But the Premature Obituary page (linked to) is lacking in an entry for Mr. Silver. Jazz can use any exposure it can get, especially fact-based!

Wellman Braud was more or less a New Orleanian (moved there in his early teens from just a little north), but still....that's just all kinds of all kinds of wrong. I'd never heard of this Gopnik guy until now, nor do I still pay any attention to The New Yorker, so...proof that I've not been missing out on anything on either count is strongly suggested. I mean, I guess this will be the 21st Century, people just pulling stuff outta their ass and calling it history, and then one person's ass-pull will battle with another's and there will be spectacle galore for fun and profit, and all the young folk will form camps and have positions and such, but jeez, anybody mind if I just go out in the back yard and give an imaginary gutting to all of that with my imaginary Bowie knife and then drink all the imaginary blood that will spurt out, and then imaginary urinate on the carcasses? Or even better yet, instead of imaginary stuff, can I perhaps gather up all this bullshit on my foot, and then not so imaginarily put that foot all the way up the ass of the next anybody I come across who plays this game, and then present them with a card (handwritten, of course) that says, "Returned To Sender! Love, Jim"?

Fixed. Activist jazz fans should see to it that the man and his music are properly represented here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_premature_obituaries

Why do Americans write the month before the day?

Humour is at the centre of my universe, them and misplaced and/or unnecessary vowels. -
Well, ok, here's what I can find free, and it appears that, yes, he is piggybacking on Teachout, and that, yes, he is a twit, or perhaps more to the point, an ignuntass fuck: That second paragraph suggest that he is not just an ingnuntass fuck, but an ignuntass fuck with a gig. People can get hurt when that happens.

Had a chance to play one gig with him. A gig + a rehearsal. The rehearsal was the more interesting of the two, but both were marvelous experiences. He was, based on my one experiences & multitudinous anecdotes, a real "character". And, quiet as it's kept, somewhere in the mid-late 70s, he commissioned a big-band book, and would always book as many horns on his gigs as he could when he could. After the initial "experiment", it wasn't very often the opportunity presented itself, but if that rehearsal was any indication, he, not unlike Sinatra, know everybody's part, how he wanted it played, and how he wanted to sing within the arrangement. Once the show started, he was pure "country gentlemen", but when working with the band alone, he was no bullshit, just a cat who really knew his shit. RIP, sir, and to this day, I'll never forgive myself for coming in a beat early on the intro to "You're Nobody 'Till Somebody Loves You". It was over as soon as it happened, but the bar was set so high that...ooops. No walking back from that one. Just don't accuse me of being without feeling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTWuMdGNprc

I went to work with no socks on one day, left home already late, figured I'd save time. Husteled in, sat down, and got to work right away. One lady stood and stared for a while and finally said, "Jim, I think it's odd that you don't have any socks on." "Nancy." I said (for that was indeed her name), "don't you find it even more odd that, not only do you look at people's ankles to see if they're wearing socks or not, but that you have nothing more productive to do with your time here in this office surrounded by work but to stop said work and issue a verbal commentary about my lack of socks?" Well, everybody else LOL-ed, Nancy got pissed as hell, but everybody went back to work, and even if it only mattered half-a-damn, that work was still exponentially more important than who did or did not have socks on while it was getting done. -
Not Ward Kimball, nor Andy Devine...but FF5+2, yes...however, the engineer pic is from an episode of Dragnet. Plus - he indirectly, because of union rules, won an Oscar for his assistant that he should have won for himself. And yet - neither music nor acting was his primary vocation.

Thanks everybody, much appreciated, for real. Slept late, getting ready for a little meaningless meandering out and about, and then a new Persian place for dinner. So far, so good!

That's Joe Comfort, the man whose bass playing got me to really listening to Sinatra as a serious singer. What he would lay down on the bottom was so strong, I couldn't help but keep going up/through the layers until, hey, there was Sinatra on top of it all. Joe Comfort was a true badass. Look at the size of that bass, and listen to the sound he got out of it. No halfass, no bullshit, just oldschool sound.

Heard from the seller last night....says that he'll ship the item today and send a notice when he does. Fingers crossed.

VIDEO?!?!?!?! Darlene Love - White Christmas
JSngry replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Early 80s, ok, why not, but this is a film, not a video....and obviously Darlene Love doing it for that express purpose, not some YouTube hobbyist's mealange of pre-existing footages (although there are the odd bits of that inserted)...who would have done such a thing, and why? Warner Brothers, from when they had the Spector catalog? Ok, but for what purpose? A Christmas Gift To Who, Exactly? This whole thing, its mere existence, is very confusing to me. There should be an answer at the ready, somewhere. -
