  1. dlover, the sooner you admit defeat, the sooner we can all go out and have a beer together.
  2. who dat? of course, they could have used photoshop.
  3. limited yes, but not a connoisseur. it was part of the collector's choice series released around 1990. rather than being remastered and reissued, odyssey and other titles in the cc series were reprints of the initial release, except that the discs were white and blue rather than silver and blue.
  4. right or wrong, whenever i hear a motown hit these days, i think of a bunch of middle-aged white folks dancing together, none of whom have any discernible sense of rhythm.
  5. fyi, we don't openly share, trade, or sell copyrighted materials on this board. and we certainly don't do business with romulans.
  6. well, now i've seen everything. a pez-dispenser for cds!
  7. For some stupid reason, we Americans can't download these reissues. I don't get it, but that's what it says when I try to order this. I've tried on a few sites with no luck! it's called payback, you insolent colonist. stick that in your cap and call it macaroni.
  8. unbranded taiyo yudens have a barely noticeable blue tint to them, so i have my doubts that "deep coloring" is a factor one needs to be concerned with. in fact, i read somewhere that some manufacturers added extra dye to their media to disguise the fact that they were using less stable formulas of cyanine. tricky bastards.
  9. if you haven't done so already, you may want to check out some of our previous threads about cd-rs, since subjects like taiyo yuden, unbranded cd-rs, american digital, have all been discussed before. i've had very good results with ty's myself, and although i like american-digital, their prices aren't that great anymore. if you buy a cakebox of 100 unbranded ty from them, you'll end up spending 36 cents a piece when you factor in the shipping fee. runtechmedia sells the same thing for $27 with free shipping (27 cents each). other online vendors like supermediastore also offer ty at this lower price. these days i'm using light scribe cd-rs made by verbatim, 'cause i'm such a freakin' creative genius that i have to make artwork for the damn blanks too.
  10. wow! that's ----> o | +-) | *| $-- ^ | =~=~=~ !!!!! and i mean that sincerely!
  11. btw, here's a peak at what may be my next piece of body art, a combination of two jim flora designs:
  12. what's "non-traditional" about a practice that is at least 5,000 years old? if you mean that tattoos are "unconventional" or "beyond the norm," consider this: a harris poll in 2003 revealed that 16% of people in the united states have at least one tattoo. at the same time, jazz records account for less than 2 percent of all cd sales. so i ask you, who is engaging in non-traditional behavior, people who get tattoos or people who buy jazz? of course, this means i'm a total freak because i do both.
  13. i was doing a search of the board and came across this old thread. i don't know how i missed it, except maybe for the fact that it apparently garnered very little interest among board members. anyway, i thought i'd mention the fact that i have the black saint records logo tattooed on my back. i am soooo cool.
  14. read the article. it notes that she's pregnant. fine. it also tells you what her due date is. yeah, okay. it even gives a description of what she was wearing. enough already. regardless of how talented MIA might be (catchy name, btw), i think an article in the Music section of the NY Times that devotes that much space to such unimportant details and fails to mention a single jazz artist that won an award this year deserves to be criticized. I know the Grammys have little regard for jazz, but the Times too?
  15. Michael, let me add my congratulations to you for winning a Grammy. Regrettably, the NY Times online article fails to mention this achievement, choosing instead to focus on pregnant rappers, famous no-shows, and other drivel. All in all, it's a good time to be an old codger who doesn't really give a shit about awards.
  16. With all due respect to Wikipedia, I don't know if the adjective "experimental" is the best way to describe OTB to the unitiated. Think "creative," "exciting," and "well-conceived" and you'll have a better idea of what this outfit was about. When one considers that Gunther Sculler's son George and John LaPorta started the band, the connection to Mingus is obvious. And as AMG points out, the band's name comes from Charles' song "Orange (Was the Color of Her Dress, ) Then (Silk) Blue." Although Howard Johnson did appear on the band's third recording "Funkalero," that album was a feature for former Mingus sideman George Adams. Over the span of more than 15 years, OTB's arrangements of familiar jazz repertoire were often quite inventive, and their original compositions frequently contained elements of musics from different cultures, a characteristic they share with another Boston-based outfit, Either/Orchestra. A short list of some of the many fine musicians who played with OTB includes trumpeters Dave Douglas, Dave Ballou, and Tim Hagans; reedmen Andrew D'Angelo, George Garzone, Chris Speed, and Allan Chase; trombonist Gary Valente, and pianist Bruce Barth. Less known stalwarts of the band were trombonist Peter Cerelli, a former bandmate of mine, and bassist Paul DelNero, a close childhood friend who teaches at Berklee and gigs regularly in the area. OTB's five recordings on Schulller's GM label are well worth looking for, imo.
