  1. i thought i'd bump this up since the dates are coming up very soon. anyone else going besides mark and me? could there be a mini o-hang in the making?
  2. as long as i still have my billie holiday recordings, i really don't care where maddy is.
  3. i own this two-disc set. it's a digital 20bit k2 remaster from japan in a fold-out cardboard sleeve. it's great!
  4. after seeing this thread, i thought to myself: "better late then never. maybe i should join now." after reviewing my want list and browsing through the jazz section, i remembered why i never joined in the first place - their selection sucks! of course, this is a totally subjective view based solely on my particular wants/needs. i'm sure others have found some great discs. but there's no vincent herring, frank rosolino, roland hanna, leroy vinnegar, or jeremy pelt. and only one title each for giants like sonny stitt and art pepper, and only two or three for the likes of jackie mclean, andrew hill, and clifford brown. like bmg, it looks like this just ain't the place for me.
  5. to be fair, the festival's website proclaims: "Five full days of open air music featuring rock, funk, blues, world, soul, R&B, reggae & more daily." makes you wonder why they include the word "jazz" in their title. it sure ain't for sales purposes!
  6. i don't know if i'd call a predicted high of 88 "brutally hot," but it could be uncomfortable. fort adams is on the water, so hopefully you'll feel the benefit of an ocean breeze. enjoy the music!
  7. i'll be there on sunday. so will steve schwartz and a lot of nice people from the boston area, thanks to wgbh, our local public radio station. they've arranged to take a bus load of jazz fans from boston and rhode island to the festival. heck, they even feed them! as long as the weather holds up, it should be a great time!
  8. actually, i like some of the songs in their original form, for what they are. "well-executed"? probably. but for me, anka is the executioner who completely kills these tunes. and yeah, he is an arrogant sob.
  9. i don't know, guys. aren't you all being a bit disrespectful? i mean, we are talking about a guy who gave us this classic piece of liberal feminism that was a #1 hit in 1974:
  10. The other day I was listening to an interview with Paul Anka on NPR's Fresh Air. He's in the limelight again because of a new release called Rock Swings. It was a case of "truth is stranger than fiction" for me as I listened to samples of his Vegas-style swing arrangements of several pop chestnuts from the 80s and 90s. I'm not kidding. They include songs like Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit, Survivor's Eye of the Tiger, Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun, and Van Halen's Jump. Now some people are raving about this disc, but to my ears it brought back memories of Ella's "creaming" of Sunshine of Your Love and Sinatra's "better left 'til tomorrow" cover of Yesterday. You gotta hear it to believe it, if you dare! Rock Swings
  11. now on to something more positive. i saw frank morgan saturday night at the unitarian universalist church in marblehead, ma. he was backed by hilton ruiz, curtis lundy, and yuron israel. my summary: great artists giving an excellent show in a place with a wonderful vibe, all put on by an organization that really loves jazz. next weekend, it's the newport jazz festival!
  12. you missed my point. i would have gladly paid the full admission price (or even more) for a full set. they refused to tell me when the set would end, telling me they wouldn't be charging me anything if there were only 15 minutes left. later, they tried to do exactly that. i've enjoyed myself at fat cat in the past, but i'm not eager to go there again. no offense luke.

some of the tracks feature burrell and blakey, while others feature mcfadden and bailey. there are no tracks that feature both guitarists or both drummers.

  17. you're not alone. i see this cd quite frequently in the used bins at different stores.
  18. during this past weekend when i was in nyc, i caught the louis hayes cannonball legacy band featuring vincent herring, joe magnarelli, and anthony wonsey. as i expected, this is a very tight outfit that created some very upbeat, soulful music that harkens back to a magical band that i never had the fortune to see live. i also had the opportunity to see jimmy greene at the vanguard. joining jimmy was stefon harris, playing a new set of vibes from yamaha that adds four extra metal bars at the lower end. i joked with him that he should get paid extra every time he uses one of those added bars! again, it was a great night of jazz, made even more special by the fact that jimmy's family was there to cheer him on. after the vanguard gig i wandered over to fat cat to see peter bernstein. it was quite late (around 1am) and they still wanted to charge me full admission, even though they couldn't tell me how much longer peter would be performing. they eventually let me in with the stipulation that i could pay them something after the show "if i thought it was worth it." believe me, i wasn't trying to get in for free. it was just that they wouldn't tell me how much i'd be getting for my money. well, i managed to sit down in time for the last three songs (about 15 minutes). afterward, they tried to hit me up for $10. i gave them $5, and left with a good feeling about the music, but a loss of respect for the establishment.
  19. i saw mccoy in may. he most certainly did not "shuffle off" like an "old man."
  20. $31.50 with free shipping in the u.s. from barnes & noble.
  21. i saw this also. unfortunately, i won't make it to the city until friday.
  22. i think it might be jim cuomo.
  23. That's Klemperer. "Jaaazzmooose!" I mean "Hooogannn!"
  24. i'll be in the city on this weekend and have selected a few shows i want to attend: Jazz Standard – Cannonball Legacy Band Village Vanguard – Jimmy Greene Smoke – Javon Jackson Smalls – Fri-Sat, 10 pm - Matt Shulman; Sat.: 8 pm - Ned Goold; 1:30am - William Ash Kitano – John Stetch Trio anyone here planning to attend any of these shows? anything else going on this weekend that i should consider?
