sickening penn state football allegations
Brad replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
With the NCAA and all these athletic programs, at least in the major sports, it's all about money. Did you see all those college presidents jumping that conference or this conference just for the cash? Borders on disgust. -
Happy birthday, Son-of-a-Weizen!

Belated birthday. Hope it was a good one! -
sickening penn state football allegations

Completely agree with Dan on this one. It's not like he saw someone stealing some ipods or breaking into players' lockers. He witnessed a heinous crime. Plus, who knows how long Sandusky had been doing this as he was at Penn State from the 70s I believe. The only thing that Paterno, in my opinion, thought about was protecting the brand and probably thought he could keep a lid on it. It exploded in his face and justifiably so. His legacy at Penn State has become a farce, a puddle of shame. -
In today's game of mediocre pitching, you can never have enough runs. Although stealing with a big lead was frowned upon years ago, today's baseball mores have changed.

Dial, for the reasons set forth in this thread, plus thecfact that they were the first Bird I listened to and did it for hours on end.

Well, rather typical for Goodspeak.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Brad replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
HRS Sessions, disc 2. -
I hope the Phillies choke on it. Why? What can you have against them?

Goodspeak, I've heard that Giants were interested in Reyes, who is with the Mets, not Nationals. He is one of the top leadoff hitters today. Triples for him are routine and it's a thrill to watch him get them. Normally hits near 300 although this year won the batting title with around 344. Very strong arm. Generally stays healthy but did have trouble with his hammies this year. Will draw a lot of attention. Mets are unlikely to sign him. He's not just an east coast player but one of the top ss in baseball. Surprised you don't know who he is. Assume you've heard of Derek Jeter. In case you haven't he's a ss with the Yankees and going to HOF

Well, I guess it wasn't meant to be. Feel bad for Ron Washington. So close but .... Sorry Jim

I agree that if you get wrapped up in it too much it's not healthy. Back in 1988, I thought the Mets were the best team that year. They should have gone all the way. Anyway, they're up 2-1 against the Dodgers and blow game 4 in the ninth inning. I went to that game and when I got home I couldn't sleep for the next two days. I was that upset. After it was all over and they lost (still a bitter pill to this day), I came to the realization that I had been too wrapped up in it and took a step back. I still yell at the TV and all that and get excited when they win but not like I was back in 1988. It's only a game

We are fans and we live and die with our teams. It's not supposed to be therapeutic. The joys of winning and the lows of losing drive that out. It's like being a manic depressive. I'm reminded of the comment about football by the great Liverpool manager Bill Shankly: 'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.' Thus, forget therapy. Didn't George Allen say something like you die a little bit each time you lose?

I don't think there's any doubt about it. What this game had in common with game 6 of 1986 and 1975 was that the game was fairly oridnary until the last few innings, and, boy, were those some innings. We know the Cards and the crowd will be sky high but what do they have left in the tank. How will Texas react. The closest point of comparison is game 6 of 1986. There the Red Sox, loser of game 6, in the worst way you can imagine until now, reacted well. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but couldn't hold it. Who knows if it will wind up the same way and if Texas lose how they will react in 2012. Probably won't know that answer for a while.

Until tonight, and I've been watching baseball for about 50 years, the best WS games or at least the best game sixes were Game 6 of the 1986 Series and the 75 Series (in that order, by the way). However, last night blows them out of the water (although I will always have a sentimental spot for the 1986 Series). This game will be talked about for many a year, e.g., what if Holliday doesn't get picked off (as they loaded the bases after that and what they heck was he doing that far from the bag) and why is Cruz doing his best Dave Kingman imitiation. A simply unbelievable game. However, if the Cards don't go out and win this tonight, it won't carry as much weight in history. Except for the 75 Series, the games we remember are where the winner ultimately prevailed, e.g. the Gibson Home Run. BTW, here's the top 10 games, as rated by MLB Network, not all WS games. 1975 Fisk game 1991 Twins beat Braves (a great one for sure) 1986 Game 6 Mets Sox 1992 NLCS Braves beat Pirates 1986 Mets beat Astros in Game 6 (another game 6!) 2003 ALCS Boone beats Red Sox 2003 NLCS Bartman game (is he still in hiding) 1986 ALCS Red Sox beat Angels 2001 Dbacks beat Yankees in game 7 1888 Gibson beats As (would have rated this number 4)

Nice review in Rifftides (thanks for the link). Received it yesterday and great stuff. -
Think I have some of the Paris material on a Sony CD but the sound is not very good.

Man, there's so many things going on this thread and they don't all involve this reissue!

Boswell Sisters Box set? Is this something I want?
Brad replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ditto. Waaaaaaaaaaay out of my comfort zone but sorry to hear that the box wasn't well done for those who wanted it. -
Burn Brigade is outstanding as is Baritone Madness. Of course, Pepper is my favorite bari player

Although I'm late to this party, I'm tending to feel the same way as Jim. Something doesn't feel quite right. It is obviously all subjective but just because it's legal doesn't make it right. The Mobley seems to be the most egregious example that I've seen so far.

Mosaic to release next Jazz Icons DVD set
Brad replied to jazzbo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Unfortunately single DVDs are not available and to be honest I'd rather have it in a CD, not DVD set. -
Anyone else here bought some CDs that you haven't listened to yet?
Brad replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The people who aren't guilty of this must be a very small list indeed
