  1. It went back before the 1970s, I assure you. And almost the same jokes can be transferred over into whatever group is desired to be the butt - blondes, Aggies, hillbillies, you name it. The framework of all the jokes is there for the taking, all you need to do is insert the target of your choice. Of course, I'm sure no such thing exists in the UK, no Irish or Scottish or whatever jokes. Racism? Is Polish a race?
  2. Judging by the heat index these last few days, yes, it is.
  3. He's an icon, to be sure, so even if it's not just me, it's still not enough of other people to make it stop...I just think his whole thing is creepy, and not in a good way. It was ok (enough) when that type of creepy was at least somehow relevant, but that time has come and gone, as I wish his work on these type projects would. That's not gonna happen, though.
  4. The line in question: What is there about this that is in the least bit esoteric and/or arcane?
  5. Do they serve the pizza with a free bag of potato chips like they do down south in the Coal Grove area? That's one of the weirdest things going, right there.
  6. Maybe it's just me, but I'm beyond tired of anything R. Crumb looking. Just....leave it alone and go someplace else, ok?

  10. Stordahl! The recent comment of Sinatra's Point Of No Return, that gets us Strodahl as well, and in a very good place...I never cared for his 1940s work with Sinatra, too ripe, but he seemed to have heard the message of Riddle, pared it down, got rid of all but the crucial notes, gave the sparkle room to sparkle instead of covering it up, and went to a nice place, such as on this Peggy Lee cut. And did you know that he wrote the McHale's Navy theme?
  11. My sympathies to Mrs. Trololo, all the little Trololos, and the global legions of Trololophiles all over the world as they join hands and start a Trololo Train.
  12. Good game today to hopefully end this most dismal and horrifying of ebbs. Win or lose, seeing Rangers Baseball is always a treat. Watching the Rangers just play baseball...sometimes not so much. Today we saw Rangers Baseball, although I wasn't completely sure of it until the game was over. If there's such a thing as Battered Fan Syndrome, we've got it after this past week. Whatever dreams there were of burying the Angels in the standings before they began playing to potential are gone, though. The Angels are awake, quite able, and playing with confidence. Vernon Wells going on the DL & forcing the promotion of Mike Trout was the best thing that could have happened to them (if not to Wells himself). I still think the Rangers have the better overall team, but they will have to not zone out any more if that's going to manifest itself. Especially when it comes to the pitchers getting the third out. This last week was beyond surreal in that regard. When Ogando got Pujols to fly out with the bases loaded in the 7th (all runners getting on after two were out), it was like a curse was being lifted. When the Rangers came through with two more in the top of the9th, it was like the mojo was finally waking up. Of course, it's all really just the Random Factor at work, all of it, but that's just no fun!

  14. The drum tuning sounds like Shelley Manne to me. The chart like Nelson Riddle. No complaints! Any idea from what show this was taken from?

    RIP Alvin Alcorn

And they both died in July of 2003? Coincidence?

  18. I hear ya' on the fun part. I've started working from home over the last year or so, and now have time to play music all day. I find myself more and more going to the LP sleeves, just because it's fun. I've got a relatively shit system (more than relatively, most likely), and a lot of my LPs are less than pristine. But it's ok, it's is the music as I grew up with it, and as much as I like hearing an ultra-cleaned up CD with full frequency response, etc, sometimes I just as much like hearing a funky LP mastering with surface noise and other weirdness. Both are enjoyable in their own way, although for entirely personal/subjective reasons. I'm also finding that in today's hipster-driven marketplace, you can find older LPs in pretty good shape selling for a really nice price just because the cover's been written on or stickerized or gotten a cutout hole/cut corner some such. Like I can listen to the cover... $4.95 for a great LP just because Daddy Boo or somebody liked to write on the cover? Hell. I'll do that deal any day of the week! Tell you what, though - if you ever get tempted to play vintage 45s on your system - don't do it. I mean - do not do it. Those things were mastered for maximum visceral punch, and believe me, they still pack it. You'll be rurnt for good!
  19. Mosaic should do comedy Boxes as well as what they already do. Just from the Universal archives alone, you could do Second City, Nichols& May, Johnathan Winters, Shellie Berman, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl, Buddy Hackett, who knows who else.

  22. Quiet as it's kept, McDermott is also the alto player on "Charlie Parker"'s ill-fated Lover Man date. Seems that Bird actually had his breakdown the day before that session. But Ross Russell already had everything booked and paid for, McDermott was in town (when was he ever not?), so raw necessity did what it does best - make a lot of weird shit happen that nobody wants to fully fess up to. Unfortunately, the years had not been kind to McDermott's relation to the bottle, and for decades nobody had any problems believing the ruse. Not, that is, until Lou Donaldson spilled the beans in a phone call to a certain NYC sports talk radio program.
