I remember when Mathew Shipp said something along the lines of Herbie Hancock should just get out of the way or something like that (don't have the exact quotes handy), but the point was just that Herbie was an old cow eating all the grass in the pasture and the young cows were tired of not having a pasture of their own because of this one fatfuck cow. That I can get, a certain frustration that yeah, Herbie was great in his time, but really still now why? There's answers for that, too, but those are not at all bad questions or an unreasonable motivation for asking them. But this guy is just all shut up you can't play, you're bullshitting, you're making the world an uglier place, just STOP IT, and ummm...well be that as it may be in your mind, just...have the courage of your convictions to live in your own world and all this other stuff that so...rankles you, well ok, it rankles you. Does the name Farhad Safinia mean anything to you? He's the writer/conceptualist behind the show, and...interesting POV, if this is any indicator.

There's some typical "cable drama" bs, might be more that you prefer (or not), but...I never watched Frasier, found it too "cute" for my ongoing tastes, but the whole thing comes down to "is it evil or is it just that if he doesn't do this, who will be the somebody else who does? Because somebody else will, somebody else always does, so...", and that is...not cute. Not cute, and not really answered, so...very real in the end, imo. Plus some great quotes, such as "“what we need is the illusion of change. Change on the outside, continuity on the inside.” and “(People) they want to be led. They want their disputes settled, they want their treaties negotiated, they jobs dispensed, their mutinies punished, and they want their loyalties rewarded. To those who lead them to all they want, they give power. It’s a covenant, unspoken and elemental. When one part fails, it needs to be fixed.” Now that line made me shiver when I heard it, but...evidence to the contrary? It's not a "fun show", I'll put it that way. No idea what Season Two is all about, but Season One...yeah...good stuff, and to be avoided at all costs if one's idealism gets easily offended. Whoever Farhad Safinia is (I'm not a "watching now" type of guy, so maybe I should know?), I'd like to hear more....

I like Natural Illusions better than Linger Lane, and I like Linger Lane. Then again, I like Highway One better than both of them, and nobody talks about Highway One, so...varying mileages and all that, I suppose.

I'd not want to call into question Hoffman's "realness", because obviously it's very real to him what he's doing. Plus, I don't think you it's necessarily "fair" to expect anybody to project (for example) Tina Brook's realness these days, because that specific reality hardly exists anymore, if it does at all. So then you gotta look at it like, "playing the music I love for the reasons I believe in" and as far as that goes, hey, no problem. That's what you should do, right? My problem is, dude, hey, have at least half a clue about where you are relative to where everybody else is and realise that at best you're swimming against a damn high tide with a damn strong undertow, and really...you say "Fuck Wayne Shorter" right now and not expect pushback and a lot of people wondering wtf you're talking about and why and you're not ready with any kind of answer except vulgarity and lack of triadic mastery and all that kind of shit? That's just "not ready", not musically, but "professionally". Again, it's a nice backyard corner garden, and yeah, good for him on that, but... Fuck Wayne Shorter? With whose dick, exactly? I don't watch much of anything, but my wife & I gobsmacked all of Season 1 last Saturday on On Demand. Other than the obvious default "cable drama" flaws (all cable sex looks alike to me, as do all cable "normal people"), I found myself being drawn into the show, and finding my already-in-place ideas about "the nature of power" more than reinforced (which is probably why I liked it...). Anyway, haven't seen Season 2 yet, and understand that there will not be a Season 3. Low ratings, etc. Not sad, so many shows tell a story, then have to keep telling over and over because they keep getting renewed. Hit it and quit it, ok? Hell, I didn't even know that Starz did original programming..not something I would care about, really. But here this one was. Anybody else look at this?

I liked his own stuff, actually, in a "small" "stay within yourself" kind of way. It's kinda like having a nice garden for your own enjoyment in a corner of your back yard. Something you can apply your focus to and get desired results that please your personal esthetic. Good for you, right? But.

FWIW, the whole thing about "order" and "beauty" and "vulgarity" and "exaggerating one's self" in place of "transcending one's self" specifically is terms of jazz is pretty common concept in the world of Lennie Tristano, then and now. I think they're valid considerations, actually, but only when applied to one's own direction. You start projecting stuff like that out to anybody beside yourself/people on the same trip and shit gets...awkward. Also, I didn't see any "illness" in Hoffman nearly as much as I saw somebody who found out in a big hurry that no matter where you are on the internet, somebody is listening and taking notes, so be ready to edit accordingly before, during, and after. I mean, really "Fuck Wayne Shorter" on Facebook? And nobody's going to notice? And/or spread? Seriously? Geez, kid, REALLY? When the whole BAM party went down, Payton was READY for it. I think he knew what was going to happen and had Round Two ready before Round One even hit the street. This kid....doesn't seem to have thought things through to that degree...to put it mildly.

Just watch out what the link is. Sometimes I go from YT video to another, and the address changes prefixes from "www" to "https", the "s" maybe meaning "secure(d)" or something? Don't really know...but the https prefix will not populate the video. However, you can still get to the same video by moving out of/back into youtube until it comes up with a "www" prefix, and then, there you are. I have no idea why any of this works like it does, or how, just how I can make it work for me.

Well, ok, I get it. I was young and intimidated by Giants once myself, probably not fair to crack on him for that. But he was still weak with this Alex Hoffman cat, just as weak in his own was as Hoffman was in his. One thing Wayne Shorter's music "never" was or is was/is weak. Not like that. Clarity of purpose, clarity of voice, refusal to be denied. And otoh, if/when life ever gets to the point where intimidation as a means of screening is totally off the table, then...nah, that ain't ever gonna happen. Everybody wants to be strong, even weak wants to be strong. You get put to the test in life, but you gotta decide whose tests are worth taking and whose are just traps. If I was a bass player, I'd consider Ron Carter's tests to be worth taking. But that Bach thing, that was not a test, that was a trap.

I would be intimidated trying to interview Ron Carter myself, simply because I don't have anything to ask him that he's not already been asked, and I pretty much know all I want to know as a result. If somebody else can get more out of him by asking questions that he's not already given the answer to, then, hey, great. I'll lok at that. But that person ain't gonna be me. No, the one question I would ask him is this - why did you fuck up that Bach album SO bad. But...I don't really care enough to ask, so...moot point.

I thought the interviewer was weak too...neither one of them present a world to which I can relate, nor one to which I want to relate, nor for which I heard any compelling reason to even try to relate. One guys's all "I don't gotta like Wayne Shorter", the other guys all "Well, you gotta RESPECT him, he's a Great Man", then the guys "You can't make me, you're not the boss of me", and jesusfuckingchirst, just...thanks for maximizing the potential of the internet, right? I heard Facebook Anger "arguing" with Accepted Truth. Digital emotions, digital actions, just...no. None for me, thanks. Hey, here's my take on it Fuck BOTH of 'em!

Here's another dare/challenge/suggestion/whatever - go one month without saying anything to anybody about "that". No matter what they say, in your world you don't let it exist in your presence here. One month, that's all. See what happens to those hatchets and to your head. If your real life gets threatened, contact the authorities. If not, then see what happens.
