  1. Read the first half of this yesterday (had the time and couldn't stop), hope to finish it by the end of August (hope the time is there). I love it, not because it's a "good book" or whatever, but just because it appears to capture Mingus in full ramblerant, and when that motherfucker rambleranted, it was gold, even when it was batshit crazy bullshit. Same thing with the side/supplemental interviews, especially with Sy Johnson and Bobby Jones, gold even when bullshit. And everybody blames Teo and Teo sees nothing to blame anybody for. Beautiful! I mean, you can tell genius crazy from just crazy crazy, genius crazy always has a purpose and tells the truth, even if the stops along the way are sometimes wrong, in the end, you get to truth, and if you bail when the road stops at bullshit, that's where you're left, you don't get all the way.there, you bailed too soon and the joke's on you (as is the bullshit!) Crazy crazy just lands any damn where, there is no destination, no final point, just a lot of noise to prove to yourself that you're not deaf, which is good to know, but is there a book in that, at least one worth reading years after you're dead?. Mingus was genius. Definitely a book in that.
  2. Basically, what all this news (factual or not, who knows for sure in The Music Business?) seems to be saying is that a lot (most?) people want (or are at least happy with) free background noise just as much or more than anything, as long as it resembles music or talk, they're good to go. So go motherfuckers, go with that. Go as far as that will take you, your free background noise. And then don't call me asking for money to come back home, because all the roads done closed and all the skies done fell and al the rivers done went dry. Oh well, right? Right! Get yourself a college girl and/or learn to play your own instrument and then just move the fuck on as far as making that money goes.
  3. Yes. And there are also some more "exotic" image types that are not allowed (for reason which I do not know). But jpgs, JPEGs, gifs, are all ok. otoh, bitmaps (.bmp) are reasonably common, yet are not allowed, and again, the reason for that I do not know.
  4. Are we talking "melodies" as "songs", or melodies as melodies that may or may not be conducive to "singing" (which is often what is meant by "melody", something "lyrical, something that can or would or maybe even should be sung). The original article seemed to lean towards the former, but some of the most beautiful melodies I've heard have come out of drummers, hand of kit and/or both. Another reason why "most beautiful" not sure what that really means.
  5. A favorite for sentimental pull and melodic arc/climax points, although "most beautiful" what does that mean i dont know what that means and oh yeah, this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfkdV6ZaEuM but there are so many anythat is beauty. "most beautiful" really i don't know about that.

  7. I got to meet and have a nice chat with Gene Bennett at this year's Wheelersburgh, OH HS Reunion (my mother-in-law is Class of 1938), during which time I saw my first real up-close-in-the-flesh World Series ring. Interesting guy not lacking in stories to tell.
  8. bravo, mjzee... one thing tho' is that photo of Redd is anachronistic for the Dootone set... how about this Redd instead? also, don't forget Redd's Dootoon label mate, Scatman Crothers. Tell Cuscuna to send the check to me. (Font I used: Abadi MT Condensed Extra Bold. Can't(?) include the thumbnail in the quote, but, yes, that is perfect. Just f-ing perfect.
  9. Si Robertson - the Jethro Bodine of the 21st Century, and all that comes with that.
  10. Thomas & Tommy were two different people. Will Mr. Gordon be syncopating accordingly?
  11. The first disc of the Vocalion Benny Goodman In Moscow thing loads up as a totally different album altogether, Something called Seven Come Eleven.Disc1. Disc two is correct, which is a drag because Disc 1 is the one with most all the stuff on it that I really listen to a lot. So I can fix it in iTunes for the iPod, but not for my hard copy viewing pleasure.
  12. Are we sure that's not a balloon art?
  13. Ok, we have now had the individual member parsnips lovers roll call. You all are correct, all else are not. Now, may I be so forward as to ask for a survey from said lovers' circle of family and/or friends - is your love shared by many therein?
  14. The Doseys? A couple of dancing squares who made the dough.
  15. Never underestimate Charles McPherson, that's what I've learned.

  21. But I know people who eat turnips. Parsnips, not nearly so much. The befuddlement exudes.
  22. Well, yeah, I do. But you know I can barely read or write, much less type. But let's DO talk about parsnips. They are consistently wonderful!
