  1. Appreciate all the info, everyone. I'm not switching from cds. I don't have excess money to burn. Not with my old Mercury Mystique. None of the information given here excites me to go out and seek a switch in technologies. Even if I were to contemplate such a switch I could envisage the potentiality that half my collection would be in one format while the other half is in another. Can you see BN ever reissuing things like Dorham, "Trompeta Toccata" on SACD? Unlikely. I'll keep my cds, thank you.
  2. I wish to put out the big WELCOME mat for Evan, who has joined our board upon my recommendation. Grab some java, sit down, and get to know the folks here. Don't forget to check out BN reissue thread on page 2 of the "Reissues" section. Our board leader is Jim Alfredson (B-3er) and he's got a terrific bunch of duputies helping out with things. Enjoy! Paul
  3. Those are confessions that should be given to a priest! Appreciate the honesty!
  4. Hi Leanne, Happy that you are joining us.
  5. Thanks for the info, Vibes.
  6. I remember Greg going on about them on BNBB, but I never bothered to read the threads. What exactly are SACDs? Do they play on regular cd players? Is the sound supposed to be better? I notice "Blue Train" is about to be reissued on SACD format. Should I upgrade? Thanks
  7. Yeah, Jim, which one's don't you like?
  8. Diz should have been left out of the poll. It not fair to the other great trumpeters. I voted for Dizzy of course. He was the "be" to Parker's "bop."
  9. I put on Jimmy Smith's "Organ Grinder's Swing" (Verve) and my walls get soooo greeeeeezzy the spiders fall off.
  10. Looks like most of the ones you're missing are the first series. pm'd you, JK
  11. What, you mean prostitution isn't legal? Agree with you on that one, Weizy.
  12. How about a greazy quintet: Organ: Big John Patton Guitar: Grant Green Trumpet: Blue Mitchell Tenor: Joe Henderson Drums: Ben Dixon
  13. Wow, Great points made by everyone. I dislike Dolphy in general and forgot to mention my distaste for "Out to Lunch" in particular. How can anyone NOT like "Basra?" I guess there's no accounting for tastes. And "Page One" by Henderson is terrific. That's the recording debut for "Recorda Me." Someone made the point about having high expectations and being disappointed. That describes me and "Davis Cup." Boy, was that a letdown! I also like the point Vibes made about something hitting you later on. I didn't care for "Blues for Lou," when I first bought it. Now I like it. Early Lee Morgan is not that good, but I do like "Candy." I also cannot get into Johnny Griffin, "A Blowing Session." Maybe the musicians are just too busy trying to outdo each other. The result is a big flop. I don't care for Cecil Taylor in general. His style is too thick and chaotic. I'm not a big Sam Rivers fan either, though I haven't yet heard "Fuschia..."
  14. What? This is sacreligious! Organ is the greaaaaziest of all instruments. I gotta listen to organ whenever I need to hear some real great greeeze. Finest instrument ever invented. Trumpet is next.
  15. I also have a hard time getting into Willette, "Stop and Listen," but I do very much like Mobley, "Slice of the Top." I do not care for Freddie Redd, "Redd's Blues," nor Wayne Shorter, "All Seeing Eye." I feel "Davis Cup" is an indifferent record. Was very disappointed with it.
  16. Cool! I'll keep an eye out for you. I'm up in Ann Arbor all the time. Let me know the exact date.
  17. I traded away or sold my Dizzy Reece stuff: "Star Bright," "Blues in Trinity," and "Coming On," though I thought the last one wasn't bad. So I pretty much share your views there. I am just exploring the Three Sounds right now. I like the Mitchell discs and I like Mobley's "Thinking of Home."
  18. That's probably 4-5 hours drive from Toledo. Jim Alfredson lives in Lansing, I think.
  19. I'm with you on those Moncurs, Lonson. I do like Moncur's contributions as a sideman on several sessions, such as Jackie Mac's "Destination Out." I also like his work with the Farmer/Golson Jazztet. However, those two Blue Note sessions left me cold. I did like Lee Morgan's blowing on "Evolution," however.
  20. Alright everyone. Don't view this as an exercise in negativity. View it as constructive criticism. This is not meant to start any fights. I have expressed elsewhere my dislike for Don Wilkerson's Blue Note output. I also did not like Freddie Roach, "Good Move" or Jackie Mclean, "Tippin the Scales." I felt that Jackie was totally uninspired on this session. I'll try to think of some others... Let's hear yours.
  21. Which part of Michigan do you live in, Chuck? I live in Toledo, Ohio, which is of course just on the border.
  22. Hmm, very encouraging reports so far. I do have "I Don't care who knows it." Would you guys compare the other stuff (Merry Ol Soul, Phantom, How Insensitive) to "I Don't Care who knows it?" Are they similar. My personal take on "I Don't Care" is that it is okay. Not terrific in any way, but not bad. I really like the Brazillian rhythms on "The Right Touch." Now that's a terrific session in my opinion.
  23. So that's the type of people who listen to your music, huh? No, really, I can't see the logic on how a ban on smoking in public places should take away your audience. Eventually, they'll filter back in. Catesta: we shall hear no more of your lengthy list of vices. Now be a good boy and counter some of Johnny's posts.
  24. Let's discuss that for a bit here. Many of you are salivating over the upcoming Duke Pearson Mosaic, which will focus on Duke's later stuff. AMG does not rate these sessions very highly, not that they represent the word of God, but apparently, there are some potentially cheezy vocals on some of the sessions. I don't recall which. Perhaps "Phantom," or "Merry ol Soul." What do you guys think about all this? Has anyone heard these later sessions, and can you give your opinion on them?
