Vocal jazz is usually not my thing, but Peggy Lee has been an exception. I really like the tracks that she sings on in the Benny Goodman small group sessions. So, I've been thinking about getting the Lee-Christy set. Now, I've just read that Derek Bailey really liked Dave Barbour, and that Bailey was sorry that Barbour left the music scene and stopped playing altogether when he and Lee became a wild success. So, I was wondering, how prominent is Barbour's guitar in this Mosaic set? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I am interested in your opinions on these -- especially Stenson's latest with Paul Motian. I recently got one of Charles Lloyd's ECM CDs and found myself liking Stenson's piano playing much more than Lloyd's sax work. And I also read with interest a recent profile of Stenson in JazzTimes. But the sound clips of Stenson's CDs lead me to think that his CDs are a bit too tepid and uniform. Much of them seem to be slow ballads very slowly played in the over-indulgent style that ECM is famous for. Am I right?

I had good luck finding a copy of Sonny Simmons, "Ancient Ritual" through this board last week, so I thought I should try this again. I am looking for clean, excellent (non-promo, non-cutout) copies of: Marilyn Crispell, "Kitchen Concerts" (Leo) Enrico Rava & Ran Blake, "Duo en Noir" (Between the Lines) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am trying to get some CDs released by the French label Label Bleu. Does anyone know a good way to do this in the US? Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

The reviews on AMG are rather tepid. And the two reviews on Amazon are rather poor. Could people comment on the music and the sound quality of these recordings? Thanks in advance.

Is this set worth getting? I saw it for $20 at a used CD store yesterday.

Here is what I got back from MC when I wrote to Mosaic to recommend a set of early Paul Bley sessions (including the live sets with Coleman): I used to work with Paul in the late '60s getting him bookings and recordings. His stuff is all over the place, might be hard to pull together. As for the stuff with Ornette, business between them got very ugly and I doubt any of that stuff will be coming out again, at least legitimately. MC

Were the Hillcrest tracks ever available on CDs?

Is it safe to assume that the 20-bit K2 series is now dead? What a crying shame!

Predictions on a vintage 2006 Mosaic year?
Bol replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
MC told me in October that there will be a Select of Al Cohn-Joe Wilder-Freddie Green RCA sessions in 2006. That should be very good. -
Thank you very much for all you replies. I am in Britan for 3 months, and should explore the stores by and by.

I will be in London and surrounding areas early in the new year, and I may also go to Amsterdam. Could people recommend good used and new jazz CD stores in those 2 cities? For Amsterdam, I am particularly eager to pick up some hard-to-find Dutch jazz recordings. Many thanks in advance.

I was listening last night to John Lindberg's "Tree Frog Tonality", which also has Leo Smith on it, and I find that record so much more interesting than the "Golden Quartet". Lindberg's compositions seem to be much better knit, and more surprising than Smith's.

I spent a small fortune acquring these, and I am not sure I am crazy about them. The music is impressive (esp. Carter), but I am not sure if I love it. So, am wondering whether any of you'd be interested in a trade. These 2 CDs come in separate jewel cases (not digipack), and they have minor scuffs that do not affect play. Inserts and jewel cases in excellent condition. Here are some I am interested in acquring: Eric Boeren, “Cross Breeding” (BIMhuis) Eric Boeren, “Joy of a Toy” (BVHaast) Anthony Braxton, “Composition 98” (Hat Art 6062) Anthony Braxton, “Prag” (Sound Aspects) Anthony Braxton, “Seven Compositions” (Hat Art 6025) Anthony Braxton, “Quartet (Willisau) 1991” (Hat Art 6100) Anthony Braxton, “Quartet (Santa Cruz) 1993” (Hat Art 6190) Gerry Hemingway, “Marmalade King” (Hat Art 6164) Guus Janssen, “Pok” (Geestgronden) Steve Lacy & Maarten Altena, “High, Low & Order” (Hat Art 6069) John Lindberg, “East Side Suite” (Sound Aspects) Mal Waldron & Steve Lacy, “The Peak: Live at Dreher, Paris”, vol. 2 (Hat Art 6186)

I've been listening to this CD, and I am afraid that it leaves me a bit cold. The lineup (Smith, Anthony Davis, Malachi Favors, Jack DeJohnette) is so good, and the CD has received very good reviews. But the music seems uninteresting. Perhaps it grows on you after a while?

I've been really enjoying Von Freeman's recent recordings on Premonition. I'm wondering how the somewhat older SteepleChase recordings are. They are: Lester Leaps in Never Let Me Go Dedicated to You Anyone familiar with these? How are they? Is it true that electric piano is played on these recordings, as I've read somewhere? Thanks in advance.
