  1. I wouldn't call myself a big fan of Martin, but I enjoyed his work before he began his quest to be the king of the remakes. Martin does not do himself any favors by setting himself up for comparison with Phil Silvers, Peter Sellers, or even Spencer Tracy. He should have stuck with building his own body of work.
  2. I agree. The pacing of Study is horrible, whereas the pacing of the short stories is excellent. On the other hand, assuming I'm remembering the Hound novel correctly (it's been decades, so maybe not), he could use the longer form as well. I think you're right in that he just hadn't found his way yet.
  3. Sounds pretty dusty; even I used that plot back in a tenth grade creative writing exercise... How was this one? The commercials crack me up. Damn...I didn't know you could quote two people in one post!
  4. That's not encouraging! I'll probably move it further down the queue. Looks like my complaint (thankfully!) only applies to that one book. I was going to stick to a chronological reading, but decided to skip The Sign of Four and jump into Adventures to get to the short stories. Excellent stuff, and the added nostalgia factor this time around is a bonus as well. The only problem is, I remember what started me smoking now. I keep visiting pipe websites...
  5. Mentioning Steve Martin in a thread about Sgt. Bilko is an unpardonable offense! And that goes double for threads about Inspector Clouseau!!
  6. That was interesting; thanks for the link!
  7. Sharks vs the Avalanche, 1-0 in a shootout win. But if it's that hard for them to beat an Avalanche team that's missing half it's players, I dunno about the playoffs...
  8. Hey, buddy; the only mulligan allowed on this board is Gerry... Edward Everett Horton June Foray Paul Frees

  10. I just returned from the future in my time machine, and I have to report the bad news that no one even remembers the Beatles in 2309. Strangely enough, there is a Dave Clark Five revival going on...

  12. Yeah, I have thoughts on poverty, but I'm too embarrassed by my present situation to talk about it much. Ask me after I climb out and make it a distant memory I can look back on fondly (hah!) and we'll talk.
  13. I finally have a scorecard to keep track of this place!

  15. I didn't realize that; I just remember Bangs from Creem, although that was the seventies so "remember" might be a slight exaggeration.
  16. Joan Crawford Christina Crawford Albert J. Parkhouse
  17. I was told I couldn't read Lester Bangs anymore after my acne cleared up...

  19. I forced myself to finish A Study in Scarlet last night. What a chore, and what a bore. It didn't help that the last book I read was a Louis L'Amour novel; Doyle's description of the American West, and the people who lived there is atrocious. The idea that a westerner of that time would leave camp on a hunting trip and get lost because he wasn't watching his backtrail is something only a city dweller could come up with. And the idea of building a big, huge fire in the middle of nowhere, thereby attracting god-knows-who is absurd. Oh, well; it's the short stories I remember fondly anyway. That and the Hound of the Baskervilles. I won't give up on my revisit to Holmes yet, but this was a bad first step.

  21. Actually, since I sold most of my CDs, and don't have anything even resembling a decent stereo at the moment, this is probably just the thread for me... I wouldn't mind hearing the Hot Fives & Hot Sevens set to get me going right now.
  22. Yeah, I was thinking Susan Sarandon moaning like hell as I....well, never mind...
