  1. shane, you're right of course. the reaction on which you commented was not related to berigan's initial post. that would have been harsh and unnecessary. what i was responding to was a guy who has gone out of his way to find the most outrageous and provocative stories to post on this board, someone who has been more interested in creating hysterics than engaging in meaningful dialog with others. in my initial response, i tried to point out his errors (worthless warranty, the amount of time a lot of us wait for repairs, his backup recorder), then i admittedly added a sting at the end for someone who has long made a habit of doing so to others. am i supposed to separate berigan, the political provocateur, from berigan, the guy who imo is acting like an entitled cry baby? oh, and one more thing. berigan, i think it's admirable that you're helping a friend suffering from ALS. i have no doubt that it as rewarding as it is difficult for you and everyone involved. however, i don't see how your friend's terrible disease has any bearing on your problem, or any place in your defense against my criticism of your dilemma. shane, pap, et al - i have no problem in dropping it at this point. i think i responded honestly, if somewhat forcefully, to someone who has shown a lot less respect and understanding to other members of this board than i did here.
  2. Are talking 4-6 weeks for some component that you ordered online and had to mail back??? 4-6 weeks is a long time, for a 30 minute repair(Most likely) in my book. If I have one or two players doesn't matter, I would be without a dvd player in my bedroom..... I have a friend staying with me who has ALS, and he is often asleep or in "his" room with the door closed, so I can't record in there when I want to. I could take the recorder out of there, but then he couldn't play a movie if he wanted to. The store LIED to me, they just wanted the quick 40 bucks, the salesman wanted to get his cut, and made it sound like I wouldn't have any issues if I had a problem. And you don't know me at all, I don't raise hell to get my way.... you're right, i don't know you personally. but from your many posts, i believe that you are someone who is prone to make outrageous claims, someone who argues viewpoints that have little or no basis in fact, and someone who is loathe to take personal responsibility for his mistakes. oh yeah, and from this post i gather you're something of a... face it, there's a lot worse things in life than having to do without a 2nd dvd recorder for a few weeks.
  3. 1) your extended warranty isn't worthless. it's going to get your recorder fixed. 2) 4-6 weeks isn't a long time for warranty repairs performed out-of-house. i've waited an average of 4 weeks for in-house non-warranty work on components in the past. 3) you say you have two of these recorders, right? so you won't be without a player for any amount of time. 4) should you raise a stink? no. the store is living up to it's responsibility, and is even honoring the warranty without requiring proper paperwork. 5) will you raise a stink and demand a new player? my guess is yes.
  4. not necessarily "bad," but it does seem unfair to reward those who don't follow a rule that you set. btw, i like the post->pm idea. it gives other members a heads-up on what's probably gone and what remains, and also saves you the trouble of having to update your original post every time someone contacts you. i was just disappointed to miss out and wanted to let off a little steam. anyway, how could i stay mad at someone who uses the great clifford thornton as a handle.
  5. so much for the "post first, then PM" policy. if i'd known the discs i wanted were already sold, i wouldn't have taken the time to listen to clips, post a reply, send a PM, etc.
  6. interested in: Sean Conly – Re:Action – (Clean Feed) w/ Ak Laff, Malaby, Attias $6 Joe Fiedler Trio – The Crab – (Clean Feed) trombone/bass/drums freebop, nice $6
  7. Prefer all you want , but unless you're prepared to argue for the assumptions underlying that preference , don't think for a second that such a preference is morally privileged simply in virtue of whatever emotional appeal it may have . The umbrage you ostensibly take with this constituent’s disputation is eclipsed by the excessively complex nature of your composed rejoinder.
  8. the old farmer's almanac predicts that new england will get less-than-average precipitation this winter and enjoy higher-than-average temperatures from mid-december to mid-february. i don't know have much faith in long-term forecasts, but i don't have the heart to tell that to these nice folks.
  9. i took the time to check out amg. here are some possibilities: Velvetta Velvet F**k Eat Velvet Velvet Ant Velvet Ego Velvet Flu Velvet Rut Velvethead Velvet Claw of course, my favorite is...
  10. that would be his "solution for jazz loft" but seriously folks, this product and variations like it are easily found on the internet for 10-40 cents each. made of plastic or foam, they've been used to affix cds to printed literature for years. just google "cd-dvd adhesive-backed hubs." the trick is to find a place that doesn't have prohibitive shipping costs, or to combine your purchase in an order with other items.
  11. it would be nice if some dedicated and knowledgeable individuals revised the titles of many of these photos by identifying the individual jazz musicians featured. imo, the caption "jazz players" seems somewhat disrespectful, as well as inadequate.
  12. Over time, she has sold a lot of jazz CDs. i'm sure that's true. i just was noting the irony of her current sale list. that, and the fact that she responded to a question saying "very best, sue."
  13. i think it's funny that the seller's ebay store name is MY SUPERB MODERN JAZZ CD COLLECTION. he currently has 78 items for auction, but only 3 of them are jazz cds.

  15. while we're on the subject, you know that song? i forgot the title, but it goes "dada dee, da da dada da." you know the one, the guy that sings it used to play with whatchamacallit. you know, the group that was really big in the nineties. they had that hit covering that tune by what's his name. anyway, i heard that song by the guy who used to play with that band that had that nineties hit on the radio yesterday. you know the song i'm talking about?
  16. this thread prompted me to listen to some of my favorite beck songs of yore. although i can readily identify with the flashy fusion style (it was, after all, a signature of my heyday as a guitarist), i think beck's real strength is his simpler, blues-drenched style of soloing and comping. he's great backing up a singer (tasteful fills) and still moves me with his instrumental ballads, much more so than the funky pyrotechnics.
  17. an extremely talented musician with a markedly flawed personality, imo. beck was my "guitar god" when i was a teenager, and vastly superior to jimmy page et. al i thought. the trouble i have with most of his music over the last 20 years or so is that he seems to be stuck in the fusion-ethic of the 70s, most notably in the instrumentation and the emphasis on technique over emotion of bandmates. i think he's best when he's contributing to other people's work, a context that apparently helps keeps his inflated ego in check. i still consider the first jeff beck group album with rod stewart to be one of the greatest recordings of all time, and i would love to see him perform and record more soulful music with a less flashy band that would complement the beauty and warmth of his guitar playing.
  18. uh, huh. well, consider this headline: Thursday, November 13, 2008 WASHINGTON NEWS Paulson's Bailout: A "$700 Billion Switcheroo"? if this poor woman is an idiot, what does that make us?
  19. probably something like: "pick me up a box of padron anniversary 1964 exclusivo maduro."
  20. your poem is eerily meaningful to me. get this: 1) "ziti" is a nickname i had 25 years ago. 2) recently, my favorite cigar store disappointed me, selling me several dry stogies. 3) at several bucks a pop, i feel ripped off, i.e. "this ziti was burned." 3) tonight, i'm going to a bigger, better cigar store run by the same people. 4) the name of both stores is "watch city cigar." 5) the location of the bigger store is framingham, ma goldie, you are obviously in possession of some serious magical powers!
  21. agreed i hope larry didn't consider the rhymes to be name-calling, because i don't. until the rhymes are rescued, how about: "Hey, here comes Allen Lowe. Tall, distinguished, but such a schmo."
