That "We Have All the Time In the World" thing for On Her Majesty's Secret Service? God, I HOPE that wasn't his last studio recording. That would be sad. The liner notes to the original soundtrack (reissued on disc) claim that this was indeed Pops' last recording in the studio. I listened to that track last night. It is kind of sad, but there's also something eerily attractive about it. Oh that Robert Barry!

I don't know if this is an easy question or not (and I'm not 100% sure that I know the answer), but — Without checking, what was Louis Armstrong's last studio recording? :rsmile: :rsmile: :bwallace2:

I just realized ... maybe these guys weren't recorded using microphones at all. I told you I was a novice!

When Charley Patton or Blind Lemon Jefferson or (fill in name of favorite early blues artist) first recorded, what kind of microphone(s) were used at the time? And were these artists simply recorded in offices? If anyone here could talk about this to a novice (myself), or point to a book that provides information along these lines, I'd be much appreciative. Thanks!

The actual price is 3990¥, which is approximately $40.89 (U.S.) — plus whatever shipping charges come with it. It'll be interesting to see what Dusty Groove charges for it (if they stock it). I'm guessing something like $45.99. I've had the music for a long time now. Must resist Japanese packaging fetishism! (At that price, it's actually not too hard to resist.) I know the conversion rates. $45 is more than I've spent in the last 3 months on CDs. I'll probably stick with my OJC copy. Right — wasn't meaning to instruct. Just talkin' to the board. I'm in the same boat.

Those of you who receive Hiroshi Tanno's e-mails on Japanese reissues and releases already know this, but Flanagan's Overseas sessions are being reissued once again — this time with the most deluxe treatment I've ever seen from the Japanese market: not one, but three mini-LP covers to accompany the CD. The reason for three? To be faithful to the original release of these recordings as EPs on the Swedish Metronome label, DIW is manufacturing three separate jackets. Now, if they really wanted to be faithful, they could have reissued the music on three 3" CDs! The original covers are indeed classy: The price tag is hefty — over 3900¥. If someone here decides to splurge, please tells us how all of this packaged! (Um, and you can tell us about the music too. It's one of my favorite Flanagan dates.)

Instead of starting a new thread, any suggestions for a television to go with a new DVD player? Any suggestions are welcome, but my actual budget is limited. I can probably afford a DVD player now, and will have to save for a new television. I've had a 13" RCA for over fifteen years now.

Thanks for the recommendations so far! The Oppo's seem fairly priced (and upconvert as well), and I didn't know that Blu-Ray machines could play DVD's. Do all of them?

Except for the title track, I think this is actually a really good album. The first three tunes — . Maybe it's because my saxophone teacher back in the 80's was into this album, but I've always thought this was a solid (not "best") effort for the 70's. Liebman in particular is having a ball. Any love for this one? The track 'Round Town is great fun.

This may have come up before, but if not — I was wondering if you guys might have some recommendations for a single tray DVD player. I'm not looking for the home theater experience (surround sound, etc.), but rather a reliable player to watch some of the Jazz Icons DVDs. Maybe all DVD players are roughly the same these days, but I'm guessing not. Anyway, I appreciate any recs!

Does anyone here have the Jean-Claude Fohrenbach 2-disc Jazz in Paris set? I'm listening to it right now. Disc 2 has some really interesting use of overdubbed tenors — as well as tenor keys clicking to sound like a percussion ensemble.
-
Has Sam Most's Debut album been reissued in full? I'm guessing Lonely Hill would be the first to do it.
-
Of course — he used to squeak on his reed sometimes. (All you have to do is read that Kenny G interview. Sheez.)
-
Wasn't "Leo" reissued without overdubbing as part of the CD Interstellar Space? I like the overdubs, by the way.
-
Has this happened yet? I figured it would be a Y2K sort of thing.

"The Best Tenor You Never Heard: JR Monterose"

And I'm listening to David's show right now. Nice. There's got to be a way to hear the Abodeely stuff without buying the Fresh Sound package. (Probably is; I just don't know it.) -

If anyone has any original covers of Andre Hodeir on Vega or Vogue, please post!

The two sessions mentioned above are only separated by three months (August and November, 1956). They're both much stronger than Pepper's Discovery sessions, in my opinion. The + Eleven session is even stronger, I think. Just listened to it today. Art's tenor ... I wish he'd played more of it. (Clarinet's good too.) The K2 of this is super fine. McLovin.

That Transition LP ("Lucky Strikes!") is actually a sort of second edition. It's the first American edition, but the original edition is on the French Swing label, as LDM 30.039, with the title "& Gerard Dave Pochonet All Stars." (Cover attached.) This makes things more confusing, because Thompson recorded another album with Pochonet in 1956 with a similar title (and that one is in the Jazz in Paris series). At any rate, the title in question was also on CD in the first run of Vogue/BMG discs in 1995. It's paired with a very fine Gigi Gryce session, and can be had cheaply here. Highly recommended.
