  2. I agree that many vocal tracks are hokey. And like many people, I'm not that into older music. But oh those trumpet solos!! Bunny is special. Too bad he did not record much in small groups.
  3. I assume they were unopened, right? No, though they were all pretty spanking new. They assured me that they can resell the stuff. I would have otherwise felt a bit guilty despite their guarantee. The return did entail my spending a bit of money on shipping both ways. But now I have 3 sets I really like. I hope I am not starting some mass shipping back campaign.
  4. I am intrigued (and even impressed), but not quite won over, by these 3 things that include Tony Malaby. So, if you like him, and have some things to offer in trade, please let me know. Kevin Norton's Bauhaus Quartet, "Time-Space Modulator"(Barking Hoop) [ballou, Malaby, Lindberg] Tony Malaby, Elvind Opsvik, & Jeff Davis, "Tone Collector" (Jazzaway) Paul Motian Band, "Garden of Eden" (ECM) [septet w/ Cheek, Malaby, Cardenas, Monder, Bro, Harris] All CDs & inserts in tip-top shape.
  5. It's certainly beginning to look that way. Really a crying shame. Of all the remastering formats, 20-bit K2 is my favorite. Recordings seemed very natural to my ears, and did not have that harsh, steroid-pumped sound of some of the RVGs. Another sign that the Western civilization is crumbling that Concord has decided to issue RVGs rather than K2s.
  6. About a month ago, I sent back my Prima/Monone, Herman Capitol, and Mildred Bailey sets back to Mosaic, along with $30, and got back in exchange Farlow, Farmer/Golson, and Johnny Smith sets. I just was not listening to the former three, and I could tell that I originally purchased them and kept them around because I thought I *should* have them. Now, I have sets that I really want to listen to. Jazz should be pleasurable, not work or duty.
  7. Sorry. I did not mean anyone should go through the trouble of typing or faxing. I thought someone may have saved the discography page from the Mosaic website before the set went out of print. If anyone did do that, I'd be grateful for a posting. If not, no big deal. Sorry for the miscommunication earlier. Dave, thanks for your kind offer. But I think I should be able to find the info elsewhere without having to put you through the trouble.
  8. Does anyone have the discography for this set that he can put up? Thanks in advance.
  9. ECM sound? Care to elaborate? Not sure what this means. I mean the reverb-rich sound that makes it seem that the recording was done in a large stone church. Also the spare, slow sound that is meant to produce elegance, but all too often seems to border on New Age.
  10. PM sent regarding Michiel Braam & Gravitones CDs. Thanks!
  11. My recent visit to Italy motivated me to try some Italian jazz, and I picked up some Enrico Rava CDs. I am very much taken with them. These days I don't really listen to much straight ahead recordings made after mid-1960s. I find that I much prefer the older recordings to the newer ones when it comes to the standard bop/modal fare. But these Rava recordings are really first rate, and I am not quite sure why. I think a large part of it has to do with Rava's beautiful sound that is wistful but not overly sentimental. He doesn't bully you emotionally as some other recent American trumpeters do. In any case, I recommend the ones I have: "Full of Life" (Cam) [pianoless quartet] "La Dolce Vita" (Cam) [quartet w/ Bollani] "Renaissance" (Venus) [quartet w/ Bollani] There is also "Tati" (ECM), but I find that least congenial of the set I have. ECM sound is a put-off for me. I wish that people like Wynton Marsalis would try to make recordings like these.
  12. I guess I am a bit disappointed in this set of singles as well. The first batch was so good, I was hoping for similar items. In particular, I was hoping for more Al Cohn dates. But the announcement of the Ellington box makes up for the disappointment.
  13. I thought a new CD was coming out some time this spring. Eagerly awaited.
  14. You can order from Winkelmann, but not from Weber. And the CDs I want are from Weber.
  15. Thanks for the info. So, does anyone know whether there is a convenient way of getting Enja-Weber CDs in the US? I guess I could order using Amazon.de, but would like to avoid that route since shipping is quite expensive.
  16. I am quite puzzled by Enja. First, it seems that there are two different record companies by that name, both out of Germany. Second, it seems that while many titles are available in Germany, they are not in North America. Am I right in thinking that there is no US distributor? Is there a good way to get Enja CDs? I am particularly interested in Aki Takase CDs on Enja-Weber.
  17. I think Mosaic has been thinking of the Konitz and Giuffre sessions for a while now. In the past I got some encouraging e-mails from MC. But I do not know what the status of these possible sets is now. And my understanding is that the Jamal set is held up by Jamal himself being very tentative about the idea. I think MC is all for such a set. In addition to these sets, I would like to see the Decca Studio Sessions released as a Mosaic set. And as for Sony/BMG, I would like to see some Vogue sessions released. I once sent Mosaic a message suggesting a set of early Martial Solal sessions, and MC wrote back to say that he likes the idea. A set that I think is in the works is a collection of RCA sessions involving Al Cohn, Joe Newman, Freddie Green, et al. I'm pretty psyched about that set, and I hope it comes out soon.
  18. I've really enjoyed their recent Jimmy Raney & Herb Ellis releases. Now are these parts of what was originally the mini-LP series? Or are they a separate series? It seems that Verve would do a lot better to just stick with one series and put them out in jewel cases. Greater chance of eliciting some loyalty and trust from customers that way. Their offerings seem a mess to me. At least 3 or 4 series with confusingly similar names.
  19. Is this the going rate for this set? Sigh... I guess I will never get it.
  20. Lon, Sorry to ask a philistine question, but is "Pete Kelly" a small group or a big band session? Thanks. I desire for the Mosaic small group BG sessions is obviously not just for the Peggy Lee vocals. I just love BG small group sessions -- Capitol and RCA sessions come to mind. I love BG small group sessions too, and have tracked down all I can. . . just aren't any Lee vocals on the small group Columbias I've found. "Pete Kelly's Blues" was a movie starring Jack Webb as a Bix like character. Totally unconvincing in that regard. Peggy Lee had an interesting part as an alcholic and bipolar singer. . . she was nominated for an academy award. The band was a septet I think, sort of a Hollywood version of dixie material. There were about four or five lp and ep combinations of material from the film and by the core musicians outside the film that are really nice. Dick Cathcart. . . I really like his playing, he "ghosted" Webb's trumpet in the film. (Lee Marvin sort of was playing Pee Wee Russell. .. ) There was Decca release that had a few Lee songs and Ella's contribution. Mahbe one day they'll make and expanded version as a "Verve Master Edition." (Yeah right.) Lon, Tower lists this BG small group CD from Columbia that has 5 numbers with Peggy Lee singing: http://www.towerrecords.com/product.aspx?p...t=Benny+Goodman

  22. Just got this myself, and like it a lot. Do people know of other small to mid-size group Peggy Lee recordings? I am aware of Black Coffee, Basin Street East, and Mink Jazz, and of course the Mosaic set. Are there other ones? It would be great if Mosaic at some point releases Benny Goodman Columbia small group recordings -- I think there are a number of Lee vocals on those.
  23. I got "Goodbye" this past week, and I must admit that my initial reaction was disappointment. But it seems to get better with repeated listening. The last track is so good, I wonder why Stenson did not record more uptempo numbers. I cannot help thinking that some of the slow tracks have dashes of "corn".
  24. Okka Disk's website has been down for some time now. Does anyone know what is going on?
