What was the book of conversations with Mingus in the early 70s and related commentary? Seems I remember something about a Mingus big band (not a jazz orchestra!) that was working club dates...was that to prep for the & Friends concert or just something that was happening anyway? Would Joe Chambers have been doing that gig, or was he just there for the recording at the concert? Yeah, this book: An excellent read, I thought.

Had some coworkers who had to evacuate last night. Now they're evacuating Malibu. Thoughts and prayers and general positive mental energies being sent.

What the difference between a jazz big band and jazz orchestra?

That ice cream is nailed. -
I bought Tattoo You for Sonny Rollins. It's the only Stones record I've ever bought. Everything else I could hear on the radio often enough. Scratch that being the only record, it's the only LP. I did buy a 45 of "Miss You" when it was a hit. It had a picture sleeve and I figured hell, collectability. They're a seminal band and I like a lot of their stuff a whole lot, but things like that, I usually don't buy records on. oh, I do have a holographic cover of their Satanic Majesty's that I found - seriously and literally - on a NYC street one night in 1980. The vinyl itself sounded like it came off a NYC street, but hey - holographic cover!

Exactly. But you don't have to do that, you can just get ice cream. But you gotta clarify that you just want ice cream. If they stay in business, it will be in spite of their concept, not because of it. Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe all these young people with all their late-nite munchies have created a new thing and this is the future of ice cream shops. As long as I can keep rockin' it old-school with those absolutely splendid waffle cones and good straight-up ice cream, hey, live and let live. But if you gonna make me add some Trix or some Frosted Flakes to it, hey, you can have my ice cream when you pry it from my cold, dead, sticky hands. Although, if worse comes to worse, I'd be willing to give Cap'n Crunch a shot. But not Lucky Charms, oh HELL no, not Lucky Charms. -
Ok, looking at the overall physical presentation, I am feeling the love. If this is what happened to create the unfortunate situation with the stray track, some more I of the hurricane Sue, ok, all is forgiven. Just remember that possibility going forth, ok? Ok, this one catches fire. I still miss Dannie, but oh well. Stubblefield is interesting to hear here, he's very often George Coleman-ish...until he's not. And almost literal "transition" from Bobby Jones to George Adams. And Pullen...holy shit. Nothing there to really evaluate, imo. "planned events", both. I see no reason to think that it wouldn't have worked well though. But I'd still miss Dannie. Mingus without Dannie is kinda like Ellington without Hodges. Nothing wrong, plenty right, but still, objectively, missed. But am I remembering right, did Mingus actually have a big band active in NYC for at least a little while at the time? Was Chambers in that as well?

To mix ice cream with breakfast cereal. Seriously. See for yourself: https://www.milkytreats.com/ Don't get me wrong, they have great ice cream. and they're literally just up the street and around the corner. And they make waffle cones from scratch, right there. The smell is damn near evangelical in it's puissance. We go there. But, jeez, lead with the ice cream and then tickle with the concept. Ice cream. -
I'm sure that they played "Caledonia" about fifty bajillion times faster than the original.

I hear Bud Spangler saying something along the lines of Don Pullen, who you might remember from some really great expe4imental music with Milford Graves...I read something similar a time or two in down beat revues at the time. Did that record get heard as much as it sounds like it might have, and how?

time flies when you're having fun!

How long until you reach 78? years, not RPMs....

Sidney Bechet kicked all they asses! And although not my wheelhouse, are y'all too young to remember Todd Rundgren? And Roy Wood, here his name comes again, is it time for a rediscovery?

You can make 4 sound like a lot of other things, especially if you displace the accents or phrases. A lot of times it's just easier to wite it in 4, if you wote the displacements as bars unto themselves, it would look all crazy and people might be shy. But everybody can read 4, at least up to a point. So if you got a phrase in 5 followed by one in 3, just write it in two bars of 4, that's still 8 beats, and people don't have to worry about "meter changes".

Prince was a trip, for sure.

7/10 or 4/6? Dude, you are more metrically imaginative than Don Ellis! Here's how the online geek community breaks it down: https://www.onlinedrummer.com/drum-beats/when-doves-cry-prince/ And for real, no snarkiness intended, when a person reaches retirement age and still has a healthy musical appetite/interest, there's far bigger wastes of time than to take some kind of Fundamentals of Music class.

Excellent!

The Atlantic version?

Like James Brown like to put it, "on the one".

And I'll tell you what's pretentious becoming obnoxious - "Concept". There's a new ice cream joint opened up around the corner from us, and they got great ice cream, but they think it's a good idea to promote their "concept" to the point of having the menu board not giving pricing for basic cone/dip structures. THAT'S on a little tiny board off to the side. We've gone there twice, it's good ice cream, but each time, it inevitably went like this - family walks in with kids, parents look at the main ordering board with some degree of bewildered WTF?ness, counter help senses their bewilderment (but not their WTF?ness), steps up to the counter all proud and shit and then proclaims, "Let me explain our concept!!!!" Dude - it's fucking ice cream store. Don't lead with cereal, jeezus. Take care of the ice cream and the "concept" will take care of itself. -

"Count Basie and his Jazz Orchestra" would have been pretty redundant. I also noticed that it's called "The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, which is all about branding marketing. Now, we did have the "National Jazz Ensemble" under the direction of Chuck Israels, but that never really got off the ground. Who cares about an "ensemble" anyway? I do see that there is something called the "National Youth Jazz Orchestra", which should probably apply hyphenation because I'll be damned if I can confidently glean what those four words in that particular order really mean. "Big Band" has a pretty fixed meaning these days. It's something that would they ever come back and then they sorta did and now you can find them pretty much anywhere there's enough players, without enough gigs, to form one. "Jazz Orchestra" is....not going to be that. There you go. -

Oh, I see. You're vocabulary-shaming on behalf of your local vocabulary police. Charming! I don't think Angela would do something like that, but she's leaving, right? Is this what's coming next? -
Definitely 4/4. I can see where some questioning of the symmetry might arise though, as the 7th & 8th bars of each verse can play tricks on the ear, the 8th disrupting the established symmetry of phrase/pause for a continuous phrase that has kind of a "looping back" effect. I figured this out on a 14 hour road trip, btw. The song had just come out on the radio and it was in very heavy rotation on damn near every non-country non-NPR station all the way. Unlike Kevin, I never questioned the meter. But like him, I was wondering hey, wtf? is going on here. So I started counting bars. Nothing odd there either. So waht's left to create some kind of temporal distortion/disorientation? Phrase lengths/structures. And, sure enough, that was what was doing it. There for a moment, I felt like Alec Wilder. Then I farted and had to roll the window down. So much for that!

I knew that you could.

I still don't get it. It's a word that has that meaning, and I used it with that meaning. I don't see how that's "showing off" or anything. It's somewhat common usage in my world. I think your conceit is silly.
