  1. I got it. Sprung for the two disc special edition which has the TCM special "Scorsese on Scorsese", which is very cool. The film itself looks great on DVD. If I remember correctly, the multichannel sound was pretty aggressive in the theater, and a bit of that seems to be lost on the DVD, but no big deal. This is a film that really rewards multiple viewings. When I watched the DVD (my third viewing overall of the film), I suddenly noticed a few parallels between Martin Sheen's character and Jesus Christ. You can't take the Catholic out of Scorsese!
  2. ghost, today was my first time listening to your program. Great job! I'll be checking out more of the archives in the near future.
  3. Its a small town!
  4. My dad lives in St. Joseph, MI, and was supposed to meet me in Chicago this evening for an event at the CSO. The sheriff of the county where he lives sent out a warning to everyone to stay off of 90 because there had been dozens of accidents and conditions were hazardous. Luckily, the majority of the snow is just south of Chicago. We've only gotten about 3 or 4 inches over the past few days. The cold and wind are nasty, though.
  5. Yeah--I used Massey's own version of it in the show. It's also on Lee Morgan's LEEWAY. I really like the version on Leeway. Massey was an excellent composer.
  6. These chairs are fantastic. Sitting in one right now. No way I'd buy myself one for personal use, but my company is very generous to its employees!

    Junior Mance

I've never heard any of his albums, but I've seen him live a few times. He's one hell of a pianist.
  8. VERY excited for this and the Jackie McLean session. So is Clubhouse prime BN Dexter? I only ask because I've never heard anyone mention this one before.
  9. He's got a point. That was cool of the Chili Peppers, even if it was just a spray painted sign.

    ECM SMOOTH 'JAZZ'

Charles Lloyd's latest one with Zakir Hussien and Eric Harland ain't European Smooth Jazz.
  11. I'm actually considering a pilgrimage to NYC to catch this....
  12. Its fine. I guess my expectatons were a bit too high given the lineup and the point in time in which it was recorded. A bit tame, but defintely not a bad session. I just can't see myself reaching for this one very often in the future.
  13. Had not heard this one before getting my RVG in the mail yesterday. What a nice session! Excellent original compositions! The playing by all is superb. I've always enjoyed Kenny's playing, particularly with Dexter Gordon, but on this session he seems to really stand out as a special, unique player. I'd never thought of him like this before. Not sure how previous issues of this one sounded, but the sound on this RVG is very warm and clear. I LOVE the way RVG captured the sound of the drums on this session. But anyways, this session is superb, and really stands out for me, particularly at a time where alot of this hard bop is beginning to sound monotonous.
  14. Saw this film this evening. It was very sad, as expected, but an excellent film. Highly recommended!
  15. I've heard wonderful things about it from people I know who have been there. I'd go if I was you!

    SOUL STATION

Wish I "got" this one, but I don't. I'm by far in the minority.
  17. Still good for 20% off!
  18. What a great flick. My parents were really cool, they took me to the theater to see it, and I was only 12. I'll never forget it.
  19. I agree with you, and probably should have phrased myself differently. I can see this film being difficult for someone who is not familiar with Lynch, or is expecting some sort of narrative cohesiveness. In a general sense, its challenging, but like yourself, I didn't find it difficult to watch at all, just because I had an idea of what to expect. Its an experience, and you either surrender to it or you don't. edit for spelling
  20. Never been to this one, but I went to a place in Mexico where we put our car in nuetral, and rolled up the mountain road. It was very strange.
  21. I saw "Inland Empire" this weekend. It was absolutely brilliant. Its without a doubt a very challenging film, and one will drive themselves crazy if they try to make too much sense of it. But if you sit back and just take it scene by scene, you'll soon realize that you are witnessing something really special. Like the article mentions above, its true that you get a strong sense that Lynch is excited and inspired by the possibilities of the digital medium as you watch the film. Its like he's on the cusp of another creative breakthrough. David Lynch is a master, and he demonstrates why he may be the best in the biz over and over again throughout the film. Nobody creates mood like him. This film is a must for fans of his work, but I would be more hesitant to recommend this to the general population, as there isn't really a plot and the film is very experimental. But its definitely one of his best films. Even if one finds it difficult to pick up on the themes he's covering here (there are many, and I would be surprised if Lynch himself was able to say what the film is "about), its worth it to just to experience his elation with the digital camera. Edit to add the fact that its a f***ing travesty that Laura Dern did not get any recognition for her performance here. It was surely the best performance by an actress that I saw in any film from 2006.
  22. Isn't She Looooooove - lyyyyyyyyy
