FWIW, the slowness here generally lasts between 1-2 hours. Users who experience longer - or shorter -delays might be experencing server maintainence issues somewhere other in the chian than that of the board's own server. What you can do, if you have the free time and the inclination, is to call your ISP during a lag and have them trace the signal from your computer to the board's server. Of if you're a true geek, run the test yourself. This is not a "professional" opinion by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that different durations of the lag are being reported from different locations would certainly appear to suggest that there is more than one variable in the mix. -

Sorry, but "if you don't like it, then don't listen" is not a realistic approach for anybody who does listening /studying on anything other than a recreational basis. Granz liked predictability, pretty sure that's the case. Hell, most people like predictability, it's just a matter of degree. When I turn the spigot, I want water to come out. When it doesn't, it's a problem. When I hire a drummer, I expect him to show up and play the tunes that are called. If he doesn't that's a problem. But if he plays all the same things on every gig, then I get to decide if that is too much predictability for me and/or if the predictability is of a comforting or an irritating nature. That's really all it is, how much of what kind of predictability are you as an individual comfortable with. People who don't like ANY kind of predictability usually end up being locked up, either for their own protection, or for the protection of others. And people who insist on All Predictable All The Time risk getting to the same point. But in between, it's all different, but it's also all good. -

Oscar Peterson album for those who don't like much OP

He was definitely a consummate professional, never any doubt or dispute about that. One thing Granz liked was predictability. I think his overall output points to this in a pretty much incontestable manner. Another thing he liked was his notion of quality, which Peterson certainly provided. One thing I've never really figured out, though, was his relationship with Bird. I mean, he put Bird in damn near every conceivable situation, but other than the one Jam Session record and the JATP live shows, he never used Bird as one of his "stable" players. I have to wond4er, was that because of Bird's persoanl habits, was it something musical, did Bird tell him, no, I'll do these other things, but not that, just what was it exactly? On a related note, Granz seemed to, in general, keep his more bop/modern-oriented players apart from his JATP staples. Obvious exception, Stan Getz...it's interesting to look at how Granz moved his pieces around, the moves he didn't make maybe more interesting than the moves his did make. -
Thanks, Joe...this is one of those things where the time and expense risk/reward ratio is very much at play for me...never caught her in her prime, and the recent TV appearances I've seen have been inconclusive, spots, not shows, and not always great spots at that.... Interesting trivia note, though - one of the more recent times she did this gig, a buddy of mine got called for the trumpet chair, and he asked me if I knew this musical director guy, H.P. Barnum? PSHAW, yeah, do your homework, buddy! But I had no idea that H.P. Barnum was still alive, much less active, much less still doing live shows. Survivor.

He's got an appearance scheduled with the Plano Symphony Orchestra coming up...he's 88 now, can't be too much of this left... He used to be omnipresent for these type things around here, the light classics/pops things, and I never bothered, because...um, yeah. But, last of his breed, perhaps? Might be worth going as a "pop culture" moment as anything else? That's the same reason I went to see Sinatra, but Sinatra got the last laugh on that one, he had one of his GREAT nights and I left with goosebumps. Neither looking for nor expecting goosebumps from Doc Severinsen, but if his chops are still good, it might be fun. anybody seen/heard him lately?

Are you experiencing any "problems" with those space saving sleeves not clearly showing the spines of the original tray card? I've seen it go both ways, especially in quantity. Sure like the idea, though...

There's two factors here, really, one aesthetic, one practical. First - feel free to start whatever kind a threads you want, Bev. Targeted listening-to topics might engender more dialogue that the current listening-to threads, which are currently/usually the equivalent of family photos on your desk at work...people walk by, maybe look, and maybe say, "hey, nice kids", and then move on. Then again, nothing wrong with that. But then again, again, nothing really thrilling about it either. From the practical side, I get the slowness around 1 AM here, sometimes earlier, but it's neither better nor worse for a large thread than it is a small one. Given that those are the hours when the board is getting backed up, I don't know that you'd have a different experience or not, I suspect that the data flow to and from your IP's location is more of a factor than is actual thread size. The routing of data is a perversely convoluted one at times, and if you hit even one gateway that is not really flowing, you get a hangup, -

But those were all Norman Granz-produced dates, no? Not sure how much say Getz, Carter, etc., had in picking the sidemen on those recording dates. I remember reading the notes to a Verve Billie Holiday twofer (Strange Fruit) that she truly disliked a session led by Tony Scott; the implication being she had no say in the backup. You can look at both Verve & Pablo and see that Granz had his "stable" It was useful in breeding a brand identity for records, and when the JATP tours went out, hey, same people as on the records. One thing he did on Pablo taht he didn't do on Verve, though, was to use Basie on small group sides. Possibly a logistical consideration, but still, a lost opportunity, I think. Imagine a Billie side with Lester, Ben, Sweets, and Basie. Either way, there are plenty of exceptions, but there's also an obvious correlation between recording for Granz' label and "going to work" for Norman Granz. Nothing bad about that, far from it. It's just that it seems obvious to me who the "boss" was. Remember- Duke left Granz becuase he felt that too much control was being asked. So, it was what it was. -

https://www.dustygroove.com/item/766288 Ok, I'm not $99 worth of intrigued, but having within the last year finished Netflixing the entire series, I must admit that if I had unlimited room (physical and metaphysica0) for unlimited indulgence, this would be a no-brainer. There's some very interesting passages on those shows, cues and sequences alike, and maybe this set includes studio logs or unuion sheets or some other way to identify who certain players were, like the bass player who did that really "modern" (as in post-bebop tone and phrasing) cue that got used any number of times. And the Don Ellis score, hmmm...attention should be paid.

Backed into some 3 Sounds on youTube the other day, and what I really noticed, appreciated, and dug, was Gene Harris's touch, especially his left hand. I mean, that shit is heavy, no doubt, the dude's there to hit, not caress, but - he never gets all pummelly about it. That's what I mean about his clothes fitting him, there's, not so much "hardness" as it is "heaviness", but it never sounds unnaturally pressed into, it's just, that's him. It's not something that makes me feel all casual or anything, but it never feels abusive, or violational or impositional. You know how some people are just big by nature, and some people are really just fat? Gene Harris was just big by nature. this was the cut, btw: If anything was gonna get squashed by being sat on by a fat guy, this would be it. No squashing anywhere that I can tell, no mean feat.

I "know what I'm doing"? No offense, but that's kinda weird... Nobody's trying to kill this thread, and there's been no hostility displayed, just a rather jovial/robust expression of some rather serious dislike - about Oscar Peterson, period. But, jeez, no need to kill the thread, just carry on with the OP love if you're feeling it, it;'s ok, it's not a felony to like Oscar Peterson, nor to dislike him, and the longer the focus is on somebody who doesn't like him, the more the thread becomes about Hey Mister Mean Man, Stop Saying Bad Things About Oscar Peterson, which, really, you want a thread like that, this is how you go about creating one. Otherwise, unless Oscar Peterson was a family member, surrogate father, sperm donor to your delightfully wicked French cousin, or something like that, anything like that, fuck it, you know? All pixels are equal, create your own, grow your own, thread's not getting killed, life remains safe. -
