  1. That's awesome, Dan! I'm sure it had to make you feel GOOD!
  2. Next up: The Crusaders - Scratch (Chisa-Blue Thumb, 1974)
  3. Mose Allison once said that he thought of his piano playing as jazz and his singing as blues. Since his notoriety came from singing, it's easy to overlook Allison's jazz piano playing. (I know I did for a long time.) But his pianism is just as interesting and distinctive as his singing. For example, check out "Devil in the Cane Field" with Addison Farmer (b) and Ronnie Free (d) in 1959:
  4. Now spinning: Mose Allison - Ol' Devil Mose (Prestige, 1979) LP 1 - originally released as Ramblin' with Mose (rec. 1958) - with Addison Farmer (b) and Ronnie Free (d) Another wonderful Prestige 2-fer. This set focuses on Allison's piano playing rather than his singing; there are just four vocal tracks spread across the two LPs. EDIT Onward to LP 2 - originally released as Autumn Song (rec. 1959)
  5. Stone Alliance [Gene Perla, Don Alias, Steve Grossman] - Stone Alliance (PM, 1976)
  6. Monnette Sudler Sextet - Brighter Days for You (SteepleChase, 1978) with: - Marimba – Khan Jamal - Piano – Oliver Collins - Bass – Tyrone Brown - Drums – Newman Baker - Congas, Percussion – William Duke Wilson
  7. Bach: The French Suites / Glenn Gould (Sony) Disc 1 - Nos. 1 - 4
  8. This again: That looks interesting, Ken. Whaddya think of it?
  9. Drew Gress - Sky Inside (Pirouet, 2013) with Tim Berne (as), Ralph Alessi (tr), Craig Taborn (p), and Tom Rainey (d)
  10. Yes. Perhaps most surprising are the country tunes -- but much like Ray Charles did, Hartman makes them his own. The photo of Donaldson on the back is excellent too. Simple but strong. That face is expressing a great deal without words.
  11. Yes! Hank Jones at the very top of his game.
  12. Lou Donaldson - Cosmos (Blue Note, 1971) with Melvin Sparks (g), Leon Spencer (org), Jerry Jemmott (b), Idris Muhammad (d), and others Such a great record.
  13. Now streaming: Johnny Hartman - Today (Perception, 1972) with George Coleman
  14. THE COMPLETE REGGIE WORKMAN ON DENON (1977-78): Leader, Sideman, and A & R Leader Reggie Workman First - Conversation (1977) Reggie Workman - The Works of Workman (1978) Sideman Bridgewater Brothers - Lightning and Thunder (1977) Bridgewater Brothers - Generation Suite (1978) Grachan Moncur III - Shadows (1977) Max Roach - Live in Tokyo, Vols. 1 & 2 (1977) Hilton Ruiz - Fantasia (1977) Archie Shepp - Ballads for Trane (1977) Sonny Stitt - Moonlight in Vermont (1977) Mickey Tucker - Sweet Lotus Lips (1978) A & R Alex Blake - Especially for You (1978) Walter Davis Jr. - Abide With Me (1977) Tommy Flanagan - Alone Too Long (1978) Tommy Flanagan & Kenny Barron - Together (1978) Billy Harper - Soran-Bushi, B.H. (1978) Billy Harper - Knowledge of Self (1978) Archie Shepp - On Green Dolphin Street (1978) Archie Shepp - Lady Bird (1978) John Stubblefield - Midnight Over Memphis (1978) Kazumi Watanabe - Lonesome Cat (1977) I think others have proposed variations on this idea before. And I realize that it's probably neither feasible nor commercially viable. That said, I think it would make a fascinating set. Also, the music is not readily available; it hasn't been reissued on Euro PD and grey market labels (yet). Another thing to consider: Since Denon was very focused on audio quality, a set like this set might make a splash in the audiophile marketplace -- at least among those audiophiles who aren't anti-digital. I assume these twenty-one LPs would translate into about a dozen CDs. I'd buy it. In a heartbeat.
  15. I'm a fan of Hilton Ruiz, and I had NO IDEA that this existed. Thanks for the heads-up, jazzcorner!
  16. Prompted by the @Dan Gould post above:
  17. All great stuff. The Grey-Forrest pairing is right on! Dan, have you heard Al Grey's Struttin' and Shoutin' (Columbia), which was recorded around the same time? It's an amazing large ensemble album featuring Jimmy Forrest, Cecil Payne, Waymon Reed, and a bunch of other heavies. AFAIK, it's never been reissued in any digital format. Vinyl only. Definitely worth seeking out. NP: 😍
