  1. E-mail sent regarding Konitz Half Note set.
  2. Florestan Trio on Hyperion.
  3. The W&W website lists a new live recording by Motian's Trio 2000 band. This looks very good. Appearances by Kikuchi and Osby. http://www.winterandwinter.com/
  4. Well, I don't know anything about the TV show, but that is probably b/c I did not grow up in this country. In any case, I will give this a more sustained try. Thanks for the advice.
  5. Fortunately, the CD plays perfectly fine. But I am not sure about the music. It's a bit . . . sappy. Given what you all say about it, I will definitely give it more of a try. If my misgivings about it continue, you will see this listed on a FT/FS list.

  7. I just picked up a very scratched up copy at a used CD store. I had never seen a copy of this before. I hope it plays fine. Am I right in thinking that this is rather hard to find?
  8. TOCJ 66387 Charlap,Bill(p)/Autumn in New York 2500 I wonder if this is different from Charlap's "Live at the Village Vanguard" that has just been released. I hope it is. I'm always ready for more Charlap -- esp. in a trio setting.
  9. One ECM title and a couple of DG classical titles. All in print. Nothing unusual.
  10. Well, at the very least, everything will ALWAYS be "in stock", right? Yes, I placed an order only to experience the usual shenanigans that I experienced with Caiman. All 3 CDs I ordered were originally marked as "In stock". After about 10 days, I sent a couple of e-mails but received no reply. It took a long wait (about 20 minutes) on the telephone to finally speak with someone and to cancel the order. As soon as I cancelled, they sent out 2 of the 3 CDs I originally ordered. I won't order from them again. This is sadder than Tower just disappearing altogether.

  12. Edward, Yes. I did check with Mosaic a couple of days ago, and placed an order for the booklet yesterday. They do have those booklets, and they are for $20 each. Listened to the whole set, and I really think this an excellent set.
  13. Just got this set from a seller on eBay. The set was cheapter than one might expect because it did not have the booklet. I'm almost done with the 2nd disc, and the music is really superb. I like this better than the Condon Mob set which I like very much. I like the stretched-out, languid, but still passionate playing on many of these tracks.

  16. Perhaps Chuck and I are looking for different qualities in these recordings. What I like and admire in Brendel's recordings is that more than any other pianists I know he seems to convey in his performances the overall architecture of the pieces he is playing. This is most apparent in some of the Romantic pieces -- esp. Liszt. Whereas so many others tend to just emote, Brendel seems to build. Occasionally, I like sturm und drang too. Then I may listen to Annie Fischer. But I like Brendel most of all. By the way, the Beethoven sonatas by Brendel's student Paul Lewis, which are coming out these days, are also very good. They are more contemplative than Brendel's. But Lewis has the same concern for architecture that I like.
  17. I really like Brendel. (I hope I do not get abused for that.) I also recommend highly Rudolf Serkin's recordings with Abbado on DG. Not complete, but most of the late concertos.
  18. So far, this seems like a very nice recording. Nothing earth-shattering, but very good. Paul Motian's sound is really addictive. I like his drumming more and more every day. I am not crazy about his EBB. But as for the small group recordings he has done recently as a leader or a sideman, the ones with Enrico Pieranunzi are the only ones I found disappointing. Looking forward to his new trio recording with Lovano and Frisell in April.

  21. I do not have the details. What's in the e-mail is what I know. I had been assuming that it would be a big box set of all of his Argo material.
  22. Just got this e-mail message from Mosaic: "The Cohn-Newman-Green sessions will be an April select. Ahmad Jamal is going throught the unissued Argo material very soon and we hope to have a set next year." The first is Al Cohn-Joe Newman-Freddie Green RCA sessions. I've been pestering them about these sets for the last 3 years. You guys should thank me. I've been a bit underwhelmed by their recent releases. These are gonna be great!!

  24. Thanks, everyone. I'll have to get this. But I imagine it will cost me a pretty penny. By the way Sudhalter's notes to the Mob set is just superb. He really is the best writer on jazz I've read. Who wrote the notes for the Condon set?
  25. I recently acquired the Condon Mob set, and Pee Wee Russell's "We're in the Money" CD, and am enjoying these tremendously. I'm wondering how much the OOP Eddie Condon CBS Mosaic set is like the Condon Mob set. Are they pretty much the same kind of music? Or are there some noticeable differences? Thanks in advance. Am wondering whether I should make an extra effort to acquire the Condon CBS set.
