Found them a little shallow in their time. Pretty much done a complete 175 on them with the passage of time. I didn't really "get" the "need" for music like this then, but now, hell, it seems more than logical now, it seems inevitable. Certainly a little "behind the curve" relative to the most leading curves of their time, but you know....these motherfuckers play their asses off and ain't holding nothing back while so doing. They were where they were, and they carpe-diemed like some big dogs while there. So, yes, a fan of both.

ORIGINAL originals? No idea. WKCR(?) aired the Navy sessions and various incarnations of that have been circulating for a few years now. The Hodges thing might have actually surfaced on an LP, one of those off-off-brand jobs that showed up in a store for, like, five minutes and then disappeared forever until the internet. My copy of it is fairly "immediate" sounding, not bad at all. Haven't really paid that much attention to the Navy stuff other than one or two listens.
