  1. I think Scherchen was a terrific conductor. Right on !!! 🙂
  2. Now playing: Chico O'Farrill and His Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra - Pure Emotion (Milestone, 1995)
  3. Good karma coming Eric's way.
  4. Interesting video. I had no idea that he'd been a boxer. R.I.P.
  5. I'm streaming this Art Hirahara new release after receiving a Posi Tone email about it this morning:
  6. Next up: Dr. Lonnie Smith - Spiral (Palmetto, 2010) with Jonathan Kreisberg (g) and Jamire Williams (d)
  7. Now playing: Blue Mitchell - S/T (Mainstream, 1971) with Jimmy Forrest (ts), Walter Bishop, Jr. (p), Larry Gales (b), and Doug Sides (d)
  8. Subjective musical value outweighs objective monetary value!
  9. I have the LP and the CD. You're right: There are two cuts on the LP -- "In a Mellotone" and "Summertime" -- that don't appear on the CD. Likewise, there are five cuts on the CD that aren't on the LP. Also, each format features different track sequencing. It's a jumble! That said, I think both the AQ and sequencing are preferable on the CD. As an album, the CD just works better. As for Shirley Scott organ playing on the Live at Rick's LP: I think that's mistake in Discogs. OTOH, I haven't heard the LP in a while, and my memory isn't what it used to be. Hmm. I'm not familiar with Truly Wonderful. . . . Might need to look into that.
  10. Originally released (with fewer cuts) as Live at Rick's on the Aviva label. Shirley Scott plays piano on this one. She sounds just as good on that instrument as she does on organ.
  11. Ooooh. I've never heard that one -- but it looks interesting!
  12. Prime Art Farmer. Superb!
  13. Very nice. Thanks for sharing that, Rooster.
  14. How interesting. IIRC, Schneiderman was to returning to school when he left TanaReid. But I didn't realize that he'd earned his Ph.D. and was working as an academic now. . . . The story comes full circle. NP: Norman Simmons Quartet - Ramira the Dancer (Spotlite, 1977) with Lisle Atkinson (b), Al Harewood (d), and Ralph Dorsey (perc)
  15. Thanks. Now playing: O Universo Musical de Baden Powell (Sunnyside/Universal, 2 CDs) Disc 2 - A Selection from the Festival Years (1970-1977)
  16. Next up: Eddie Palmieri - Listen Here! (Concord Picante, 2005) with: Nicholas Payton, Brian Lynch - trumpet Conrad Herwig, Doug Beavers - trombone Donald Harrison, Ivan Renta - alto saxophone Michael Brecker, David Sanchez - tenor saxophone John Scofield - guitar Regina Carter - violin John Benítez, Christian McBride - bass Horacio "El Negro" Hernández - drums Giovanni Hidalgo - percussion
  17. More from Akira Tana & Rufus Reid:
  18. I think you might enjoy it, T.D. Schneiderman's playing is very strong. I remember reading an interview with Reid, and he explained how devastated he was when Schneiderman later left the band -- because the two of them had such a tight musical connection. . . . I don't have any of Schneiderman's work as a leader. Any particular album(s) that you would recommend?
