  1. Duke Ellington - The Feeling of Jazz (Black Lion) 1962 recordings from the stockpile.
  2. Jimmy McGriff & Groove Holmes - Giants of the Organ Come Together (Groove Merchant)
  3. Clare Fischer Orchestra featuring Jerry Coker - Extension (Discovery; originally released on Pacific Jazz) I bet that sounds great. I need to track down that LP. I think that's one of KB's very best records.
  4. Sonny Rollins Quartet - Tenor Madness (Prestige/OJC)
  5. Now listening to this CD (again): Richard "Groove" Holmes - Comin' on Home (Blue Note) Earlier: Ben Webster - Live at the Haarlemse Jazzclub (Limetree) Pure gold. IMHO, Al Cohn was at his very best while he was making records for Xanadu in the latter half of the Seventies.
  6. Sonny Rollins - Sonny, Please (Doxy/Emarcy) Hard to believe that this came out more than ten years ago.
  7. Randy Weston & Melba Liston - Volcano Blues (Gitanes/Universal) with an excellent band that includes Teddy Edwards, Hamiet Bluiett, Wallace Roney, Benny Powell, Ted Dunbar, Charlie Persip, et al
  8. I'm re-reading Donald Maggin's biography of Dizzy Gillespie.
  9. McCoy Tyner - Fly with the Wind (Milestone) with Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, and a host of others (including strings)
  10. Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane (New Jazz / OJC) with Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb
  11. The back cover of Dave Liebman & Richie Beirach's Forgotten Fantasies from 1976: Attire so bad that it's almost charming. And, since Forgotten Fantasies is one of my all-time favorite records, more proof that "you can't judge a book by it's cover" (or back cover). The worst thing about this photo of Phil is that the get-up seems like a costume. It's not him. He's just trying to "get with the times." Other people -- like Miles -- could've pulled this off. Not Phil. Later in the 70s, Woods' clothes seemed much more natural, less costume-like. The floppy hat. That's Phil.
  12. Yes! And Johnny Griffin sounds so good too. (Even if Monk & Blakey are at the very center of things.)
  13. Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk (Atlantic) Listened to this on the way into work this morning, and it really whacked me upside the head in a wonderful way. So many felicitous touches by the entire band.
  14. Louie Bellson - Side Tracks (Concord, 1980) with Don Menza, Sam Noto, et al Louie Bellson's 7 - Live at the Concord Summer Festival (Concord, 1976) with Pete Christlieb, Blue Mitchell, et al
  15. V.S.O.P.: The Quintet - Tempest in the Colosseum (Sony / Wounded Bird)
  16. Timeless All Stars - Timeless Heart (Timeless) Gorgeous.
  17. The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Further Out: Miro Reflections (Sony Legacy)
  18. Oscar Peterson & Dizzy Gillespie (Pablo)
