Jesus, this is very sad. I pretty much grew up watching 'Three's Company' and had caught several episodes of his latest sitcom 'Eight Simple Rules..' He didn't even seem that old. RIP

Yeeeehaaaa!!! I had to revive this thread cuz I just picked up 'Eric Dolphy at the 5 Spot w/ Booker Little Vol. 1' This is my first exposure to the 5 Spot dates and this one absolutely KILLS. Booker Little was a MONSTER!! Kind of an unorthodox style but clean as hell ever so fluid. My first impressions of the rhythm section is that they had some great chemistry during these performances. I can really sense it in the second tune, Bee Vamp. I know, I know I need to get the box, and about 4 others but sadly, that won't happen anytime soon.

What is Hip, tell me tell me baby.......do you think you know??? I remember my senior year in HS our marching band did a Tower of Power show. What a MF that was. You'd think it'd be kind of corny but lemme tell you those arrangements were no freaking joke. It opened up with a solo trumpet trio playing the opener to "so very hard to go". I had the top voice and that just killed me.....cold weather was the worst for a part like that!! After that it went into this killer arrangement of 'What is Hip?' That was a bitch as well. The ending with the subdivided drum/band hits phukked everybody up all the time......NOT THE DOWN BEATS DAMMIT, THE UPBEATS! I can't remember the last tune but I gained a real respect for that horn line after that show. Tight as the shizznizzle. I still snag my parents' albums from time to time....they have half a dozen including 'Bump City' and 'Back to Oakland' That's the cream of the crop right there. I have yet to see them live tho.

Yeah, I'm thinking of it. I've never heard him and don't know much about him but it's his first visit to Philly since the mid 50's so I may check it out. Sounds like it should be a blast.

I'm interested as well, he'll be in Philly this Friday at Chris' Jazz Cafe on 15th & Sansom.

So, intrigued by the idea of two baritones I decided to start off with 'Dakar', taking Lon's suggestion (and anyone else who mentioned it) Very cool compositions and damn! the rhythm section swings like CRAZY. Doug Watkins has to be one of the most underrated bassists IMO. WoooHOOOO Route 4's burnin' now. pEaCe!!
