  1. Y'all need to work on your time. That shit's all over the place. A not uncommon issue at age 16, I hasten to add, lest you think I'm just being an asshole. I'm just saying, in order to swing, there must be an acceptance of where the pulse (which is not the same as "the beat") is, not a quest to find it. That's a function of both confidence and awareness, so be aware, be humble, but know it when you get it. It's a lot like making love. Hell, it is like making love. The more you know, the more you grow. The more you live, the more you grow. The more you grow, the more confident you get, and the more confident you get, the more fun you can have doing instead of trying to do. So hang in there, don't half-ass, and maybe play some tunes that, uh....make you wanna cop a feel instead of gaze admiringly.

  5. I really like this image.

  7. If you burnt it as MP3s to a DVD, would it all fit on one disc?
  8. 'Twas indeed a pleasure to be able to meet, greet, and beat the heat with the Young Mister Armstrong, who surprised the holy shit out of me by biking up to DFW in this godawful miserable heat (glad to hear there was relief on the way back!). Glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself, Lon, because as I told you there, I know you're not one to put up with just any old triflin'-ass bullshit! I didn't realize it had been that long since we last hooked up...seemed like the conversation took off like it had just ended a few hours ago...gotta love it when that happens, for real. Memo to motorcyclists in search of a kick (start) - y'all come on up/down/over to the next gig!
  9. Last time I badmouthed this record, an Oliver Nelson fan came forward and declared that this album has been "unfairly marginalized". I can only pray that that Oliver Nelson fan was not me Ambien tripping or something. God knows I love Oliver Nelson, and his very best work is indeed exquisite, but this album is as close to a "hack job" as somebody of his skills could muster. It reeks of rushed deadlines, overcrowded schedules, anything and everything except somebody dedicating themselves to the real task at hand. But as unfavored as this one, perhaps even a tad more so is: I mean, the Nelson album just bugs me. this one makes me mad & then puts me to sleep.
  10. I have Milan & Paris as this 2-LP ABC-Riverside I like it becuase you can play one side and then walk away for a while. That's just about right for these sets. Good, solid, occasionally delightful, but...one side at a time is just about right.
  11. Truth be told, self-criticism (aka humility about one's self at some level) is essential for any sustained high achievement in any field. It's also a quality that has sorely and consistently been pushed out out the general consciousness for the last...half-century, if not more?

  14. Ok, this is rich... I found a David Foster Wallace commencement speech online here: http://web.archive.org/web/20080213082423/http://www.marginalia.org/dfw_kenyon_commencement.html And pasted these three sequential paragraphs into the "tool": So who is this writing like? So fuck this bullshit!

  18. This one setnece of spontaneous blather: Mine eyes have heard the gory of the dumbing of the chord - his ruthlessness is smashing on and on and on. Means I write like Margaret Mitchell!!!!
  19. Not exactly....I was blog-cruising & this one "lounge legends" blog that I always check out just for the oft-bizarre album covers had this video embedded, so I watched it. It's every bit as freaky-surreal as that one with the Russian guy singing the syllables, I think. Nothing about it is real, and yet....there it is anyway! The mix of awe, terror, laughter, and befuddlement this video stirs in me is indescribable.

  21. So many parallel universes peacefully coexisting here, none of the even remotely relevant to or even approximately similar to mine (or maybe yours either?).... the mind reels at the ability of the universe to host all this.....this at once...
