Like every period in life, it would rate both a and a . Those were my college years, so for the most part it was fun. I went to college for six years including grad. school then I took off for Asia at the age of 24. Came back 11 years later. 24 and 25 were definitely I'm 43 years old now and as I look back on life, I feel I've experienced a stage of almost complete bliss around three different times of my life. This feeling of bliss never lasted longer than say, a two-year period. I feel I went through these "happy 2-year periods" around three times in my life. Here goes; age 8-10 growing up in Abaco, Bahamas. One word: FUCKING AWESOME!! (well that's two words) age 20-22 finishing up college and starting grad school. Great time. age 25-27 spent in Thailand having a blast. It's all been basically downhill from there. But at least I listen to some great shit now!

Spurs take game 1
connoisseur series500 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Shame on me, I didn't see the game till the end. I still don't know who won. Hope the Nets pulled it out. Anyone can win this series. When I ran that poll, just about everyone including myself thought the Spurs would take it. I now believe that the Nets could win if they want it badly enough. Again, anyone can win. It is an interesting series. On the one hand, I'd like to see nice-guy David Robinson bow out as a champion. Actually, the Spurs are a team of nice guys, but the Nets are underdogs and...you just can't help rooting for an underdog. -

Anyone interested? Also "Live in Montreux" with Joe Henderson is available. -
Ken Burns, "JAZZ"
connoisseur series500 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This is so true. Definitely one of my biggest complaints when I first saw the series. Of course, the reruns haven't reached this time period yet. Add the shortshrift for Bill Evans and Jimmy Smith. Definite weaknesses for sure. -
To quote the great Isaac Hayes, DAAAAAAAAAMN RIGHT!!!!! That sucker could start a greeeeaze fire!!! Yeah, Big AL!!!! :rsmile:

Happy to help, JK; and thanks for Big Lou! -
PBS has been showing Ken Burns, "JAZZ" on Monday evenings. I find myself caught watching it eagerly and getting involved with all the stories. This is the first time since it first came out that I've been able to view it. I recall that Chris had some serious issues with Burns and the job he did. I am curious if you could repeat some of that here, Chris, as I may benefit from your comments as I view the shows. Some other members have expressed criticism regarding Stanley Crouch and Wynton Marsalis, who do dominate this show. Here are a few of my observations so far: --Crouch makes some fantastic comments. I find him extremely interesting. I would really appreciate if others would comment upon what exactly they did not like about him and his contributions to the program. --Seems an incredible amount of attention is paid to Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. I'm convinced that Louis A. deserves his share, but Duke's music often leaves me cold. He is a good songwriter, and I recognize that, but his big band sound seems so dated. Charley Parker comes on the scene and blows away all that big band stuff. Now there's one of my jazz heroes for sure! --Marsalis makes some good comments, but I don't understand half of what he says. He is very enthusiastic. --Giddens and the other black Academic are very interesting. I don't care for the female Academic's comments. She seems to stretch her points. --Does Brubeck deserve all the attention he gets? Again, another one that leaves me cold.

Albums that define the Blue Note Sound

Anything Grant Green or Hank Mobley, or Lee Morgan did. -
I thank my father for not bringing me up in want. I thank him for serving the family, which he did. He never spent money on himself, and handed all the finances over to my mother. He has an incredible gift to be able to get along with everyone. I share some of those qualities and my father talks to strangers as if they'd known each other for years. He is still alive, but has retired to Florida. He is intelligent and he is funny. We still talk over the phone. We are different in that I like the arts while he is an engineer. He made the right moves by bringing us into this country. His first job out of school was as an engineer in a sugar factory in Jamaica. There is no opportunity there, and after ten rollicking years, he grew up and we moved on. Happy Father's Day!

To me, Organissimo is already the better board. What is there to miss?

Inspired by this thread, I decided to listen to Silver City once again. Wow, I like almost every track! I know it is uneven as much of Sonny's later work is, the guy is still fantastic at half-best! I'm now thinking about buying every individual Milestone once I get some money. Truly one of the greats.

Chick Corea
connoisseur series500 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Sorry, Joe, I didn't notice your post until now. It's a trio setting with Dave Holland on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums. Recorded on BN in 1970. It is actually a cd. I've got Chick Corea, "Live in Montreux" with Joe Henderson as well, which is available for trade. Recorded in 1981. -
Which is your favorite Bill Evans´ regular bassist
connoisseur series500 replied to EKE BBB's topic in Artists
I think Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez worked wonderfully together; in fact, perhaps even better than with Scott LaFaro. They certainly recorded more together. I particularly like "Blue in Green" a live set and the Montreux stuff. "Intuition" is very good. -
Pardon my ignorance but...

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
connoisseur series500 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
And to continue on... I cannot take any of John Coltrane's Impulse stuff after "Love Supreme." Actually, the title with "Crescent" and "Dear Lord" is fine, but after that...especially when Pharoah joined the scene. One of the owners of a cd exchange shop put on "Om," while I was in the shop. I told him that I likened it to showing all the holes in your underwear in public. It's too damned personal. Not for public consumption. Some of Coltrane's Prestige stuff in hard to bear as well. It is uneven material as it has its good spots as well. I dislike any of the "cool" school of jazz that I've heard. I like Getz' Bossa Nova, but cannot handle him otherwise. -
Where's Kevin when you need him? Keeevvviiinnnnnn!!!

Anyone interested in Chick Corea's "Song of Singing?" I am willing to trade mine if anyone has something suitable in exchange.

More confessions: I don't like the "Complete Herbie Nichols Sessions" on BN. I don't like some Monk. Man, these two guys are too difficult for my amateurish ears! I have kept about 5 Monk cds which I DO like, but there were many I didn't; for ex. the session he did with Art Blakey. Left me cold. I do like his stuff with Sonny Rollins. Those two played beautifully together. I do like "Mysterioso." Excellent throughout. But Herbie Nicholls... boring! -
I love Sonny too. I have a special attachment towards the Monk cds with Sonny sharing the bill, such as: Monk, "Brilliant Corners" Monk, "Thelonius Monk Quintet (with Sonny Rollins)" Monk, "Thelonius Monk/Sonny Rollins" (Prestige) Rollins, "Volume 2" RVG edition Listen to Rollins smoke "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" on "Tenor Madness." A good collection of his Milestone stuff is "Silver City." I gotta go back and listen to Sonny again. It's been a long time...
