  1. What, this one? Disco 3000 2CD set
  2. As far as I know Ace never released Sun recordings. U.K. label Charly issued lots of Sun material, but had to withdraw their releases because they turned out not to be legit. Rhino in the United States and Bear Family in Germany released CDs and boxed sets with Sun material that were legit. Looking at their website, Charly are still issuing Sun material. I have no idea whether they are legit or not. On the other hand, Charly used to issue Chess material but had to stop because of legal issues.
  3. Canon (and no doubt others) have scanners which come with an attachment that holds negative strips. The one I have separates out the individual photographs on the strip and generates multiple image files, which greatly reduces the amount of effort involved. I am not sure they all do that, some might produce one image that you then have to split off yourself into the individual pictures.
  4. New JSP Box available soon. Looking forward to this. I knew there were some sessions not currently available in the JSP sets (e.g. the Larry Adler session) but I had no idea there was this much Amazon Link
  5. Instead of a Logitech Squeezebox, how about a Logitech Squeezebox Radio. It's also an alarm clock, acts like a normal bedside radio but music is acquired via the net, not AM/FM Squeezebox Radio
  6. As a further disincentive to buy this, I am fairly certain that this is missing a track each from 'When Farmer Met Gryce' and 'Nica's Tempo'
  7. Seems as if it was posted on the Blue Note site on May 26th. Just goes to show how seldom members of this board feel a need to visit the Blue Note website nowadays. RIP Ruth
  8. Indeed. Especially given the existence of this Hawkins compilation "selected by Sonny Rollins". First track - Picasso Ultimate
  9. This amazon review implies that the new PD set does provide better sound quality on "Presents" Amazon Review
  10. It could be because of what we have been discussing, that the current CD issue of "Mingus Presents Mingus" is in very poor quality sound. Try to get hold of the "Mingus" CD which contains "Stormy Weather" from the same session but in much better quality sound. Sorry, I now see you have "Candid Dolphy" which also contains "Stormy Weather"
  11. Just to be clear here, it is only "Mingus Presents Mingus" that has poor quality sound.
  12. Has anyone actually bought or heard this set yet? It still isn't clear to me whether or not this uses the superior mono tapes of the quartet session. I was just listening to my playlist of the complete quartet session and 'Stormy Weather' is so superior in sound that I feel I need the rest of the session at the same quality, even if it is not in stereo. (Incidentally, 'Stormy Weather' is in stereo so there must be a story as to why the rest of the session is only available in such wretched stereo quality) I currently own the standard Candid CDs of these sessions.
  13. My Chess R&B Discography by Les Fancourt gives :-- Bo - Vocal/Guitar The Duchess - Guitar Jesse James Johnson - bass Billy Downing or Edell Robertson - drums Jerome - Maraccas
  14. This should be the first entry in the new thread - "Album Covers showing men with big hats"
  15. RIP Ray Long time Collets habitue here from about 1965. I found Ray a little aloof but I was very young then and I guess to him I was a mere whippersnapper. I used to love the English local newspaper cuttings they had on the wall, usually about small-time law breakers, who just happened to have names like Lee Morgan.
  16. BN T-Shirts at UNIQLO I regularly shop at Uniqlo and I know from personal experience that any normal person requires XL. Can't find any of the ones I might want here in that size.
  17. Eddie Gale - Ghetto Music Eddie Gale - Black Rhythm Happening.
  18. I think of Randy in terms of 'Randy's Records In Gallatin Tennessee' I still have a few of his mail order catalogues from the mid 60s. Bought a lot of STAX singles that way. RIP Randy Wood.
  19. I found the sound got better (less harsh) around disk 5. Hope you will find the same thing. I just played disc 5 and the harshness was still there. I'm now listening to track 6 on disc 6 and so far the sound seems a bit better on this disc. [edit] The sound on disc 6 is indeed better than on the previous 5. Great music! I was just reading the liner notes and I noticed that it states that the session with 'Love is like a Cigarette' which is at beginning of Disk 6 was the last one recorded on wax blanks. From the next session on, acetate blanks were used.
  20. Volume 10 out now JB 10
  21. This seems like a appropriate place to ask : What happened to the tapes found by Ravi in the Coltrane Home Loft? Did I imagine this? A few years ago Ravi found some tapes in his loft and was going to put them up for auction. They were not actually auctioned, they were bought privately before the auction. UMG were believed to be the buyers. Was the result of this just the things issued on the 2cd sets of 'Coltrane' and "Ballads'? I was hoping there was lot more.
  22. I think that they can be either needledrops or copied from CDs depending on availability I read somewhere (maybe here) that one of the Tubby Hayes was from LP. I think they are usually very dull sounding and will avoid them where it is easy to do so. The new Edmond Hall is very tempting though. I am talking about the '4LPS on 2CDs' series here. I think the Benny Goodman box sounds pretty good and I also like the Lionel Hampton series.
  23. Can someone with the Prevue CD please comment on the sound. Does it sound like a needledrop? Is it stereo or mono?Ok, spinning it now... it sounds ok - not great (some weird sound on the cymbals, the kind of thing that was noted with a few Blue Note CD reissues as "due to deterioration of the master tapes...", I guess). Definitely stereo.I'm in no position to confirm it's not a needledrop (I can't tell from distortion or any artifacts that hence it has to be a cleaned-up needledrop), but to me it doesn't sound like one. For sure, there are none of the obvious signs during the quiet parts or before and after the music. Also, to be noted, is the mix-up of the setlist:printed on the tray & sequence of Nat Hentoff's notes:1) Straight Ahead2) Violets for Your Furs3) Green Street Scene4) Chafic5) You Know That6) I Remember Clifford7) Short Bridgeactual sequence on my CD:1) Straight Ahead2) Violets for Your Furs3) Chafic4) I Remember Clifford5) Green Street Scene6) You Know That7) Short Bridgeso, #3-6 are jumbled around... no idea why or if it's a simple mistake - but it's easy to tell as everyone knows "I Remember Clifford" and Hentoff refers to "Chafic" as a waltz (which #3 of the CD clearly is).The Prevue CD has Hentoff's original and Mark Gardner's 1975 liner notes and it states that the reissue was produced by Don Schlittenn (mastered by Krieg Wunderlich - is that a real name or a weird nom-de-plume?Anyway, great album for sure! Thank you. From your description of the sound I think we can say that the Prevue and Fresh Sound CDs are sonically more or less equivalent. The Fresh Sound does have the tracks in the correct order though. I don't want to be a party-pooper but I played the Fresh Sounds CD this morning and it's pretty lo-fi. It IS in stereo but it's that sort of stereo that's left and right but no middle. It doesn't sound like a needle drop but the sound is very harsh and I find it difficult to listen to. However, the music itself is good so I suppose if this is as good as it gets....... I don't think anyone has claimed that this is a very good recording. The main thrust has been to determine which issues are not from a needledrop and are in stereo. In general I agree with your comments about the sound but I don't find it difficult to listen to.

  25. Obviously this is of no interest to you non-brits but according to Wikipedia (yes I know) JARO was indeed part of the J Arthur Rank Organisation. Wiki Link J Arthur Rank films were well known for starting with a Charles Atlas lookalike hitting a large gong with a hammer. I would love to know the names of the people who connect J Arthur Rank with Babs Gonzalez, J R Monterose and Kenny Dorham and whoever else recorded for JARO.
