cd storage for large collections
robviti replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Snarf (noun): The actual visit that you make to a historical landmark or historical marker. Snarfing (verb): To roam around towns and countryside, looking for the abovementioned items. okay, i'm officially, totally confused. it's a good time to go to work! -

your's look interesting. i wonder how they compare structurally to the can-ams. i didn't see any details on the website you linked. also, they don't offer counter tops to go with their cabinets, do they? i do hope they sell divider kits. -

how can you criticize a religion that successfully cured tom of his homosexuality? -
well then, you're hearing it from me. on record, and especially live, i hear rollins' influence in lovano's phrasing and the way he approaches standards. of course, i also hear the mark of coleman hawkins (maybe more so than ben webster), who had a considerable influence on sonny.

If you're planning to go to the Museum of Natural History on the west side, you might want to stop by NYCD at 173 West 81st Street (between Amsterdam & Columbus). Not a huge store, but I usually manage to find a few items in their used jazz section. Here's a link: NYCD. Afterward, go over to Brother Jimmy's if you like BBQ (and cute waitresses). Here's another link: Brother Jimmy's. Have fun in the City!

i enjoy lovano's work very much, but i'm not sure if i totally agree with this statement. can you name some musicians who you feel bear the mark of lovano's influence?

i'll make this quick because i have to run off to work. i have a family history of back problems. also, one of my clinical specialties is managing chronic pain. ten years ago i had an accident and for the next year i did it all - chiropractor, physical therapy, accupuncture, pain management program - until it became almost impossible to sit or walk. i ended up having surgery and luckily, it saved me. my recommendations are these: go to you pcp and get a referral to see an orthopedic surgeon. don't let the name scare you. they're not cut-happy and they do the best job of assessing and diagnosing you back problems. most likely, you'll be reffered for phsyical therapy where they'll teach you what to do and what not to do to strenthen your back and avoid re-injury. if you're overweight, get rid off the excess baggage - it's a frequent source of back strain and pain. if you really care about your back, you'll make stretching and strengthening exercises a part of your daily morning routine. you've only got one back, and if you don't take care of it, you'll be in for a heap o' trouble for the rest of your life. good luck.

well, i finally remembered to call the jazz standard to see what's up. the person on the other end of the phone told me they just received a list of bookings for july. however, she said the schedule probably won't be posted on their website until all of the dates have been finalized. that being said, i did find out that the cannonball legacy band, led by louis hayes and featuring vincent herring, will be performing the weekend of 7/22-24. btw, i read somewhere that the people who ran the upover jazz cafe in brooklyn might be looking for a new, street-level location to reopen the club. i hope that's true. if anybody hears anymore about this, please let me know.

i saw this item this morning and i thought i'd pass it along for anyone who might be interested in reading it. Maria Schneider wins 4 jazz awards, while circumventing record stores By CHARLES J. GANS ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK, June 15 — Maria Schneider took a big risk last year when she released her orchestral jazz album, ''Concert in the Garden,'' exclusively through her own Web site in partnership with ArtistShare, a new Internet-based music delivery service. But her gamble in bypassing the traditional record label-distributor-retail store chain has paid off big time. Schneider received the album of the year title Tuesday as well as being chosen the top composer, arranger and large ensemble leader at the ninth annual Jazz Awards. Her triumphs followed her success earlier this year when ''Concert in the Garden'' won the Grammy for best large jazz ensemble album — the first recording ever to receive a Grammy without being distributed in record stores. ''It's unbelievable. It's been such a nice year,'' said Schneider, who joked that she felt ''greedy'' taking home four awards. ''I'm so glad I live in New York. There's so many amazing musicians and I can't believe I am part of this.'' Veteran Dave Holland was honored twice as musician of the year and as the top acoustic bassist in the voting conducted among the 450 members of the Jazz Journalists Association. The only other multiple winner was 30-year-old Jason Moran who was voted the top pianist while his trio won for best small ensemble. While recognizing emerging young jazz stars such as Moran and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt (who was named up-and-coming artist of the year) the JJA also paid homage to a trio of octogenarians: 86-year-old pianist Hank Jones for lifetime achievement, 83-year-old Frank Wess (flutist of the year) and 84-year old Clark Terry (trumpeter of the year). Terry, who beat out such strong younger contenders as Wynton Marsalis, Dave Douglas and Nicholas Payton, likened himself to a boxing legend who finally won his first world title at age 39 in 1952 and held on to it for 10 more years. ''All I can say is that I feel like Archie Moore did when he won the championship and said, 'I'm just going to stay around here until I get one,'' said Terry, drawing laughs from the audience of several hundred at B.B. King's Blues Club and Grill. Other winners included Brazilian Luciana Souza, who is prominently featured on Schneider's ''Concert'' album, as female vocalist of the year, Andy Bey (male vocalist), Jerry Gonzalez (Latin jazz album — ''Y Los Piratas del Flamenco''), Roswell Rudd (trombonist), Joe Lovano (tenor saxophonist), Phil Woods (alto saxophonist), Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophonist), Don Byron (clarinetist), Jim Hall (guitarist), Regina Carter (strings player), Stefon Harris (mallets player) and Roy Haynes (drummer). In the Jazz Journalism categories, the lifetime achievement award went to former Boston Globe critic Bob Blumenthal, while Dan Morgenstern's ''Living With Jazz'' was chosen the year's best book about jazz. The awards ceremony, hosted by actor Robert Wisdom of HBO's ''The Wire'' series and taped for broadcast at a later date by the cable channel BETJazz, also included a solo drum performance by Jack DeJohnette and pianist-arranger Sy Johnson presenting his ''75th Birthday Suite for Octet.'' Singer Nnenna Freelon previewed selections from her upcoming Billie Holiday tribute album ''Blueprint of a Lady — Sketches of Billie Holiday,'' including a stirring rendition of the anti-lynching song ''Strange Fruit,'' made even more fitting because it came a day after the U.S. Senate voted to apologize for its past failure to enact legislation against lynching. ———— On the Net: www.jazzhouse.org © 2005 Associated Press.

i think michael is trying to be helpful and respectful in response to your inquiry. i agree with him that you might very well like this band given the kind of music you've expressed a fondness for in the past.

I am planning a trip to the City in July, so I started checking out the websites of my favorite jazz clubs. The Jazz Standard's site usually features the current and next month's schedules, but currently it only has one for June. Clicking on the ticket web link, I see there are no shows listed for the club beyond July 3rd. Does anyone have information about the Standard's offerings after this date? If not, I might give them a call this weekend. The barbecue might be overrated, but I've really enjoyed the shows I've seen there. And while we're on the subject, what happened to the Upover Jazz Cafe in Brooklyn? Since last summer, their website hasn't listed any acts other than Vincent Herring on Mondays and their Tuesday night vocal jam session with Enos Payne. Does anyone have the inside scoop on this intimate nightspot? Are they still open other nights?

I've been thinking of attending this free concert series for several years now. This might be the year I make it. I thought I'd share the proposed lineup with the rest of you. frankly, i'm confused by your comment. i see the jpeg for illuminations there, and here it is pasted from the site:

ms. peyroux was the guest on an npr radio show last week. quite a few callers, most of them older jazz fans, commented on how much she sounded like lady day. she was noticeably quiet during these calls, and never once did she admit to being heavily influenced by holiday. i think that's what bothers me about her. the debt is obvious, and to not acknowledge it seems disingenuous, if not disrespectful.

yes, i believe they are.

there's no questioning that baker was talented. however, i fail to see how someone who was so famous, so well-paid, could be considered "underrated."

I just thought I'd pass along this sale on my favorite cdr blanks from my favorite seller. Buy three 50 packs of Klone 80 Min cdr at their regular price ($19.96) and get a fourth 50 pack free. Actually, the 200 blanks will be shipped as two 100 spindles. Here's a link for more details: klone sale

alfred, can you tell me if hall uses any electronic attachments/gimmicks (i.e, phase shifter/flanger, distortion, etc.) on this date, as he has been prone to do in recent years? thanks.

two of the individual recordings from this set are currently available: a third - Live at the Village Vanguard - will be reissued june 7th. it's prime big band material, but i wouldn't pay $300-400 for the mosaic set.
