  2. Weird how some musicians' playing just sneak up on you. Despite all the glowing reports, I did not *get* Von Freeman for a long time. And now suddenly, he seems like the most cogent tenor player alive. I am really enjoying "The Improvisor" and "The Great Divide", both on Premonition. I am beginning to see where Ab Baars gets his sound. The booklet for "The Improvisor" has a small essay by Kevin Whitehead that says that Vonski has played in the past with Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg. Only if such sessions could be released as recordings!! As I was writing this, I got the following message from Premonition: "We're working on a new Von Freeman record at the moment. We're planning to record here in Chicago with several of his regular bands, sort of a smorgasboard of sidemen, but also add some NY guys in there as well. "The live recording that you are talking about, I believe, was supposed to be released by a european label associated with the Bim Huis in Amsterdam. In fact, I know they went all the way through to the mastering phase but then nothing. i don't know what the status of it is. It was recorded about 18 months ago live at the Bim Huis (the original). The personnel was Von, Han Bennick, Amina Claudine Meyers, and a great, dutch bass player whose name I'm spacing on (shame on me). Would very much like to hear it, for sure ..."
  3. Up with (last) price reductions!!
  4. Response sent by e-mail.
  5. I just picked this CD up, and I am afraid that it's not for me. The Okka Disc website says it is out of print, so I thought someone may make a better use of it. I bought it for $12.99 plus tax. I will charge $13 for the CD and shipping within US. Please let me know if you are interested. (Although the CD was shrinkwrapped when I bought it, the lower right hand side of the shrinkwrap (about 1 inch) was open, so that the lower right edge of the cardboard mini-LP cover is a tiny bit frayed.) Trio with Hamid Drake & Peter Kowald. THIS CD IS TAKEN!!

  7. I listened to some sound clips of the AE, and I do not think their recordings lend themselves nicely to sound clips. In other words, I don't think one can get a good sense of what they sound like from sound clips -- unlike say many hard bop recordings. But an impression I get is that the AE sounds a bit like the Gerry Hemingway Quintet recordings that I have come to really love. Is this the case, or am I completely off target? I do not have a whole lot of exposure to avant garde stuff. Aside from the Hemingway recordings and some Braxton stuff, most of my post-1967 stuff are Dutch.
  8. I've never heard the AEC. Is there a single CD that may be representative of their early recordings? I would like to try a small sample before purchasing a box set.
  9. Thank you. That seems promising. Is this vendor reliable? How long did it take for you to get the CD? How do you like the CD? I just saw Delius's quartet with Tristan Honsinger & Han Bennink. The best concert I've ever been to.
  10. Thanks. But I'm looking for 2 others: "Byas a Drink" & "Hidden Treasures".
  11. I am interested in getting 2 CDs by the Italian reeds player Daniele D'Agaro on the Italian label Nota. Does anyone know a good way to do this? I contacted D'Agaro himself who initially replied saying that he'll send me the CDs. But when I asked him how I can pay him, he did not respond. And he has now failed to respond to a number of e-mails. Ah these musicians with their complicated lives!!
  12. Thank you, all. I guess I'll be getting these soon.
  13. Jimmy Rowles in Zoot Sims's "If I'm Lucky".
  14. I am interested in your opinions about the quality of music and sounds on the following Art Blakey & Jazz Messengers live recordings: Live in Stockholm (1959) (Dragon) Lausanne 1960, 1st set (1960) (TCB) Lausanne 1960, 2nd set (1960) (TCB) Thanks for any help.
  15. Up with price reductions
  16. Up with more additions on 9/27.
  17. Thanks for your endorsements!! More to be listed soon. I am in the middle of trying to make my collection a little less obscene.
  18. Up for some notice.

  21. The Ahmad Jamal reissue is one of the most enjoyable CDs I've bought in recent months. Some time ago I wrote Mosaic about the possibility of a Mosaic set of Jamal Argo sessions. MC wrote back to say that he is interested but that Jamal is "ever so cautious" about the idea. I hope this happens. I hope some others write Mosaic to encourage MC to keep bothering Jamal about this.
  22. Does anyone own this recording? How is the performance? Sound quality? Is it worth seeking out? Thanks.

    Fantasy records

Not only does Fantasy have a very large and excellent holdings, I find its 20-bit K2 CDs to be the best overall sounding conventional CDs on the market. I eagerly await and purchase each set of new K2 releases, and I'm very frustrated at the slow pace of these releases. I think Tamaki Beck and the other Japanese gentleman who remaster these K2s have the most sensitive and reliable ears, and for this reason I am rather surprised that Fantasy will be beginning a line of releases remastered by Rudy van Gelder. I wish that Fantasy were doing more K2s by Beck and his crew. Blue Note's RVGs are a very mixed bag. Some of them sound pretty barbaric.
  24. I have the following books for sale. All of the books are in excellent condition, and in some cases practically new. Shipping is $4.50 each for the books in the first list; $2.50 for those in the second list. If you buy more than one, there may be a way to save in shipping. (I am trying to just charge the actual shipping costs.) All books are hardback with dustjacket, except for Delaunay’s Django book. I prefer to receive payments in PayPal -- from bank accounts only; no credit cards or debit cards. Alfred Brendel, Music Sounded Out $13 Gary Giddins, Visions of Jazz $15 Gary Giddins, Weather Bird $15 Gary Giddins, Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams (a black remainder mark on the bottom) $9 Dan Morgenstern, Living with Jazz $16 Ben Watson, Derek Bailey and the Story of Free Improvisation $16 Richard Cook, Blue Note Records $7 Charles Delaunay, Django Reinhardt $5
  25. What do people think about these? I am intrigued by the Konitz duets with Gerry Mulligan.
