i think you got the title wrong. the correct title is booker little in new york, april 1960. i don't believe this is a live date at all. it's a poor copy of a studio recording issued on the time label that includes these two sessions: Booker Little Quartet Booker Little (tp) Tommy Flanagan (p) Scott LaFaro (b) Roy Haynes (d) NYC, April 13, 1960 Opening Statement Time M 52011 Minor Sweet - The Grand Valse - Who Can I Turn To? - * Booker Little (Time M 52011, S 2011) Booker Little Quartet Booker Little (tp) Wynton Kelly (p) Scott LaFaro (b) Roy Haynes (d) NYC, April 15, 1960 Bee Tee's Minor Plea Time M 52011 Life's a Little Blue - * Booker Little (Time M 52011, S 2011)

Teddy Charles Jazz in the Garden at the Museum of Modern Art
robviti replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
Stardust is not included on the Fresh Sound cd. It does appear on Lone Hill's Booker Little Featuring Booker Ervin - New York Session and Collectables' Sounds of the Inner City . If I'm not mistaken. some earlier reisssues of this material, possibly released on the TCB label, edited out Teddy Charles' solos, for some strange reason. -

I have a framed copy of the Blue Note Records RVG Reissue Poster. It's signed "To Rob, Rudy Van Gelder." -
I may see them at Chicago's Hot House on April 1st. That is, unless it's a hoax.

Randy Weston Mosaic Select running low?
robviti replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
the name "liston" has norman origins. one family's website claims there are in excess of 8,000 listons in the world today. btw, melba was from kansas city, sonny from arkansas. -
i love watching those early episodes of the andy griffith show. knotts was essential to the show's success, and it's easy to overlook his comic talents. i feel sorry for younger folks who only remember him from three's company. thanks for the laughter. rest in peace, barney.

'Sesame Street' lyricist Bruce Hart dies at 68 February 24, 2006, 5:57 PM EST NEW YORK (AP) _ Bruce Hart, best known for his "Sesame Street" lyrics and the song "Free to Be ... You and Me," has died. He was 68. Hart died Tuesday at his Manhattan home of lung cancer, according to his wife, Carole Hart. The couple wrote for the PBS television children's show after its debut in 1969. While creating dramatic sketches, Bruce Hart also wrote the "Sesame Street" theme lyrics and music with Joe Raposo and Jon Stone. After one season of "Sesame Street," Hart and his wife produced an album and television special called "Free to Be ... You and Me" with Marlo Thomas, starring Mel Brooks, Harry Belafonte and Michael Jackson. Bruce Hart also worked for the TV show "Candid Camera" and wrote the lyrics for the Cass Elliott hit "One Way Ticket." He and his wife produced the Emmy-winning NBC series for adolescents "Hot Hero Sandwich," and a series of educational films about psychology. Hart is also survived by his brother, Alan Hart, of Akron, Ohio. Copyright 2006 Newsday Inc.

That's a question for your ears to answer. i can't tell any difference. then why are you wasting your money? better to buy new music by new artists, or at least recordings by artists you don't already own. that's what i'm doing.

i wonder what this live recording from 1968 sounds like:
-
imo, this description also fits medeski's solo show at chicago symphony hall last fall: cheap and obvious. after two tunes, i couldn't stand any more so i chilled out in the spacious lobby until his set ended.

it's funny, but in searching the board, the name nathan davis most often comes up when someone is looking for one of his recordings. there's rarely been any discussion of the man, his history, his current projects, etc. i'm the happy owner of the saba/mps twofer, but i've been unsuccessful in finding his later titles on cd. here's a link to his website: nathandavisjazz.com also, here's a link to a recording you might like: stablemates. davis recorded a few times in the 90's with an all-star group that called themselves "roots." two of their recordings (stablemates and saying something) can sometimes be found in the used bins. btw, if the all music guide is to be believed, davis went through some dramatic changes in the late 90's. he was transformed into a young, white guitar player: amg here's the real thing

i thought i'd give folks here a heads up on the start of a three-week sale at american digital on cd and dvd storage, including jewel cases and containers for bulk media. each of the three weeks will feature different items. this week, it's cd cases (time to get those double jewel cases!). Next week it's dvd storage. the third week is "alternate storage." here's the link: american digital

Why do so many people hate Lonehill and other imports?

not to mention malcolm x's "by any means necessary." -
i've just got to chime in on this three coins issue. i'm not especially fond of this track. but for me, it's the arrangement, not the song. imo, three coins is a wonderful, heart-felt ballad with a strong melody. just listen to sinatra's 1953 classic recording for capitol. mobley's snappy tempo misses the boat, reducing the emotional impact of the song. i would love to hear some big, smoky tenor do justice to this ballad. maybe i should write houston person and start a save the three coins campaign!

the same group also recorded a tribute to tony bennett. check out the sound clips on amadie's website at jazzcorner: jimmyamadie.com

in addition to faulty towers and the blackadder series, i own the second season of the dick van dyke show. not exactly sure what the appeal is, though.

preservation of an artist's musical heritage? that sounds like without the lonehills of the world, this music will be lost forever. that isn't the case. it continues to exist. it's just difficult to access it. let's face it - some of us believe we have a right to own this music, whether it's by legal means or not. -
mark introduced me to willie this past fall, literally! he's got two new recordings coming out on the southport label: WILLIE PICKENS - JazzSpirit Volume 1 & Volume 2 Southport pianist/composer and arranger Willie Pickens will release a two volume set, "JazzSpirit," with new arrangements for quartet and duo of religious music, Co-Produced by Hyde Park Union Church with segments taped for two 9' Grand's at U of C's Mandel Hall, featuring Willie with his pianist daughter, Bethany Pickens. Other musicians on the CD's feature Pat Mallinger, Tito Carillo, Ari Brown, Robert Shy, Kobie Watkins, Rob Amster, Larry Gray and Marlene Rosenberg. This collection grew out of a sacred jazz concert series at Hyde Park Union Church, on Chicago's South Side.

i don't know what to tell you. the super 8 in times square was only $109 a night (plus taxes) when i last visited at the end of february. the price is around $159 for the weekend you mentioned. that just doesn't seem fair. the best way to say money might be to stay in queens or new jersey. the super 8 in north bergen has many rooms for only $65-75, and it's only a 10-15 minute ride to the port authority bus terminal at 8th and 41st. check out the reviews at tripadvisor.com
