Artist's Lack of Fashion Sense Interfering with the Music
JSngry replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Artists
Depending on where you’re going, plenty of people. -
It was Dizzy's own enterprise. The catalog (some or all, not sure) went to Savoy at some point. No idea if this is complete, but here's a start: https://www.discogs.com/label/187018-Dee-Gee

Reallly? In what way?

either way, it's a testament to Coltrane's devotion to the instrument.

wow, Birks worked!

The one bad acid trip I had, I tried all kinds of music to get me out of it and the only thing that worked, finally, was "All I Want To Do" from Sunflower. Go figure that.
-
Maybe he was playing "Cabinessence" and "I Went To Sleep" instead? I mean, yeah, that's the shit, but back in the day...not so much. "Do It Again", I remember that being an AM hit, I was in my earliest teens then, didn't think too much about it until years later I decided to check out those unpopular last 4 BB albums (remember the WB 2-Fers of them?)...check out the timbre of the piano/keyboards on that one, it ain't the basic sound you think it is.
-
Fortunately, I did most of my listening to them in the days when the hifistereosystem had a mono switch. To this day, "Kitty" is one of my alltimefavorite Duke cuts. Seriously.
-
As the 70s The World Of Duke Ellington sets showed, Duke did a fair amount of singles and other one-offs for Columbia that never made it onto an "official" LP.
-
and still playing the Don't Talk To Me About Standards, You Did The Four Freshmen Set, Don't Deny It card...post-Roulette Basie Verve. It's the jazz purist's nightmare set, but hey, gonna play that card. If Mosiac won't do it, who is it, Hippo Select? should.

"Summer In The City", "Dancing In The Streets", Northern urbanity, quite the contrast to West Coast (endless) summers. And then, the Beach Music of the Southeast.. Americans love them some summer, but I'm betting for that transitioning to full frontal terror as the 21st Century unfolds.

I'm wanting to say I have the Everest Ebony on CD, but for I can remember, it might be a burn of the LP...

No reason to doubt that she's on her way out...it will be sad in so many ways, but thankfully I was paying attention since 1967. How could you not? She's an imprint for me.

Meditating on a Riff

Sonny took it to a different level, though, going so far as to move to India to study. I think he later said that he doubted if he would continue as a player and the only other way he could think of to support him was to become a Yogi. So I think there's an interesting story there, because sure, a lot of people think about giving up playing, and a lot of people do, and some people go ff to retreats somewhere and come back an open book stores and stuff, and ok, Charles Lloyd went all in with the TM thing, but can you imagine, Sonny Rollins...not afraid of manual labor, already took one time off to hone his craft to a pretty amazingly detailed perfection, going through all that crazy 60s Sonny Rollins stuff, and then looking inside decide to give it all up? Sure, I can believe that, but to decide to go to India and study because, hey, I'm gonna need some kind of gig....wow. Not too many people are going to decide that. I'd also like to hear his thoughts on his time with the Rosicrucian thing. Still haven't gotten a true handle on what that's all about. Used to see back-paged magazine adds for them when I was a kid, then heard it linked to the Illuminati, then the Knights Templar, just ALL kinds of crazy shit, and I've been thinking, since I first heard that he was into it for a while (cf Joe Goldberg), wow, all this AND Sonny Rollins too? -
There's also a few things for Everest, you get Tito Puente, Charlie Byrd, Nat Adderley, I don't know who else. None are really essential, none really suck either. Oh yeah, Everest also has the remake of Ebony Concerto, which some people prefer over the original. I don't think Mosaic has ever ventured anywhere near Everest territory though. But still and all - Bill Barron. Needs to happen.
-
Not sure about that, but add in the Select and there's probably just a very few gaps in there for, like, 25-ish or so years. Can't say this set will be an immediate priority for me, but it looks like there's gonna be Bill Perkins aplenty, so I hope to not miss it entirely.

Haven't heard of it until now. Amazon only has it on Kindle and not yet available. Love the cover photo, though. Mohawk, meditation, and wristwatch. -

Kudu had the best Esther Phillips records ever made, imo.

I certainty know the name Dave Usher! How old is he now? I get the principle of most common practice making the final rules, but, really, "Birk's" is not logical, that was not his name, nore was it his nickname. In both cases it was "Birks". Here's Verve, then and later. If "works" is going to be a noun, then it will be " Birks' ". But Verve wants it to also be a verb" "Birks Works" no additional punctuation needed, no different that "Sam works" but HERE'S also Verve: Let's look at historical context - what would you say to the then-commonish complaints about Dizzy's "descent" into commercialism? Hey, Dizzy got the gigs, y'all don't. Y'all hungry, Birks WORKS! As far as TV shows, I'll take Burke's Law. But that's not in play here, correct?
-
Here lies the original, correct? If that's really it, then "works" is a verb, not a noun. Either that or it should be Birks'. John Birks Gillespie was his name, right? So there's no "Birk" to be had, it's Birks. Still, did anybody think about it that much when they made the record?

So now Mosaic has done Woody Herman complete up to the end of the Phillips/?Columbia period, only not quite, correct? Wasn't there a one-off for Atlantic, a llive thing? Yeah Monterryrey. What other gaps would there be before, oh yeah, Everest. What else? Never paid attention to that Atlantic thing, but this doesn't suck. But Bill Chase on trombone? Really?!?!?!?!
