  1. Screw these Johnny-come-lately bands, Berigan; just get Tyrannies and Mutations and fire up a doob...
  2. That's an even better suggestion! Less work and more kharma points!
  3. I don't go crazy over swiss, but I have to admit, there's nothing like it for ham! You guys ever have parmesan with balsamic vinegar? I thought it sounded crazy when I heard of it, but it's like a religious experience...
  4. Exactly! Happy Birthday, Tom; hope the next year is a good one for you! Now where's that cake? I got me dancin' hooves on!
  5. Good luck, Hal! (Hey, I miss my Zippo! But not the cigarettes... )
  6. Hey, as slow as it is right now, I'll take any new post I can get! I'm down to the "which RVG is better than the JRVG or TOCJ for distance flying" thread...
  7. Well, here's where I look like a prude again, but that's pretty disgusting...
  8. It ain't mine, I swear! Mine's playing right now!
  9. The answers... Almost. Who cares? You'll forget what you payed shortly anyway. Your choice; I don't, but mine don't leave the house. Oh, yessssss!
  10. Oops! Check post #3, Nate...
  11. Berigan, damn it; this is the cheese thread, not the "cheese-like substance" thread!
  12. These two questions are very easy to answer. The answer to the first question is "disc one" (the funeral march music). The answer to the second is "I skipped disc one". I haven't gone back to the first CD yet give it another chance, although I've listened to the other three numerous times. The first one just left me cold. Seemed stiff and unengaging. The rest of the set is just great stuff. As for what to compare it to, I don't know. Is it hot jazz like Bix? Well, it's hot jazz, but I never thought of Bix as hot jazz, so we're probably using the term differently. Unfortunately, I can't compare it to the HRS set as I don't have it yet, but from the looks of the catalog write up, probably. I guess it reminds me of dixieland revival stuff except by people who "get it" as a living art rather than a museum piece, if that makes sense. Like you, I really enjoy checking out the history of the genre, and this set opened the door on an area that I've really neglected. There is one date that you should always keep in mind when asking my opinion on jazz: January 1999. That was the point when I ceased to be a "dabbler" (with probably fifteen or less jazz CDs/LPs) and fell into the abyss. In other words, I haven't been into jazz that long, and taking anything I say as an "expert opinion" would be like asking the gang on our political forum who's going to win the next election: you'll get a lot of longwinded opinion, but whether it's worth anything or not is anybody's guess...
  13. Thanks for the tip, Tjazz!
  14. She wasn't at the Church social last week. And we were really looking forward to her Mystery Bean Bake, too!
  15. Well, wesbed, I have the Atlantic New Orleans box and really enjoy it. On the other hand, I was planning on passing on the Tristano box; you can't get them all, right? Unfortunately, your thread has me rethinking my decision... Thank goodness the slow period at work seems to be over...
  16. Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat as you. Give me nice, crumbly, sharp cheddar and I'm happy. I like provolone in sandwhiches. You can keep your brie; if the smell of the cheese doesn't make me wonder if I forgot to change my socks, I'm not interested!
  17. It worked; all CDs are filed away discreetly while the other half is still at work. Except for the Von Freeman, playing at this moment... (For those who wonder, yeah, she notices the shelves getting fuller, but we have an arrangement: if I don't notice that the closet is getting more crowded, she allows the same grace for the CD shelves. )
  18. Hmm..so where the heck am I supposed to put my "Fabulous Swede-Danes" LP?
  19. Damn, Chuck; you're gonna catch for threatening the Post Office! You must have for it to get out here to California already! The only problem now is which one to listen to first...
  20. See, Brad? If you hung out on the political forum, you'd know that the trick isn't to be strong or correct, but LOUD!
  21. With my memory, I'd probably pick those up first!
  22. I tend not to get excited by them, but I also like Focus, so I guess it depends on the individual effort, just like everything else.
  23. My first thought when I saw this thread was "isn't it a bit foolish to broadcast to the world how big your CD collection is, what with theives, unscrupulous poeple, etc." Then I thought, yeah; right. Like it isn't obvious that almost everyone here has more CDs than is good for them...
  24. Well, this is little consolation right now, but just remember, every boneheaded move eBay makes gets us that much closer to the day when there will be a realistic alternative. Competition wasn't needed when eBay was effective, but obviously the day has arrived when that is no longer true.
  25. What, this isn't the party thread? Where's Tom?
