  1. The best parties (in terms of getting buzzed, loaded, high, crunk, etcetcetc) are the ones nobody knows about except the ones who were there, so this list, hey yeah ok. And whatever. Good publicity for some halfass bullshit, I reckon.
  2. I always liked how a song like "Someday" could take the (obvious) Stevie Wonder inspiration and go off on its own tangent. Such a talented guy, and such an open mind, and such a (seemingly) happy spirit. For some people "influenced by the marketplace" is a horrible, horrible way to die, but for George Duke, it often seemed to be liberating, like hey, I wasn't really gonna do anything specific with these massive skill sets anyway, so thanks for the suggestions! RIP, and much thanks for the grins, including, especially, the Cannonball music. Couldn't just any old body take Zawinul's place and actually step the momentum up a notch.
  3. Ron Washington today became the winningest manager in Texas Rangers history, which is probably like having the world's largest collection of Edsels or something, but still, he is loved here, and the wish is for many, many more of those wins to accrue. The man whose total he today topped is Bobby Valentine, who is not so loved here. Not so much at all. And then there's Johnny Oates, who is still loved, but still dead too soon.
  4. That's one of the more silliest things I've read recently. "Misunderstood", "reinterpreted", "appropriated (superficially and/or not)", "selectively (and/or but deeply) explored", any of that, yeah, ok, no comment from me one way or the other, but "completely forgotten all about" is just plain stupid.
  5. I ordered directly from John and got the merchandise promptly and cleanly packaged. Both books are up after Mingus Speaks is finished, whenever that ends up being.
  6. Not even the Stereo logo is original, which if irony or some other kind of grin was intended, ok, but, no. If this is the "House Of Jazz", it must be the leaky basement that nobody's gonna bother and clean up because it's just too damn rancid. Just put the house up for sale, get a bigass crate of Febreze, take the money, and Run, Buddy, Run.
  7. HA! I still got that thing. Can't fit into even half of it now, but I still got it. Leaving it to my son in my will.
  8. Good or bad? Very good, imo.
  9. Next big thing? A lot of little things that are "now", not "next", coming more or less together at some point. Critical mass, natural selection, all that. Either that, or there's no room left for "big", which might not be a bad idea, or a very bad idea, or maybe both, depending.Depends on whether the space to put it in opens up or is forced open. Either way, truly "big" is a matter of evolution, not manufacturing.
  10. That makes two of us, I've put off new frames because that shit looks stupid to and on me. But - the bigger, rounder frames are the cool thing now, but they're probably pricier too, since it's what's hip now. But fuck it, I say. If you want to look good, you gotta look right, and how do you put a price on right (unless you're the manufacturer, in which case, you do it quite easily). But from my end, again, fuck it. I got insurance, I got a job, no reason to wear stupid glasses, not for me there's not. So you have those Roy Orbison glasses!?! No, that's too much of a good thing...and frankly, I'm waiting for them to go out of cutting-edge style so I can pick the exactly right time to be stubbornly yet insistently just enough behind the fashion curve to keep it dry and not too expensive. If I drank martinis, I suppose I'd say the same thing. That, and I'm too blind to see the optometrist's phone number to set up an appointment, or to call a taxi. I need an optometrist that makes house calls, that's what I need. I consider it a failure of both personal and community ambition that neither I nor my people do not have one at the ready, not just for me, but for my good friend Dan Gould, and all others in his similar situation and/or predicament. Let us learn from our other Texanian bothers and sisters: http://www.housecalldoctorstexas.com/Referrals-to-Specialists.html Seriously, all windiness aside, I am not a fan of those narrow-ass glasses and do intend to get some of the newer biggerblacker frames as soon as I can muster the gumption to make an appointment..

  12. The one time I went to that famous place down that way (Bubba's?) . I saw Zoot Sims w/Eddie Higgins' house trio. That was enjoyable.
  13. That Five Stars VSOP thing is pretty damn frisky, let me say that.
  14. I'd think they'd have as many as the Rangers. No? Same league, same division, same time zone.
  15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59GYrzT4Los
  16. I'd be much happier if it was against the A's, and yeah, my how things have changed in just a year. But still very much very cool.
  17. Get back to me when I can be retrofitted with a carbon-fiber abdomen. Please!
