15% off $25 or more online: T52FW8Y I know the company is sinking, but might as well give them more revenue. They still seem capable of filling orders very efficiently.

I heartily recommend Edmond Hall's quartet/sextet recording. Ellis Larkins is especially good, as is the leader. I usually don't like Medlies, but this CD has a fantastic medley of Elllington tunes. I've been listening mostly to bop and avant stuff, but this CD is tempting me to take advantage of the Mosaic 10% off sale and get the Condon Mob set. Can anyone who has both the Condon Mob set and this Hall CD let me know how similar the music is in terms of both style and quality? Thanks in advance.
-
I just bought on eBay a TOCJ copy of this Corea recording for a very reasonable price. Unfortunately, contrary to the info on the eBay item page, this version has only the original 5 tracks. I'm wondering whether the 8 extra tracks included in the recent American version are really worth my spending more money to acquire. Thanks in advance for any opinions.
-
What gives me pause about this recording is Mark Turner. About a year ago, I really liked him and bought a couple of his CDs as well as a couple of Reid Anderson CDs with Turner. And then a few weeks later, I became very sick of him, and I found him very boring. (I had a similar experience with Brad Mehldau.) His playing seems to just meander without having "a point", and his compositions are the same. Another recording with Iverson that people may like is his quartet recording with Bill McHenry on Fresh Sound New Talent called "Live at Small's". It is a very nice standards album with a really passionate version of "The Look of Love". Yes, Dusty Springfield's song.
-
If BMG owns Arista recordings, then Mosaic should have an easier time now than before the Sony-BMG merger in turning these sessions into box set. Fingers crossed.
-
Of the modern, straight-ahead trumpeters, I think Enrico Rava is difficult to beat. There are a couple of quartet recordings on CamJazz, a title on Venus called "Renaissance", and perhaps my favorite a quartet date called "Quatre" on an Italian label I cannot remember right now -- it has D'Andrea on piano, Vitous on bass, and Humair on drums. Very very nice.
-
Does anyone know of any reason that the early 1970's Anthony Braxton recordings -- I have in mind the Circle recordings on Blue Note, and the quartet recordings on Arista with Wheeler, Holland, & Altschul -- have not been available on CD? I would have thought that these would have appeared at least in Japan by now. Very strange and unfortunate.
-
Yes, I did not know about this until a couple of weeks ago. That's when I got Haynes's "Fountain of Youth", and I liked it so much that I did some web searches. In the new CD, there is also a blurb about an upcoming box set that Dreyfus seems to be preparing. Very good news.
-
I am listening to the new Roy Haynes recording. He is just soooo good!! As far as I know, his sidemen are complete unknowns, and they just sound great with him. He seems to make everyone around him sound fabulous. I hope Haynes makes many many more records. I find that I look forward to his recordings with more anticipation than to almost anyone else's.
-
I like the new CD too, but I wish there would be a Von Freeman recording with a somewhat different and more modern rhythm section. So far, "The Improvisor" is the only one released by Premonition that has a different "feel". Why not Vonski with Jason Moran, Mark Helias, and Jack DeJohnette? Why not Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, and Roy Haynes? Why not Joe Morris, William Parker, and Susie Ibarra? Why not Enrico Rava, Bill Frisell, and Paul Motian? Why not Misha Mengelberg, Ernst Glerum, and Han Bennink? Oh boy....
-
I gave them a call, and was told that the situation is temporary. I guess they are trying to iron things out with their distributors.
-
Well, I hope it is only temporary. They can't possibly do business without settling such a dispute.
-
It seems now that Tower.com is not selling any items that they do not currently have in stock. Either there is a terrible computer glitch or they seem to be going out of business.

This may be old news to a lot of you, but does Wayne Shorter have some obsession with hands? His two recent Verve quartet CDs are full of pictures of his hands. Weird. He and George Lucas should get together.
-
I know this is an extremely long shot. But would anyone have a nice copy that he or she is willing to part with?
-
Has anyone heard (or even seen) this CD? Lovano's website lists it. If you have heard it, how is it? Is it worth spending a lot of energy and time (and probably money) searching out for it? I used to not "get" Lovano. But then recently, I really got into Paul Motian's trio/quartet recordings with Lovano and Frisell. Now, I find Lovano quite compelling. Really amazingly consistent and good through many recordings. I used to like better Tony Malaby, who at times sounds a lot like Lovano. But I'm finding that Malaby has some set licks that appear much too often.
-
Hmmm... I just saw the Evans set at Borders today, and the outer box says "20-bit K2". Is that a misprint? Or did Tarantino do a new remaster using the same technology? By the way, Lon, who is that fetching woman whose picture you put up?
-
I got this set a couple of weeks ago, and I've listened to it through only once. So far, I like it a lot. Dorner and Mahall form a very nice and exciting front line. And I find that Schlippenbach is quite interesting. On his avant garde dates, he has a tendency to pounce a bit much for my taste. But not on these recordings. I also recommend Schlippenbach's wife Aki Takase's recordings: one with David Murray playing Monk tunes, and one with Rudi Mahall playing Dolphy tunes. A lot of fun, those two discs. If you want to buy the Schlippenbach set, I think Squidco has the best price, and free shipping.
-
Thanks so much for a very helpful answer. I wish it was a straight re-issue of the 20-bit K2, as I am a big fan of that format.
-
Am I right in thinking that this is a straight re-issue of the Japanese 20-bit K2 release? Thanks in advance for your response.

I'm wondering how this recording is. AMG gives it a good review but the review is done by a writer I've come to find less than reliable. Anyone own this? Is the singing OK, or is it annoying? Any comments would be appreciated.
