  1. See this thread,
  2. I’m not sure of when they begin to throw breaking balls. On Sunday mornings on WFAN in NY there’s a program with Rick Woolf where all issues regarding high school (and below) sports are discussed and this issue gets brought up from time to time. As far as offensive theories go, players seem to be taught to go for the HR. The approach they take at 0-2 seems to be the same when it’s 2-0. I think they lowered the mound after the 68 season when they lowered the ERAs and BAs. 68 was the year Gibson had a 1.12 ERA.
  3. Here’s Calypso. Dave Holland has a three minute solo around the 5:55 mark that is fabulous.
  4. This came from the Mossic Gazzette:
  5. I finished listening to the Antibes session and I can’t say Clarence Palmer is my favorite organist but I also recognize that the music is supposed to be funkier. However, what I found odd is that Grant Green doesn’t get as much solo space as you’d expect. These seem more like Bartee’s or Palmer’s session than Grant’s.
  6. I think it’s the year round, the traveling teams and all that. Moreover, they’re throwing a lot of breaking pitches. By the time they get to pro ball, teams treat pitchers’ arms like the Mona Lisa. I’ve heard Leo Mazzone (former Braves pitching coach) say that pitchers need to throw more.
  7. Bleak indeed. I couldn't claim to be an inveterate watcher of his show. If something grabbed my interest like his shows in Vietnam, I'd watch. I thought one of his funniest spots was his appearance in The Big Short, where he explained collateralized debt obligations in cooking terms. As Mjazzg said, no problems are the same and I wouldn't try to guess at them.
  8. That seems a little strong for someone who obviously had problems he couldn’t cope with.
  9. Indeed. Guess we’ll see him in September 2019 or more likely 2020.
  10. I picked Funk in France up on Friday and listened to the Paris sessions and some of the Antibes. My preference (from what I’ve heard so far) is the Paris session. It’s closer to the GG from a few years earlier. Don Lamond does sound a bit peculiar as noted by CJ and others. On the Antibes session, the organ sounds different to me, maybe because it’s an M-3 and not a B-3 (not that I’m a musician) or maybe it’s just how the session was recorded and sounds. I have to listen some more.
  11. Disc 1 (just received).
  12. That would be a major blow for the Angels. My son is an Angels fan and we watch the games together.
  13. I come here to escape the constant drumbeat of news about that fool. Let's not pollute this place with his name or photos.
  14. RIP. A very interesting life. Thanks for the link.
  15. 90? I feel freakin’ old.
  16. If Tanaka hurt his hamstrings running from 3B, he’s clearly not in shape. The fans are calling in today complaining about it, which is predictable and you really can’t blame them for being upset. However, teams play a lot of inter league games these days and pitchers need to be in shape.
  17. The length doesn’t matter. The players the Warriors have are just better. I picked the Warriors to win in 5 but a sweep is not a surprise. Even if the Cavs had won in game 1, the Warriors would still have won.
  18. Jazz Wax had an interesting article earlier this week about Dallas Jazz, including Ann Richards. See Dallas Jazz Circa 1960
  19. He's not a number one but a pretty darn good two or three. This season he's posted uncharacteristic numbers though and with his injury, who knows. One thing, however. Shutting him down for the playoffs probably saved his career, unlike the way the Mets dealt with Harvey.
  20. Received the Shearing. Very well packaged. Thank you.
