I think George's tirade and alleged dumping of Torre was just a way to deflect the attention from the Mets and keep the Yankees on the back pages. If so, it worked, didn't it? And you know that it must be killing him that the Mets are moving on and the Yankees going home. Can you imagine his reaction if the Mets make it to the Series, which they're likely to do? In New York sports, one team is usually up and the other down and we may be beginning to see a transition. These things are cyclical and the Yankee boom may be running into the bust cycle. After all, the Yankees are stuck with some big contracts right now and, unless they're just willing to cut people and pick up the cost, next year could be more of the same.

I bought a remaindered copy of Balliett's Collected Works: A Journal of Jazz and read almost all of it (skimmed in places). The guy hates hard bop, and constantly throws in such digs at the genre. I don't feel confident enough to say "fallible," but his tastes are sufficiently different from mine (I listen to lots of hard bop, for instance) that I wouldn't go by his recommendations. I wonder if he still feels the same lo these many years later.

Now that I look at the number again, looks like Ron is probably right. Fire drill over .

Allen, I don't always read every thread that's on this board. If someone voluntarily comes on here asks for advice that's different than making public something that could be (I didn't say should) handled privately.

Yanow isn't in the category of a Larry Kart or any number of high-minded, "serious" critics/reviewers. He does yeoman's work, as he himself described it earlier: and on those terms he does a pretty decent job. Amen to that. When I got started AMG was crucial for me and I still consult it. I don't always agree but it's a good reference guide (not perfect, but what is?).

Jesus Christ! Reading this is unbelievable. This was a private matter that should have been left private and dealt that way, rather than a public display. Whether or not Scott is correct or not, after he was challenged, he had no choice to respond. That doesn't change the fact that the whole matter should have been dealt privately.
