  1. A while ago, I bought this set from a friend for a modest price, and for this reason I do not feel right about selling it. But since I have acquired a nice CD version of the Vogue sessions, in which I was chiefly interested, I would like to trade this set for another box set. Everything in this set is in excellent condition. The only blemish is a small scratch on the front panel of the box -- about 1/3 of an inch long. I'd be interested in getting in return another OOP Mosaic CD set in a similarly excellent shape if that would be possible. If that fails after a while, I'd be interested in exploring a trade for an in-print Mosaic set. I realize that some (if not most) of the sets I list below may not be equivalent in value to this Monk set. In that case, I hope we can work something out in terms of cash, other CDs, etc. The OOP sets I am interested in are: 114. Art Hodes 117. Buddy DeFranco 125. Shorty Rogers 152. Eddie Condon 157. George Shearing 186. Stuff Smith I am also interested in obtaining: Roland Kirk, "Rahsaan: Complete Mercury Sessions" (Mercury/Universal) Please let me know if you are interested.
  2. I know this will come as a heresy to some of you, but I've always felt a bit ambivalent about Coltrane -- especially his Impulse period. On the one hand I can see that he is being quite passionate and amazingly virtuosic in his playing, but he seems sorely in need of an editor who could have told him to cut things short when he starts repeating phrases over and over again. Now, I've just ordered the "Live Trane" set issued by Pablo/Fantasy. But since ordering the set, I've re-listened to some of his Impulse recordings (same period as the set), and have come away a bit underwhelmed, at times annoyed, at times even bored. Now, I got a terrific price for the set. Do I return it? Please let me know if you think that this live set is quite different from some of his Impulse sessions of the same period. I'm afraid of returning the set and later regretting it.
  3. Does anyone know what the deal is with this one? Why isn't it being released?

  5. The Montreaux/Berlin Concerts were released on CD as "Anthony Braxton Live" by RCA in 1990. I found a copy in a decent shape a month or so ago on Amazon Marketplace for $14 or $15. I have no idea how rare this is, as I found a copy as soon as I started looking for it. It is wonderful music and goes very well with the "Dortmund (Quartet) 1976" on HatArt. Yes, a Braxton Arista sessions box set would be the best re-issue possible! Good luck.
  6. Does anyone know of what the deal is with the two trio recordings that Sam Rivers may or may not have released on Rivbea Sounds? These are "Concept" and "Firestorm". I cannot find these anywhere in Amazon, Half, or eBay. But some indications on the web are that they were released in 1995 and 2002 respectively.

  9. Thanks, everyone. Just placed an order for 3 CDs.
  10. Newbury lists many CDs on Amazon. I was wondering whether anyone has any experience of ordering from them and getting any promos or cutouts. Thanks in advance.
  11. I once e-mailed Mosaic about "Good Friday Blues", and got a message back from MC saying that they (MC said "we", which could mean Mosaic or Blue Note, I guess) will figure out a way to release this session one way or another.
  12. But don't you think that it is the small-group nature of these recordings that make them especially attractive? That is one reason why I for one find them so attractive.
  13. So, after reading these posts, I got a little antsy and ordered this set. That breaks my resolution not to order Mosaics for a while unless they go on the running low list. You guys are responsible. I hope you are happy.
  14. The Ashby recording has Frank Wess and Roy Haynes on it. How bad can it be?
  15. Ethan Iverson's blog has got me curious about the 1970s recordings by Keith Jarrett with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian. So, here is a philistine question: Does Jarrett vocalize (i.e. moan, screech, etc.) on these early recordings as he does in the more recent ECM recordings? I'm afraid that except in the case of Bud Powell, vocalizing by pianists is a real turnoff for me -- even a deal-breaker in many cases. I wish that I weren't so shallow and can overlook things like this, but there it is. I can't help it, and I've long ceased struggling. So, any info about this issue would be appreciated.
  16. I would like to see the Zoot Sims Pablo sessions. The Japanese 20-bit K2 release of "If I am Lucky" I have is so much superior in sound to the domestic version. I would love to see the K2 treatment of all of these sessions, though that certainly seems far-fetched now.
  17. Could be Johnny Griffin with Strings and Brass: White Gardenia - Riverside 387/Original Jazz Classics 1877. One of the titles on that album is "Left Alone". Griffin discography AMG That sounds plausible. Or perhaps it is supposed to be Mal Waldron's "All Alone"? Waldron also had a recording on Bethlehem called "Left Alone".
  18. 41816; johnny griffin; left alone Does this recording exist? Or is this a typo?
  19. I wish that Sony/Legacy would reissue all of the Rollins RCA sessions on individual CDs the way they do with Miles Davis, Brubeck, and Monk. When are we going to reap the benefits of the merger?
  20. Both are definitely out of print. You have to find copies through Amazon marketplace or eBay. I just sold my copy of "Basel" on Amazon. I had made it available here, but no one wanted it at the time.
  21. I recommend the Ab Baars recordings on the Dutch label Geestgronden. They are trio recordings with de Joode on bass and van Duynhoven on drums -- both great and very precise players. Baars plays clarinet and tenor sax. He studied with John Carter, and his clarinet playing is obviously influenced by Carter. His tenor playing sounds to me to have the best qualities of Ayler and Von Freeman. The recordings I know are: Sprok A Free Step (John Carter tunes) Songs (American Indian songs & 1 Ives song) There is also "Four" (Data), which is a quartet recording with Roswell Rudd, who inserts some bizarre soliloquy during a medley. "Party at the Bimhuis" (Wig) has trio recordings and also other recordings with guests. One with Guus Janssen on piano is fabulous, and the playing of Monk's "Reflections" with Misha Mengelberg on piano may be the best recording of that tune.
  22. Wow!! That's great. I'm a big McHenry fan. Those other guys are pretty good too.
  23. My fave: Mulligan CJB. Second: Dhango Reinhardt. Also very fond of my first Mosaics: Curtis Fuller & Thad Jones.
  24. I got this one. I really like it. There is not that sense of anything-can-happen as there is in his early recordings. But still a very fine album. But for the life of me, I don't know why he prefers an electric bass to a real one. The plucking sound of a standup bass is one of the best sounds of jazz.
  25. I was wondering what people thought of this recording. Been getting more into Rollins recordings from 1950s lately, and I thought I should give a more recent recording a try. This one seems most likely to resemble his earlier recordings -- in terms of both music selection and lineup. Have some qualms about the electric bass, but perhaps it won't be too glaring or intrusive. I don't know why the 1950s Rollins recordings did not "work" for me before. Now they seem fantastic. His sound is so much more compelling than other tenor sax players.
