  1. It's funny how often the title of "most evil dog breed" has changed in history. I was surprised when I was young to discover that my German Shepard had been the Pit Bull of it's day early in the twentieth century.
  2. One of my two favorite "Webb Universe" actresses, the other being Jill Banner (who was on the receiving end of the classic line from Webb "I'll bet your mother had a loud bark").
  3. So I should get my wish...
  4. So...is the injury of John Tavares the death knell for professional participation in Olympic hockey? Frankly, I hope so. I think it's ridiculous that the league shuts down in the middle of the season for this. I'd rather see the juniors in the Olympics.
  5. I started watching Foyle's War the other day; never saw it before. Good stuff, so far.
  6. Same here. Other than that, I'm just annoyed that the NHL shuts down for two weeks. 20 days That's it; make it worse!

  8. Charlie Chaplin Jason Priestly Frank Pastore
  9. Well, I've only seen him in three films - Capote, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and The Master - but he was pretty remarkable in all. Ironic that in the second he played a wealthy and apparently successful man who was secretly addicted to heroin. You've never seen The Big Lebowski? I thought that was required for board membership at one time...
  10. Finished Entropy, and I've got to say, I was impressed. I knew that it was nominated for a Nebula, so I looked up the list to see what beat it: Asimov with The Gods Themselves. I want a recount. (Don't take that as a knock on the Asimov; i like it.)
  11. Well, after a month, I decided to keep it. Like Netflix, if you really want to watch something, you can find something (just finished off Season 1 of Columbo this week), and being able to get a single book in two days is pretty nice. I'm actually a time traveler; I come from before the internet. If I get the urge to read a book, generally I'll still have that urge in two days.
  12. Sharks game tonight was an amazing show, though not in a way I'd have picked. Edmonton 3-0, with Ben Scrivens setting the record for most saves in a shut out with 59. Incredible.
  13. Maybe I'm getting old and crotchety, but I have a hard time thinking of football players at major football universities as "students". Let's be honest; the money (mainly big name donors) don't give a rat's ass if these people graduate, or even attend real classes. They have a rare talent level, and that talent is exploited in exchange for dubious scholarships that they don't even want. They go along because currently it's the only path to the NFL. I'll admit, my solution to all of this would be to force the NFL and NBA to get off the gravy train and provide their own minor league system.
  14. Mark Felt Joseph Cotton Serge Gainsbourg
  15. I won't be surprised if I feel the same way, if the next book I read by him is similar. However, I do have a weakness for many new wave works. Except Ellison's At the Mouse Circus. What an overrated piece of crap. But then, that's a common reaction for me to Ellison's writing...
  16. Beavis and Butthead do America is still the funniest movie I've ever seen. And yes, I'm completely embarrassed by that fact.
  17. Just out of curiosity, why not? If they figure they're getting a raw deal, why not band together (they are a team, after all) to try to rectify it?
  18. It is extremely seventies, if that makes any sense. Heavy on the metafiction, at times bordering on silly. A child of the New Wave...
  19. I totally misread that article at first. I thought "Mr. Happy" was a device he was using for his *ahem* ministrations...
  20. Interesting. I haven't read anything by Kinsella in years. I have to admit, I've kind of forgotten about him.
  21. Wish I could say yes, but this is the first book I've read by Effinger. There are a few authors that slipped through the cracks for me, and he's one. Lafferty is another. Just never seemed to spot their books.
  22. Finally reading a book I've wanted to read for almost forty years. I won't say it was worth the wait; I'd rather have found it back in the seventies, but it is enjoyable.
  23. Totally off topic, I suppose, but that's why I don't get people who like Cutler as a quarterback. Yeah, he has the tools, but you absolutely count on him to do "stupid $hit" every time things get tough.
  24. I'm sitting here listening to the SF/Seattle game on KNBR on the net, and I'm shocked. I didn't think I could miss Lon Simmons any more after moving from the Bay area, but wow. These guys stink.
  25. To borrow from the theme of another TV show... If you're wondering how he eats and breathes And other science facts, Just repeat to yourself "It's just a show, I should really just relax
