  2. The Economist is a great mag. I used to subscribe but it got too expensive and the magazines started to pile up. Lots of reading.
  3. I get only one magazine and I always renew it. The Smithsonian
  4. Interview of Vassily Ivanchuk, who just won the Tal Memorial tournament. Chucky is popular with chess fans owing to his childlike demeanor. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=4869
  5. Nice guy, he may be, but he's definitely no "chess babe". Romanishin's picture was posted in the same story where I got the other two pics of chess babes. It just brought back a memory.
  6. Current US woman's champ, Anna Zatonskih (originally from the Ukraine) once told me a funny story about Vassily Ivanchuk and his former wife, Alisa Gallliamova. She told me that Chucky always lived in a world of his own. Anna had just moved to the US at that time and her English wasn't yet perfect, but she explained that they had a young child at the time, and the Ukrainian team used to joke about how "you had Vassily in one room studying chess while Alisa was in another room doing the same; while baby was in another room crying." Well maybe the story isn't too funny afterall, but the union of the three was not obviously destined to last.
  7. GM Oleg Romanishin, Ukraine I met this guy once in Kuala Lumpur at the Karpov-Timman Candidates Final match in 1990. He was a really nice guy, and was one of the strongest Soviet GMs at the time. He was one of Karpov's seconds.
  8. I saw some of the game live on the internet. Fantastic endgame by both players. Great technique by Chucky. Did you see the video on chessbase on round 7? It showed Chucky desperately trying to make the time control. He almost knocked over several things on the table.
  9. felser=beast! Either that or he's the only boardmember who is employed.
  10. I enjoy poetry but haven't read much of it over the last few years. I'll take this thread as a motivation to get back into it. I've always regarded Robert Lowell as the model to follow as far as my personal work is concerned, but there are so many great poets. Also enjoy TS Eliot, Wallace Stevens, Derek Walcott, Sylvia Plath, Richard Wilbur, James Wright, Randall Jarrell, John Berryman, Delmore Schwartz, Karl Shapiro, Hart Crane, John Donne, John Milton, William Shakespeare, Alfred Tennyson, William Wordsworth, EA Poe, Walt Whitman, Homer, Larkin, plus a bunch of others I can't name from immediate memory. I respect WC Williams but don't dig him that much. I also love the world war one poets: Brooke, Sassoon, Ivor Gurney, Wilfred Owen. Beautiful stuff.
  11. Nothing unusual about the board, Moose. Divorce stats in this country are astronomical. It seems that unsundered marriages are now the exception.
  12. Glad to hear the good news.
  13. Sorry to read about the awful news, Alex. I cannot offer any advice coming from experience as I am still married. We've had our ups and downs, but we've lasted. I think you are a good guy, so don't beat yourself up over this. We've got a tough economy in this country right now, and I know it takes its toll on marriages. I really believe that financial issues have a major effect on marriage. I guess just let your wife and daughter know that you support them no matter what happens. What else can we do? Sorry, sorry, again.
  14. Moro and Chucky are both playing like they belong amonst the top five. Kramnik seems to be holding back. Anand hasn't been playing much classic chess of late. Magnus is on the rise. Things are looking very interesting indeed.
  15. Really enjoyed watching the victorious Jamaican 100m relay victory. The blew away the American world record. Tremendous achievement from my birth country--a small nation of 3 million people.
  16. Bring the three three minutes round instead of a 4 round fight where the last one involves the leader running around. Instead of only giving points with judges hitting simultaneously their buttons, why don't they take a page out of diving, take the cumulative scores and take away the biggest and smallest score. No wonder, you rarely saw guys use their freakin' jab, judges never gave points for them They also completely discount body shots. It's all about short term stuff.
  17. Hard to watch the boxing since the scoring is atrocious.
  18. Buddha collection ? There's some kind of irony in that.... It sucks to have to explain irony, but you'll have to in this case. I don't understand your comment. The irony arises from the fact that the Buddah stressed the need to eliminate desire , and a collection is nothing if not a manifestation of an extended period of single-minded desire . I saw the artistic value, and not the religious implications.
  19. Welker will have a good year but it will not match last year's number. Best late round pick of a Pat for this year will be.... Jabbar Gaffney! He'll get a lot of catches as the #3 receiver. He will get some of Welker's catches.
  20. Connnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndicknnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!
  21. I think it is the best of the Organissimo cds. Strong tunes throughout and it is difficult to pick favorites. I like both the ballads and the funky stuff. Track 3 is the weakest in my opinion, but the remainder are all strong. Some really beautiful tracks. The tune w/ the harmonica sounds like "Moanin'" at the beginning then takes off! Title track really grooves. To me there is a very mature sound to this cd, which lifts it above the other two. Glad to see you guys are still laying down some good music and are even improving your sound. I know that my reservations about track 3 will get highlighted and quoted by other posters while my full appreciation of the whole cd will be downplayed as a result, but I value this cd as a real treasure in my music collection.
