  1. Thanks for the recommendations so far! The Oppo's seem fairly priced (and upconvert as well), and I didn't know that Blu-Ray machines could play DVD's. Do all of them?
  2. Except for the title track, I think this is actually a really good album. The first three tunes — . Maybe it's because my saxophone teacher back in the 80's was into this album, but I've always thought this was a solid (not "best") effort for the 70's. Liebman in particular is having a ball. Any love for this one? The track 'Round Town is great fun.
  3. This may have come up before, but if not — I was wondering if you guys might have some recommendations for a single tray DVD player. I'm not looking for the home theater experience (surround sound, etc.), but rather a reliable player to watch some of the Jazz Icons DVDs. Maybe all DVD players are roughly the same these days, but I'm guessing not. Anyway, I appreciate any recs!

    Jazz In Paris

Does anyone here have the Jean-Claude Fohrenbach 2-disc Jazz in Paris set? I'm listening to it right now. Disc 2 has some really interesting use of overdubbed tenors — as well as tenor keys clicking to sound like a percussion ensemble.
  5. Has Sam Most's Debut album been reissued in full? I'm guessing Lonely Hill would be the first to do it.

    Bird

Of course — he used to squeak on his reed sometimes. (All you have to do is read that Kenny G interview. Sheez.)

  8. Wasn't "Leo" reissued without overdubbing as part of the CD Interstellar Space? I like the overdubs, by the way.

    :Oej;lk ;lk lkeosjloe!
  10. Has this happened yet? I figured it would be a Y2K sort of thing.
  11. And I'm listening to David's show right now. Nice. There's got to be a way to hear the Abodeely stuff without buying the Fresh Sound package. (Probably is; I just don't know it.)
  12. Is the attached only available on vinyl?
  13. If anyone has any original covers of Andre Hodeir on Vega or Vogue, please post!
  14. HECK YEAH.
  15. The two sessions mentioned above are only separated by three months (August and November, 1956). They're both much stronger than Pepper's Discovery sessions, in my opinion. The + Eleven session is even stronger, I think. Just listened to it today. Art's tenor ... I wish he'd played more of it. (Clarinet's good too.) The K2 of this is super fine. McLovin.

    John R.T. Davies

    Probably. Yes.
  17. That Transition LP ("Lucky Strikes!") is actually a sort of second edition. It's the first American edition, but the original edition is on the French Swing label, as LDM 30.039, with the title "& Gerard Dave Pochonet All Stars." (Cover attached.) This makes things more confusing, because Thompson recorded another album with Pochonet in 1956 with a similar title (and that one is in the Jazz in Paris series). At any rate, the title in question was also on CD in the first run of Vogue/BMG discs in 1995. It's paired with a very fine Gigi Gryce session, and can be had cheaply here. Highly recommended.

    CD-Rs

I always purchase Taiyo Yudens here. Good price, free shipping, reliable vendor.
  19. Yes, you're right. Here's the original cover.

    Rare Blue Notes

Hiroshi still has a sealed copy of this ask we speak.
  21. Her first album on Verve, still one of my favorites, was in heavy rotation here all last week. One thing about Dearie that really strikes me, but that wasn't apparent for a long time — listen to the way she comps under her own singing. It's almost as if, at times, singer and pianist are two different people. Very hard not to lay down a chord when you emphasize certain words. Subtle mastery.
  22. Remember Joe Christmas? He operates Bagatellen, and is currently running a contest, with free music for the winner. He asked me if I could let the O-board know about it, and I hope that's OK. I know many readers here occasionally visit that board. Note: It'll help if you have knowledge of physics and philosophy. (I have no idea what the answer to the question is.)

    Tony Scott

Listening to In Hi-Fi, on Brunswick, right now. One of Scott's very best from the 50's.
