  1. Now listening to Robert Simpson's 8th Symphony, as heard on this disc:
  2. R.I.P. I'll have to pull this from the shelf today and give it a spin in Leroy Williams' honor:
  3. More Nancy Wilson: Disc 1 of 3
  4. Yep. It's my favorite Dylan record.
  5. Tito Puente - Party at Puente's Place (Concord Picante) Disc 1 - originally released as On Broadway (1983)
  6. Ken, I've used VPI's record cleaning fluid for years. Never had any problems -- except for once, years ago. In this one case, the cleaning fluid developed milky-white clumps in it. Like you, I filtered them out, and the fluid seemed to work as usual. Thankfully, it's never recurred.
  7. Now this: Count Basie - Paradise Squat (Verve, 2 LPs) A nice slice of Basie pie.
  8. A few discs I ordered today. More stuff to fuel my ongoing vocal jazz kick: Mel Torme Sings Fred Astaire (Bethlehem) Helen Merrill - Clear Out of This World (Antilles/Gitanes) Nancy Harrow - Secrets (Soul Note)
  9. Just go to https://jazzinthe80s.blogspot.com/ There are navigation buttons near the bottom of the page -- click Older Posts and/or Newer Posts -- if you want to look around and not just see the most recent posts on the front page. (You can also use the Blog Archive function -- in the right column -- to view older posts.) The first sentence in each entry states whether it's by Dan or me (Scott).
  10. and Two superb vocal jazz albums, IMO.
  11. Mraz, Beirach, and Hart are three of my favorite musicians -- so I suppose it's not surprising that I think this disc is terrific.
  12. Expanded CD version
  13. Collectors' fetishization? Yeah. OK. I can see that. For sure. But trivialization? How so? Because the vinyl is pink instead of black? Because it's a limited edition release? Would it have been different if the vinyl color was green? Or orange? If I had purchased the pink, limited-edition version instead of the black version that I bought, what would that mean exactly? How would it be different? Because I think the music would sound exactly the same. This feels a lot to me like classical music audiences that become outraged when performers choose not to wear tuxedos. It represents a break in tradition -- and that causes consternation among some folks who see it as "disrespectful" -- even though a performer's clothing has no effect on the music whatsoever. That's my take.
  14. Now spinning: PAUSA reissue of this classic
  15. Glad to hear that your cases (so far) aren't severe. Hope you're both back to tip-top shape soon.
  16. The last Weather Report album in spirit if not in fact -- since they phoned in This Is This to fulfill contractual obligations. So beautiful.
  17. Aside from a few exceptions (like this Real Gone Music reissue), that's pretty much been my strategy too. During the CD boom in 80s and 90s, when everyone was dumping their LPs, I brought lots of vinyl. Now, it's the opposite. Yes. This is my point of view also. Anything that keeps the music available in some physical form is a positive, no?
  18. I don't need any of those booklets, Pim (or have any duplicates to share) -- but I love the idea & generous impulse. Good karma flowing your way.
  19. Crystal Comments would be my first choice too. I also dig Heritage (Concord), which is a more traditional alto-plus-rhythm date.
