  1. now there's a thread i'd like to read, if we could include a few jazz bands too. decades ago when i was still performing, we'd sometimes announce the name of the band before a break, choosing something we thought was oh-so clever. among my favorites were chuck roast and his prime cuts and mortimer snerd and the milquetoast orchestra, featuring the dulcet tones of miss claire voyant.
  2. btw newbie, welcome to the board. it would be nice if you could take the time to price the individual cds and give us an idea of what you're charging for shipping and what methods of payment you prefer. otherwise, some people might not bother to respond, thinking that you might say $12 to anyone who expresses interest in a disc, or that you might quote different prices to different members. just a few suggestions.
  3. It's a compilation of tracks from several albums released on the Enja label. It was issued with the Italian magazine MUSICA JAZZ (no. 10/97). I believe the tracks originally appeared on What It Is, Up Popped The Devil, Art Of The Duo, Hard Talk, Moods, and One-Upmanship.
  4. i guess i didn't read your reply close enough, mg. i was aware that blackhawk had released ekaya on lp, but i didn't realize you owned a cd reissue. the lp-listed timings may indeed be off. all i know is that this is my favorite ibrahim recording, and it would be nice to see it widely available on cd.
  5. Star keyboardist Merl Saunders dies Saturday, October 25, 2008 Joel Selvin, San Francisco Chronicle 16:44 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Keyboardist Merl Saunders, the gentle lion of the San Francisco music scene best known as co-captain of guitarist Jerry Garcia's solo excursions outside the Grateful Dead, died Friday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center after fighting infections. The 74-year-old musician suffered a debilitating stroke 6 1/2 years ago and, although he lost the ability to speak, he made numerous sentimental guest appearances at shows over those years playing with one hand. "I never met anybody so happy who had a stroke," said Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. "In the end, the only thing that lit him up was the music. Sometimes he'd cry, but I've never seen anybody so happy in the realm of music." story here Merl Saunders obit

  7. i know it's not the point, but "high on fire" is a stupid name.
  8. i just got back to my hotel after seeing anthony braxton with karl berger, followed by john zorn, and ending things with steven bernstein's millenium territory band. excellent music all around, especially zorn, who played with pianist sylvie courvoisier. last night i thoroughly enjoyed a set by a quartet led by john mcneil and bill mchenry at the iridium, and the night before it was bobby hutcherson at dizzy's. i love new york.
  9. a very happy birthday to you, chris! your present is on it's way...
  10. one of my favorite claxton photographs: and here's a photo from 2006 of claxton and his wife, 60's model peggy moffet: thank you, sir, for the images and the memories they evoke.
  11. thank you, pharaoh of the rotating speaker.
  12. care to revise the title to indicate that this is a local michigan sale? i mean, geez, talk about making an out-of-town guy drool unnecessarily.
  13. i just bought my ticket, third row and center. i've wanted to see braxton for some time, and i've never seen zorn, bernstein or berger live either. woo-hoo!
  14. i haven't heard a lot of tori's work, but i really like little earthquakes. allen, you lovable old
  15. i really don't see the point in harassing mosaic on this. he asked, they said no. if the booklet was so important, then the buyer should have insisted on it being included in the first place. "pushing back," getting Michael involved, or doing other things to make mosaic "cave in" smacks of entitlement to me, especially when we're talking about a company that has more than earned earned our respect over the years.
  16. que pasa everybody! today i got some bad news. it appears that i'm going to die from heart failure after a night of mixing pain killers and hard liquor. this is a particularly interesting way to meet my maker since i recently became the director of behavioral medicine at (drum roll) a chronc pain clinic! anyway, in keeping with the month of october's association with halloween and all things dark and icky, feel free to click on the link provided to discover how you will shed your mortal coil. and of course, share the results! death psychic
  17. ASV Records is a record label in the UK that was owned by The Sanctuary Group. I think the label might have been sacked when Universal bought Sanctuary in 2007. JSP Records is another UK label started up in 1978. Most of their releases have been jazz and blues recordings in the public domain. FWIW, I don't consider either of these labels to be illegitimate or, at the very least, in the same category as the Andorrans. Their releases typically feature new (and often quite good) remasters of very old material. JSP's box set of Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives & Sevens is a good example. The Andorrans, on the other hand, tend to steal other people's remasters and sell their reissues in the U.S., violating that country's copyright laws. IMO, the only gray area is in our conscience. Do I buy something that violates existing laws in my country, or not? It's up to the individual to decide. Some of us choose to disregard this consideration and instead base our decision solely on our own personal needs.
  18. i'm thoroughly confused at this point. there seem to be two or three different books being discussed here or displayed on the amazon website. there's the original hardcover 1000 jazz covers that began this thread. there's what appears to be a paperback version of that original book that's scheduled to be released at the beginning of november. and then there's a book a lot of people are discussing entitled jazz covers that is on sale now (released in july). trouble is, i'm seeing listings for 1000 jazz covers that use the cover for jazz covers. can someone take the time to help an old man work through this mishmash?
  19. unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about the police- and veterans-related calls. don't know that they're really "scams," but instead charities that some of us choose not to support. the other type of calls are indeed illegal scams. i get these auto-dialed intrusions at the same time everyday for a week or two, then they stop. i never answer them because once you do, the computer that's dialing randomly identifies your number as a real entity. i'm guessing this information is then passed on to telemarketing companies who check the number against the no-call list. if it's not listed, then they'll descend on you like a flock of buzzards. p.s. my apologies to all the real buzzards out there, who at least wait until you're dead to start picking at your carcass.
