  1. ROTFLMFAO!!!!! Too bad you friend couldn't say, "Monsieur Woods, nous avons besoin d'uriner. Pouvons nous utiliser vos toilettes?" No telling where that would have gone!
  2. Heading into free agency, he's going to become even more problematic? Who does he think he is, Josh Hamilton?
  3. I can see him still being inconsistent in the rotation and some team at the deadline still saying yeah, remember how he came around last year coming out of the pen? Let's go rent Lincecum and put him in the pen! And then you get REAL good value. Relief pitchers are, like, the keno cards of baseball.
  4. I guess they think that nobody actually reads that stuff and are ok with just the correct colors and shapes. Glad you like it, btw!
  5. That guy does indeed sound interesting. Thanks for the tip! NP, something a little different. Used to think that this one was just ever so slightly off, but now I think it just wasn't recorded and/or mixed quite right, the parts are not as integrated into the whole relative to how it sounds like they were while being played. Too bad, because if you can reimagine the mix while listening, it's a very good record. Bartz gets in that zone where he locks into the rhythmic matrix and BAM you're THERE. But that's where the whole isolation-in-recroding thing comes in. Not enough and you got a mess. Too much, and you end up needing some mess.
  6. One. He goes to free agency after this season. Ah, ok. Given how well he came around in the post-season, my hunch is that he stays, and if there's any need/desire to deal him, it will be at the trade deadline next year. I think they could get more for him then. Right now, it's like, Tim Lincecum? Hmmm...Yeah, ok. What else is out there? Whereas in the heat of a pennant race, it's like Tim Lincecum? Yeah, remember how he came around last year? Let's go rent Lincecum! And then you get value back. Of course, if he gets it back together (and he definitely showed that he could) and the Giants are in the race, he ain't going nowhere. But that's just my hunch.
  7. The more I think about it, the more I think that Steely Dan had a big influence on the type of fusion that followed the really nasty stuff, the "smoother" type fusion that was essentially pop groundings played with a jazz esthetic. But I don't think they were the only ones who influenced that type of music. But a lot of people who played on Steely Dan records also played on some of those records, and you know the way that works...people hear you on session A and they say, hey, come in here and do that here on Sessions B, C, and D. Then they say, hey, that thing you've been doing on other people's records, come in here and I'll produce one for you yourself, doing that same thing. And then finally, they themselves decide to produce one for somebody else doing the same thing that they've been doing, and that's right about the time that something else comes around, a new Session A, and the whole thing starts over again, at which point they go from playing stadiums to doing outdoor parks in the summer and that type thing. So if you can think of that type thing as "jazz", then yeah. OTOH, I don't hear much Steely Dan influence in Air or WSQ, so...
  8. Roughly a generation prior to Spike Lee (and an entirely different cultural scene), and most likely meant as a wicked satire of show-business callowness than of racial politics, but coming from a circle of talent (and let that serve as a hint...) whose eyes and ears were often, at the time, every bit as attuned to the absurdities and nuances of their milieu as Lee was to his.
  9. He was the kind of you you just figured was going to live forever...seemed to be blessed like that. I've been up and down and back and forth with his musics, but what always comes through is that this was a good, decent man, not at all fooled or trapped by his success. If only for that,, Brubeck FTW. RIP, and thanks.
  10. Yes to all of that.
  11. Played a Temps/Four Tops show in Albuquerque back ca. 1983. Touring rhythm section, local horns. Union rep (grrrrrrrrrrrr.......) fucked up horribly, quoted a club date rate for an afternoon rehearsal and two sold-out shows the same night. Band shows up, does the rehearsal, then demands to renegotiate for the appropriate rate or no band that night. Cash was handy, no problem, paid in full on the spot. But all the excitement stimulated a need to urinate, and the venue (the Albuquerque Convention Center, iirc) had facilities only in the front lobby (which was a long way off relative to the fullness of my bladder) and the stars' dressing rooms. The Temps were closer, so I knocked on the locked door, which was cracked open to reveal a room full of guys and ladies (FINE ladies, I might add, younger than any of the Temps) looking ready to party like you party when you're in a star's dressing room with 3-4 hours to kill. Started to explain that my need was urgent but brief, didn't even get a full sentence finished before the door was closed with a polite but unmistakably firm "no". Scurried over to the Tops room, knocked, Duke Fakir answered, let me speak, had a look of disgust on his face but said, yeah, ok, just make it quick and get outta here, which I did. The Tops had no party going on, were just hanging out by themselves, like middle-aged guys on a business trip who couldn't wait to get it over and back home, The contrast between their scene and the Temps' was illuminating. Said thank you, have a good show, on the way out and got, at best, a grunt or two. And a glare from Levi Stubbs. I pity poor Bernadette if she walked away like Rene, that's all I can say. Long story short - I once took a leak in the Four Tops dressing room. At Duke Fakir's behest, no less!
  12. I'd think that some ads are triggered by some of the cookies you have on your computer. So if you visited a Bosch site, you probably picked up a Bosch cookie or two. Some also seem to be triggered by thread topic. Peeked in at the NFL thread the other day and there was an ad for airfare to the Super Bowl, or something like that. On the internet, true anonymity and/or invisibility takes more time and effort than most of us are willing to expend, so being a sitting duck for targeted advertising is pretty much one of the new facts of life.
  13. I just imagined a weeklong three-way with Beyonce & J-Lo. My playing field has been more than leveled.
  14. How often did Larry Bunker get recorded playing piano?
  15. Not Sammy, no. The guy was unknown when he di it, and really still is, But the group that he did it for/with represents an early version of a comedy brand name that is now very well known.
  16. Thanks for those further reflections. This definitely sounds like something I want to see. BTW - have you seen No Maps On My Taps? Amazing movie! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_OtQDMyfAI
  17. The dude walked a mile to a gig carrying a bari? Geez, I'd need a drink or two to even contemplate doing that. One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't things. But definitely damned if you lose a horn like that, and irrevocably damned for sending an email like that, especially with that subject line. Is this guy still alive? If so, how? Why?

  19. None of those names are familiar to me, but "weird and wonderful" is always an attention-getter. What's we got here?
  20. Probably not old (at the time), don't know about the other two (although given the time/place of the work's creation, the odds of the guy being Jewish are probably better than him being pale of complexion. But by how much, I can't say). Still, that's a definite 1-3, .333, and that, sir, calls for 4 years with a 2 year renewable option. Tell your agent! BTW - how did the thing work for you in the car? I really did work out the final selection/sequence while driving, wanted it to work as a drive mix as well as an at home one. Then again, my wife gets nervous with how I drive, but she liked the music. Go figure.
  21. Nah, not looking for an argument, just trying to get a better insight into what you meant, that's all. This release is of interest to me, so that's why. What I'd also like your feedback on, now that I have a better idea of your own POV, is do you think that the dancing and/or the musicians are having to compromise what they ordinarily do on their own, or does it seem to you like they fit together fine, each doing what they already do? I could see that one going either way, actually, since only Palmieri and (a young) Haynes have had ongoing experiences playing explicitly functional dance music. But they all swing on their own, and a lot of people feel the swing in ways besides dancing. So, yeah, could go either way, that one. Again, not looking for an argument, just an impression. I value your opinion on this, since you've seen the DVD and know the work of all concerned. Even though I probably have a different opinion than you about the rhythm/music/melody thing (I have a different opinion than a lot of people about that, it seems), I'm also a huge fan of Venn diagrams, if you know what I mean. Recognizing the differences doesn't mean that the overlaps ceases to exist!
  22. Hell, with bionic limbs, throw out each limb after every game. No more injuries, and imagine the market for an autographed Justin Verlander right arm! Or nine of them from a no-hitter! On the only slightly less surreal side: Dale Sveum shot by Robin Yount http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/8712089/dale-sveum-chicago-cubs-manager-shot-robin-yount-milwaukee-brewers-hall-famer-offseason-hunting-accident I was going to make the Dick Cheney joke, but Sveum already did. That's why he's a manager!

  24. That Cover Flow carousel of album covers was something I would play with just for fun. It was like having a jukebox in my lap, which in real life would not be something to enjoy.
