What the difference between a jazz big band and jazz orchestra?
JSngry replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't understand the question. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/conceit 1a(1) : a result of mental activity : thought (2) : individual opinion b : favorable opinion especially : excessive appreciation of one's own worth or virtue … the landlord's conceit of his own superior knowledge … — Adam Smith 2 : a fancy item or trifle Conceits were fancy desserts, made either of sugar … or pastry.— Francie Owen 3a : a fanciful idea b : an elaborate or strained metaphor The poem abounds in metaphysical conceits. c : use or presence of such conceits in poetry d : an organizing theme or concept … found his conceit for the film early …— Peter Wilkinson … the historian's conceit that the past is forever prologue …— Leon V. Dig me now. Later might not ever get here.

Yeah, I had the Pullen/Byard parallel running too. Pullen is outstanding here (there, and everywhere).

I don't mind Brooks, either. But I still miss Dannie. Nothing against Brooks. But I spend so long listening to so much Mingus=Dannie=Mingus that no matter how good anything else feels, I'll still miss Dannie. It's not rational, it's personal.
-
He does indeed, but I still miss Dannie, It's Mingus.
-
Just now cracking it open and digging in. I miss Dannie. Nothing against Roy Brooks, not at all. But I always miss Dannie when he's not there. Stubblefield, though, is a gas!

Marketing and expectations. If you go to hear a "big band", you're probably expecting a program of swinging standards and blues and originals, nothing else. If you go to hear a "jazz orchestra", you're probably expecting less emphasis on standards, more original material, and an engagement with different compositional conceits that just 4/4 swing. But, really, the same players can and do usually play both gigs without blinking. So it's really about marketing the image to who the target audience is going to be. -
It means being out on all the different file-sharing sites, Mediafire and the like. This happens anyway, but there's added incentive now for somebody to go get the whole thing to get all the tracks rather than making that one extra cut available to people who buy the physical copy, Not a question of "stopping" anything, just a question of why would you handle your product like this, to not stop the bleeding, to not even applying direct pressure, or whatever it is that you use to stop bleeding.

Marketing, essentially. -
mmmm....

So what happens if you got a buddy who buys the DL version, gets the extra track, and then forwards the whole rip of the LP to you b/c, you know, you gonna buy shit anyway, and then all of a sudden, there the WHOLE product is, potentially being released in/to the wild, what kind of business practice is it that lets that happen?

You might well have loved them live. I think I saw them 6 times, the first in 1974 when they were touring behind Mysterious Traveler, the last in 1984. It was always an adventure, the good kind. Even when the Jaco antics got weird, Wayne would project his royal Wayne-ness into the mix and that was that. Adventure - not just elation, but adventure - at a jazz gig. Those were the days!

I'm down with that archival release if/when it happens.
-
That's a damn good record, imo.
-
I'm thinking it also made for a good display in the record stores. Somebody at Atlantic liked that idea once in a while. Remember the records with the paintings of the artist, Tonight At Noon, etc.? That was another series they did.
-
I suspect it was a series. Another such thing:

Sorry, the last Youtube update broke the extension and I will need to reload this page for this download to work correctly. This is a quick hack FIX and next update preety soon will not do this. Huh? Ok, I bought the thing legit and now this? Wouldn't mind if there was a DL code that had come with it, but this seems just a bit..not sneaky, just...not ready for prime time.

I wonder if him and Barney Wilen ever got together. This is my first time hearing of Denise McLuggage, sorry to say. What an interesting life! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denise_McCluggage Looks like that book is not common! https://www.amazon.com/Brooks-Broad-Leaping-Selections-Autoweek/dp/0964230909/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1541445090&sr=8-2&keywords=Denise+McCluggage I wonder if she laughed at this one:

He did a Cadence interview somewhere, maybe later, in the 90s, that was very coherent. He talked about enrolling in a jazz education program in a university somewhere, you know, to get up to speed with all the modern thoughts and stuff, skill improvement, etc. and he said that all the kids thought that he didn't have even half a clue about how to play jazz, and that he didn't have even half a clue about what they were teaching the kids about how to play jazz. I quite literally LOL'ed at that one.
