  1. Weekly Recap - PLAYING FAVORITES: Reflections on Jazz in the 1970s Joseph Jarman & Don Moye featuring Johnny Dyani – Black Paladins (Black Saint) Beaver Harris 360° Music Experience ‎- Negcaumongus (Cadence Jazz) Betty Carter – The Audience with Betty Carter (Bet-Car/Verve) David Murray Trio – Sweet Lovely (Black Saint) Bill Evans - Paris Concert: Edition One and Paris Concert: Edition Two (Elektra-Musician/Blue Note) Dannie Richmond Quartet - Ode to Mingus (Soul Note) George Adams - Don Pullen Quartet – Don't Lose Control (Soul Note) An especially strong week for Giovanni Bonandrini's Black Saint & Soul Note labels. Four out of seven entries. But all seven records are solid hits. No bloopers here, no cheap stuff. We're talking line drives that leap off the bat. You know the sound: Crack! A few fly right outta the park. ... Black Paladins, for example. O.K. Enough with the baseball stuff. What say you?
  2. My reaction every time I hear the title cut on this disc: "Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaahhhh!" Exactly.
  3. Solo Monk, recorded in 1971
  4. Mark Helias' Open Loose - Atomic Clock (Radio Legs, 2006) with Tony Malaby and Tom Rainey; Ellery Eskelin also sits in on one cut
  5. This is great, Pim! I'm looking forward to reading every entry!
  6. Thanks, amigos! I'm grateful for our online jazz community.
  7. Eleven more entries. At that point, it will be 366 posts, one for each day of 2020.
  8. Good stuff ! NP:
  9. After a morning of Christmas music -- Ella, Sinatra, Bing, Elvis -- I'm now listening to James Moody: Another Bag (Argo, 1962) Moody's second collaboration with arranger and composer Tom McIntosh
  10. Seconded! Great program!
  11. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! Peace & Love to All!
  12. Prokofiev's Symphony No. 7 from this set:
  13. More Bill Evans:
  14. I agree with you, Allen. Regardless of Haig's faults as a human being -- and they were considerable -- he was a fantastic pianist. Similarly, I've read interviews with Carol Sloane where she talks about Jimmy Rowles' abusiveness towards her while they were together. He did some terrible things. But I still listen to Rowles' music. Maybe I shouldn't. But (in most cases) I think it's best to make a distinction between artists and their art.
  15. Prompted by the Billy Hart thread:
  16. Oh yeah! That Charles Lloyd quartet with Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin, and Hart was fantastic. *********** Another excellent Billy Hart sideman date: Mads Vinding Trio - Open Minds (Storyville, 2011) Hardly made a ripple at the time it was released -- but it's a GREAT record, IMO.
  17. Best of luck to you, Allen. I hope the surgery resolves everything for you fully.
  18. Yep, I do have Mother Ship. It's another Larry Young record that I just "discovered" this year. Tracked it down after hearing Of Peace and Love. I dig Mother Ship. But I think my two favorite Larry Young records are Of Peace and Love and Lawrence of Newark. They're both strange... in a good way.
  19. Yes, it's a special record. Wasn't aware of this. Thanks Jim!
  20. Yes! Wonderful interpretations! And the Rackham cover illustrations are icing on the cake.
