  1. Ortlieb's has always been a great place to go for some top notch playing. Depending on the days, there are great crowds there. The food is real good and the house band has always been slammin' (sid simmons, pno; mike boone, bass; byron landham, drums) My beef started a few months after the new owners took over. To me they don't seem to get as many NY cats, or other out of town folks to headline like they used to. Guys such as Bootsie Barnes, John Swana and Mickey Roker haven't played in a while there. They also don't publicize and advertise in the free Philly rags like they used to, however their site does give good info. I go there still, along with Chris' Cafe, right in Center City. I bring my horn to the Sunday night Jam Session at Ortliebs', formerly led by trumpeter Roger Prieto. He was recently replaced by another local cat, Ernest Stuart. I believe that's what caused the delay in getting the calendar printed and the website updated. As of now it looks to be squared away. Hey Weizen, when are you coming to Philly? I wouldn't mind cracking a beer with another board member if it won't be imposing on any plans of yours when you are here. Later, Bill
  2. Back when I was living by myself I used a couple of spice rubs for boneless chicken breast.. 1/4 tsp each garlic powder, chili powder, black pepper, oregano and a dash of salt.......kind of a Tex-Mex type deal another one I did was 1/4 tsp each of black pepper, chili powder, cumin, red pepper flakes(I call 'em "shakie" peppers! ) and top this one off with a dab of bbq sauce mixed with a couple drops of this stuff... ........
  3. I found this online editor that lets you save the images Apronus Chess Generator
  4. Queen sacrifice!! I got it! Qd2 c3 pawn x Qd2 Rd7 Mate Thank you!!
  5. Do a Google for 'Spybot Search & Destroy'(if you don't have it already) in addition to whatever virus software you have. Excellent 100% FREE program that finds a LOT of malware/spy/adware/trojans that some other utilities. don't find. Not sure what OS you have but if Windows, go to My Documents------->My Music --->itunes, see if there is a file called 'iTunes LibraryDAMAGED.itl'...in ADDITION to 'iTunes Library.itl' It might be named 'iTunes LibraryCORRUPT.itl' or something. If there is, remove 'iTunes Library.itl' (send to recycling so you can restore if this doesn't work) Rename the DAMAGED file to 'iTunes Library.itl' and that SHOULD be your former settings, playlists and such...(correct me if I'm wrong) Something like this happened to me before. Now if you lost the actual music files, you might want to try a file recovery program to see if it finds anything salvageable(sp?) Glarysoft Undelete has worked for me in the past...it is also free. These are some suggestions that may or may not apply but I hope everything works out. Bill
  6. So I got Ultimate Chess 3D on my phone a while back and have yet to be able to solve this 2 move problem. White to mate Black in 2 moves. I swear I've tried every combination 'cept for the one that works!!! Is there a solution? I figured this might be the place to get a hint
  7. Not sure if you misunderstood me; Rockbox is an operating system for audio players (see Wikipedia link for supported players). I gotcha. However, is it like iTunes, where the software needs to be installed on the computer, then the iPod, but serves a purpose by staying on the computer it was initially loaded from? Does that make sense?...cuz I think I just confused myself ....of course I could probably read a FAQ page and check it out. Once again thanks for the input! Bill
  8. Thanks to everyone for the recommendations. dBpoweamp Converter seems like a nifty piece of software. I checked the versions and looks like version 10 is totally freeware, but alas, previous versions aren't available through Download.com itself...I'll look around a bit and see if a legit copy of this version is offered elsewhere. It the meantime I'll reluctantly stick with the Foobar.....it works but damn the interface.... Heh, after filling my parents PC with 8 gigs of music and more downloads to come, my dad asked me what happens to them after I put them on my iPod...."Umm, the files stay on the computer" Response: "Why, they're on the iPod...so they're taking up space on the computer" My response: "Yes dad" ....Point of my rambling is I went out and bought a 250 gig Toshiba external HD....so I DO have space to work with for the uncompressed formats......Rockbox might be the way to go if I want to keep them....for now though until I get my own computer I want to refrain from putting more programs on this one. What I will do is try the methods described by Rockefeller and Shawn and see what works best to my ears. Any other opinions are welcome too. Thank you folks! Bill
  9. Greetings all! I have several traded albums on my computer that I'd like to put on my ipod nano. The issue is that they are in audio formats I previously never heard of, FLAC and OGG. FLAC is not compatible with itunes therefore not compatible w/ ipod through itunes. OGG can be imported and played in itunes with a small Quicktime plug-in but is still not compatible with the ipod. My questions are, what are BEST hassle-free options for converting them and to what format should I convert them. I know that I can use Foobar or Winamp for conversion. Although it doesn't have the easiest to use interface, I downloaded Foobar and it gets the job done. For OGG do I....... -import the OGG into itunes and have itunes convert it to AAC? -convert it to something else through Foobar and then import it. if I do the latter, what should I convert it to? I could do mp3-or mp4 but Foobar program recommended against that cuz it's going from one lossy format to a MORE lossy format....if this a no no then I don't want to do that. How about wav? or AIFF(whatever that is) if I convert to WAV I could burn them to CDR and then import into itunes....is that the way to go? For FLAC,...hmmm...yeah I guess the same question...what to convert them to and whether to import directly or burn to disc first and then rip into itunes that way. What should I definitely NOT do in regards to sacrificing sound quality? Thanks in advance for any hints and advice Bill
  10. Thanks to all the 'welcome backs'.. I just got back from Chris' Cafe and learned that Pat Martino will NOT in fact be playing next Sunday night for some reason. Something about him not able to play two gigs close to each other geographically within a certain amount of time. I think that was the gist I got from the general manager..Is that something common? I was looking forward to Pat, I was gonna go with my folks for dinner that night. Kurt Rosenwinkel will be that previous Friday and Saturday night so any BBer's in the Philly area should come out. Gonna hit up Ortliebs tomorrow night for another jam.. PEACE
  11. I just wanted to say hello, it's been a while since I posted and whenever I've taken a bit of time off, I always come back with a longer bit of a ramble about my goings on. I moved home to Delaware County after living right off Temple's campus for a while fighting to make ends meet. Still working for the music and arts retail company. The folks gave me a year to get some plans in place and get to the next step. It's proving to be a little harder than I've expected, but I've come a long way. I've gotten back on the trumpet again consistently for the first time in a year. I've started to sit it again on jam sessions(alright, last night was the first time in a while) It was fun cuz I was playing in front of some co workers, and my parents, whom haven't seen me perform in quite a while. I want to say I miss posting here, especially after meeting Jim, Randy, and Joe in Philly last year, along with some others Ron and Kirby. I'm going to start checking in here from time to time to see say hello and see what I can get into. I think Philly folks should think about seeing Pat Martino March 9th at Chris' Jazz Cafe on Sansom St. It's part of their Guitar Fest. I know Kurt Rosenwinkel and so other cats are going to be out for it, but I saw Pat play there in December and it was magical. Any hoos just wanted to say hi. Peace, Bill
  12. Call it sad, but I've always been a couple years behind technology. I finally experienced a Playstation II when I graduated college in 2002, and I just recently learned what an iPod is all about. Picked up an iPod Nano and am having a ball loading crap onto it. Everything from tunes I want to learn, new Conns, all kinds of stuff. Still I wonder. How can something the size of a credit card carry 1.5 + DAYS of music. Sorry, I've had a bit of wine tonight and I'm loose with the brain/thoughts/fingers.
  13. I haven't been here in a while but I figured I'd revisit and revive a topic I started when I was pondering on one of my favorite front line duos, Joe and Woody. I like the Lighthouse recording. Unity will also remain I think my favorite recording of these guys. What other pairings of Joe and Woody are there? Cape Verdean Blues comes to mind. Bg
  14. I think Garcia has a few more strengths than McNabb that are really helping the Birds. Westbrook has really stepped up to fill the hole that Deuce Staley left a few years ago. Stallworth is not too shabby.... Defense was on against the Cow-bitches.....Dallas played like crap too. Any South Jersey folks want to catch the game at Champps in Marlton Sunday night? I work till 5 and will probably check it out afterward. Happy New Year folks!! E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!
  15. From my sister, probably the best gift ever: A new DVD player to replace my PS2 that got stolen from my apt. A Mosaic Giftcard for $75...sweeet....might put that toward the Gerald Wilson set I guess I wasn't as naughty this past year as I thought
  16. Forgot to mention that I saw Louis Hayes' Cannonball Tribute Band last week @ Chris' Cafe w/ Vincent Herring on Alto Sax and Sean Jones on Trpt. Jeremy Pelt was supposed to make the gig but I believe backed out at the last moment for some reason.......Sean Jones played the hell out of that horn and so did Herring... Best $30 I ever spent Peace
  17. Managed to score a couple things over in the Broad Street Tower on my day off last week 40% off the following: Gigi Gryce/Donald Byrd Lab Band - Cecil Taylor - Newport---LP style cover Verve *looked cool and I've seen it before but never got it....Me likey! The Three Sounds - Good Deal TOCJ *never heard TTS before but I like the relaxed nature of the music Birth of Hard Bop 2 cd set Hank Mobley/Donald Byrd/Lee Morgan Savoy *NICE! At Cherry Hill, NJ location.....50% off!!! Booker Ervin TexBookTenor......THE SHIT!!!!!!! I can't emphasize that enough!!! Andrew Hill Pax .... Excellent!!! Peace
  18. Has anybody heard of this duo??? One of my staff members turned me on to them. They're of Mexican heritage but live in Dublin and play acoustic guitar like I've never seen before. They're a bit of a mix of folk, metal, rock. Check them out on youtube...you will not be disappointed!!!
  19. Jim, Joe, Randy I'm sorry I wasn't able to get out for the other gigs (heard the Tritone was out of hand) but it was great meeting you and the music is great. I wish I had picked the discs up sooner they SMOKE!!! I definitely want to catch the encores in January (after the holiday shopping craziness!) Best regards Bill
  20. I haven't heard the Yoshi's stuff 'cept on the local jazz station, but keep an eye on Derrick Hodge.....I went to school with the guy and he is crazy good. Wonderful personality too. peace
  21. I can't freakin wait! I'll be there......I'd like to meet some of you fellers too.
  22. I'm gonna check out Orrin Evans Quintet at Ortlieb's here in Philly.....anybody going?
  23. Sooooo....I have no life anymore cuz of the music store gig....with rental season coming up I'll have less of a life. Howsabout us Philly BB members plan a couple nights to catch a performance or two each month or so? We'll go, sip some beers, talk about life and hear some good music. I'll be at Ortlieb's tonight checking out Tim Warfield w/ Mickey Roker. I'm all over the Organissimo performance in October Peace Bill
  24. Thanks for the love folks....I too lurk pretty often but since I don't own a computer of my own and the hectic work schedule I don't have a whole lot of opportunity to post. Managing a music store is fun but I'm learning that in the end...it's still retail and it can be a royal pain in the arse! We're gearing up for rental season, when all the kiddies and there folks will be coming in to rent clarinets, violins and such. Care kits, music stands, luggage tags, Oh MY!
