky Thompson, Denzil Best, and Milt Hinton. Lucky Thompson's brief but amazing solo in "A Hundred Years from Today" is alone worth the $9 I paid for the CD. I think this reissue came out very recently and should be available readily.

Thanks, everyone. I am thinking of trying them again.

I was wondering whether anyone has ordered from Tower.com lately. I am wondering whether they are still listing items as available when in fact they do not have them in stock, and taking a long time to fulfill orders (or not fulfilling them at all) while charging the credit cards from the moment the orders are placed.
-
Does anyone know whether this re-issue has improved sound? As I already have "All Night Long", I am wondering whether I should just get "All Day Long" or the 2-fer. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I'd like such a CD issue too. I believe that these are Vic Dickenson-led sessions. The other issue I'd like very much would be the complete Circle recordings by Corea and the company.

I myself think one cannot go wrong with the recent Salonen on DG. Boulez sounds tame and safe in comparison.

Alex Ross, The Rest is Noise
Bol replied to Bol's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I agree with you that Whitehead overdoes the "hip" writing now and then. But on the whole, he seems to be quite incisive about the music he likes -- more so than, say, people like Giddins and the guy who wrote that really boring book on the West Coast Jazz whose name I forget. I've used Whitehead's book to explore the Dutch music, and while I did not agree with him all the time, I built up a lot of trust in his judgments. And I do not mind that he is not comprehensive. I think these writers have the right to just cover what they like best. Nothing more boring than writers who try to be comprehensive for the sake of being comprehensive. And his reviews for Fresh Air are fun and to-the-point. -

Thanks for that. I for one enjoy Ross's writings. He's quite informal in the best way -- kinda like Kevin Whitehead. And I like the low cringe quotient in his writings compared to other cultural critics. -
His name is "Damion Reid". I too enjoyed his playing a lot and made the point of telling him so afterwards and learning his name. He seemed like a very nice guy too. He is on the Robert Glasper trio CDs. I plan to check those out soon. As for the Trio, I'd be curious about what others say about them. I must confess that I didn't "get" it, and was thoroughly bored. The best moments for me were when the three played together without the electronic stuff in the background. I found the electronic stuff gratuitous and distracting, and "dated" the way that some 1970s electronic stuff sound -- e.g. on Ornette Coleman's "Science Fiction" recording. And large parts of the piece seemed rather aimless and self-indulgent. But I'm not too experienced with this kind of music, and I'd be curious to find out what I was supposed to be listening for.

Thanks, Nate. I'm pursuing a couple of leads. I may bother you again if they turn cold. Thanks again. -

I've tried Incus and Verge. Neither has it. And Karen Brookman at Incus told me that she does not know whether she will get more of this in any near future. I'm assuming that it is out of print. -

Thank you for this info. But I am hoping that I can acquire this somewhat cheaper. With the bad exchange rate, international shipping, and the fact that this seller does not exclude VAT, purchasing this CD from this seller would run to something like $40. -
Does anyone know of a good system for that price? I am trying to get this info. for my girlfriend who wants to buy 2 pairs (or 2 pairs and subwoofer-type gizmos) for her home and office.
