As I was mentioning in another thread, I wondered if many of the BN titles really need to be remastered into RVG editions. I suppose Blue Note thinks so, or they wouldn't remaster and reissue them. Or do they remaster them in part because the older issues are out of print and this is a way of making them available once more? At any rate, can you think of any BN sessions that really need to be remastered or given the RVG treatment? For me one really stands out. It's Jackie Mclean's "Demon's Dance." I can barely hear it when I put it on. Now granted, recent lengthy sessions of listening to Roland Kirk at very LOUD VOLUMES may have played a role here, but I don't think so. Any one agree? Can you think of any others?

This is a more interesting list to me though I've got them all except the Powell. I might upgrade some of them. Don't know if I noticed that the sound was inferior on any of them: at least inferior enough to warrant them to be remastered. I voted for "Adam's Apple." Great session. Again, I will be careful in the future regarding spending hard earned $$$ on "upgrading" cds I'm comfortable with. Why doesn't Blue Note RVG something that clearly needs it like Jackie Mclean's "Demon Dance." That gives me an idea for a thread....

It's tough for kids. I've seen my kid play other kids when I take him to the chessclub every Tuesday evening. He seems to play pretty much immediately. I tell him, "Don't play with your hands; sit on them!" One of the local kids is ranked pretty high in the State rankings for kids of his age (he's 10.) He plays in some of the local tournaments I play in. He'll make his move then run around noisily in the halls between moves. They're just bursting with energy. Chess should be banned to all kids under the age of 13! B) No, seriously, now there are grandmasters that age! As an adult you hate to play a junior in a tournament. You never really know whether this is the second coming of Bobby Fisher or not. The kid could be in a middle of a big growth spurt of something. Then there's the annoyance of the chess Moms and chess Dads. Anyone who played Little League baseball would know what I'm talking about here. I played a 16 year old that last tournament in Cleveland in the first round and that father was scowling at me from the back of the room. He would come up to the board during the game whenever it was my turn to whisper loudly to his son, "Do you want a banana? A banana? You sure you are okay?" He never did it unless I was on the clock. Of course, I could have complained, but my psychology is not to sweat the small stuff and just beat my opponents, which is exactly what I did. During the game, I walked over to the Dad when his kid was on the clock, and idly said, "Must be tough to be a chess Dad." "Whaddya mean?" he asked as if offended. "Well, I dunno, I've got a son and I don't encourage him to play tournaments yet. I'd imagine it would be hard on a parent. How could I concentrate on my game?" "It's good for him; you should push him to reach his full potential." Anyway, the guy was one of those pushy parents. He has his right to be. But I won't be that way. -

Yeah, and one other thing I forgot to mention: prodigies have been identified in three main disciplines: mathematics, music, and chess. Seems to suggest some kind of kinship between the three. Don't look at me though, I can't play music and I suck in math. Like a kid, I'm just good at games. Somehow games seem to justify the expenditure of intense concentration. I beat up on my kid!! Can't give them an inch; otherwise, they'll take a mile. (Actually, I allow him to draw a couple of games.) At 10 years old, he has displayed no particular talent for the game. As a parent, I'm too lazy to pass on all my knowledge: "Go outside and leave me alone. Can't you see I'm studying chess???" "Teach you some chess openings?" "Hell, no, all kids are brain dead; you know why? Cause they can't look ahead! They do dumb things. Just like I can see way ahead the way you're lifting that big bottle of fruit punch out of the fridge that you are going to mess up that floor that I just cleaned three months ago." -

Actually, there is a lot of literature about how chess and music are connected. Many great chessplayers were also outstanding musicians and vice versa. I am not a musician so I cannot explain it well, but there are a lot of similarities between the two disciplines. For example, both chessplayers and musicians work out variations on a theme. It was all explained in the book ,"grandmaster of Chess," by Harold Schonberg. I quote from the book: "There is indeed a strong relation between chess and music. The three standard elements of a chess game-opening, middle game, and end game-bear a certain relationslhip to the three elements of a sonata movement-exposition, development, and recapitulation. Chess, like music, is basically an art of development, combination, and continuation." -
Christ, Moose, your latest obsession with GregM has been keeping you away from other important threads. How could you have been in the dark for so long? Kinda like that fellah who woke up from a long coma. You know this is a special batch if Moose is willing to shell out some coin! I am buying every fricking one of these, except I may hold off on the Rouse for a little while. I want them all BADLY!! I too cannot remember such an outstanding selection. I voted for Lee's "Sonic Boom," and only because people like Weizy would sell their TOJC copies for nothing less than $70 a pop! Been wanting that sucker for a long time. All the others are desired as well. Have to start saving up by placing ebay on my temporary "ignore" list.

I'm not enthusiastic about any of them, but my vote goes to "Indestructible." Mine has a bunch of surface scratches which don't affect play but affect my sense of self-satisfaction whenever I look at them! I will probably buy only three: "Indestructible," "our Man in Paris," and either the Silver or the Grant Green. I'm not upgrading just to have everything new. I'm keeping some of the older copies. I'm sick of spending money on remasterings.

Or any of the Farmer/Golson Jazztet sessions currently out of print. I love the two that I do have. Great collaboration. -

Cool program! Be sure to start posts on historical issues over here while you are studying. That would be great fun! Sorry, I cannot help you as I took my GRE back in 1982. Don't remember a thing about it. -
Thanks for the comments, mg333. I found your post very interesting and helpful.

Kobe outsmarted by a 19 year old

Amen! And I would like to add that although I don't know all the facts of the case, I believe that Mike Tyson served a jail term for something that was consensual. He was jailed for his reputation not his actions. -

Just picked up "Live in Montreux 1972" as well as "Volunteered Slavery." Will give my impressions of them once they arrive. So far, Kirk is still awesome! -
I don't understand the question either, Couw, but Jim does it for post counts!!

Kobe outsmarted by a 19 year old

For those of you who are old enough to have teenaged daughters, you'd no doubt bristle at the automatic presumption that this young girl is out to seek fame and fortune. You'd also know by now that sexual assault is rampant in this society - most of it never reported. This trial and Kobe's "defense" will merely insure that many more young women will be afraid to report rape and assault because of the price they'll have to pay in the media and the courtroom. Bryant's lawyer is one of the best and most aggressive in Colorado if not the country. She'll rip this young girl to shreds. Ugly times ahead. Excellent points, Ron. I don't have any daughters and my natural inclination is to trust Kobe Bryant as he couldn't be that stupid. Ron's post, however, makes me wonder... I guess some of these stars can develop a feeling of invulnerability. Can't imagine, however, someone forcing someone else into sex unless there were some kind of tacit signals or signs that it was the desired thing to do, and the stupid athlete thought that the girl was just putting up token resistance. I bow to your greater understanding of this issue, Ron. You may just as well be right. Hopefully the truth comes out of this trial, but then I think that trials are fora for lies (otherwise, there wouldn't be lawyers, i.e. people hired to speak FOR YOU.) Cynical bastard that I am, just as I believe that politicians exist in order to tell lies smoothly, so lawyers exist to do the same thing. -

I won the bidding on the item but not without a fight. I paid $100 for it. There are a few other Mercury sets available through CD Now, which seems to have joined with Amazon. Thanks for the heads up. My pocket is lighter but I'm better for it, I'm sure. -
Anyone seen or heard from Mny lately? Sure hope he's okay.

"Black Narcissus" is a beautiful tune as are many other Joe Henderson compositions. I also like "Step Lightly" and "Shade of Jade." "I Can't Get Started" is an alltime favorite as well, though I can't get past Clifford Brown's version. My vote goes for Clifford's version of the tune. Does anyone else have this tune on his "West Coast Jazz?" Awesome!
