  2. Found a sealed copy on eBay for about the cost of a good lunch. Worth it, if only for this one:
  3. And let us not forget the worthy output of his Nilva label, including John Patton's great Soul Connection album.
  4. Bebop? More like WHEEEEEE-Bop! I love this band like none other. Between this and the Salle Pleyel concert...that's it right there. Don't get no better, ain't gonna get no better. Not for this.
  5. Maybe Timmy should get some of his buzz and put it back on his fastball, if you know what I mean...
  6. No idea how "authentic" this is, or how "good" it's supposed to be by any established critical standards, but I'm pretty much digging the shit out of it! The only time I'm explicitly aware of Buddy Rich's presence is when he plays snare drum, and he does not play all that much snare drum on this record. Which is to say that he creates neither clash nor discord in a setting where it would be really easy to do so. The guy just sits down and plays the music, and let that be a lesson to us all. Besides, in a post-Bollywood world...I don't know what this would have sounded like any kind of listener in a pre-Bollywood world, I'll put it that way.
  7. A serious question - as priced, which format allow you the biggest profit margin, Phil? mp3 or CD?

  9. Video clips available here: http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/heard/mick-jagger-snl-liked-liked-yes-did-163408720.html It's going into the second verse of It's Only Rock & Roll where things start getting bumped up a notch...and everybody seems more than willing to go there. Great stuff.
  10. Jagger played Tyler in one of the skits. Not quite as palpable as the set with Foo Fighters. SNL's been on a bit of an uptick the last few years, actually...still inconsistent, but very funny when it is funny, and that's more frequently than it has been in a while. And Kristen Wiig's leaving...that's too bad. she's become to SNL what Imogene Coca was to Your Show Of Shows. She will be missed.
  11. 19th Nervous Breakdown was pretty good, but when they broke it down into It's Only Rock & Roll, some magic started happening, and shit started getting...palpable. Byt he time it was over...DAMN. Very seldom do I really get moved by rock any more, but this, this one got me, and good. Foo Fighters one hella band, and Mick Jagger can still deliver if/when/etc.
  12. I prefer it to Free For All myself.
  13. The first of a lot of things that would come in rapid succession (although there had probably been a lot of others before, this was the one that consciously "took" as being actual jazz and not something else going on in the background) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=golkh97IWN0
  14. Hope there was cake!
  15. Only available as MP3 files? I like a disc I can play on my nice system, not on my computer. Well, that's not very Avante-Garde of you!

  17. All the bakers in my life tell me that the proportions of ingredients are crucial to a successful outcome due to the chemistry involved, much more so than with meats and vegetables and asphalt and such. Same thing holds true for the mixing and the oven temp and the pan-greasing and all that...even things like altitude and humidity come into play. It's one giant ongoing chemical reaction, baking is. Of course, all cooking is to one extent or another, but there are people who bake well, people who cook well, and not all that many who do both equally well. It's a knack! That's just what they tell me, though. It might be one giant chain-yank, but it seems logical on the surface, the whole "chemistry" thing. I mean, you start throwing around with stuff like baking powder, you got some science class stuff right off the bat!
  18. Yeah, I mean, I'd be hard-pressed to pick who to invite w/o knowing what a good common-ground menu would be. I ain't proud of much, but one thing I am proud of is that if you get invited over specifically to eat, me and LTB will make every effort to give you a damn good, satisfying meal to reward you for your effort.
  19. Umpire Bob Davidson has been suspended for a game by Major League Baseball for "repeated violations of the Office of the Commissioner's standards for situation handling." http://mlb.sbnation.com/2012/5/18/3028748/bob-davidson-suspended-umpire-mlb Glad to see at least a gesture towards public accountability for the umps. Tough gig, I know, but there seems to have been a rise in impudence lately....not a good thing.
  20. I piss on cotton in high honor of the ECM quietude!!!
  21. Yeah, baking is chemistry above all else, pure and simple. Cooking is much less tied to the empirical.
